Depends on your home, property, and lifestyle, though. A small yappy dog can be a good alarm to give you enough of a heads-up to pull the Mosin bolt from your anus and chamber a round.

Primarily a dindo dog. More or less a projection of power like open carrying. While they can be good and loving they can also lose it in a blind rage and attack anyone. Best dog for this situation is one that alerts you to the problem. Most dogs can be dealt with or at least kept at bay with a shovel, but the owner with a shotgun is a much deadlier option.

Presa canario would probably be the best guard dog. Loyal and human aggressive and defensive, plus they're normally around 80-120 pounds.
But think of a dog as nothing more then an alarm system, and a way to buy you some time with a serious threat. Sure, they'll ward off half way crooks and maybe druggies from attempting to B&E, but someone who is determined, can easily enter a home, kill the dog, and get to their target. Subduing a dog is alot easier then you'd think.

I have a 100 pound German Shepherd, and I shudder at the thought of my dog attacking an intruder. If my dog is engaged with an intruder, I couldn't take a shot as easily, and there's a 99% chance my dog will be injured by the intruder anyway. I'd rather he just bark and be intimidating rather than actually attack.
