The us uses the Mossberg m90a1 and others I think

More for ship board defense, mp duty, crowd control amnd door breaching than anything I think but its still used

They're mostly used for breaching and less lethal crowd control.

But sometimes they're used for direct combat. The Marines liked using them in Iraq, and there are a lot of good reports of how effective 12 gauge is in room to room fighting.
>>
I'm pretty sure people in the naval get certified on the Mossberg 500 and the M9.

Submariner here. Can confirm qualified on armory Remingtons and had Mossbergs on board the boat. The shotguns are so similiar if you qualify on one it's good for the other. A pump shotgun is a pump shotgun.
>>
Canada uses off the shelf 870s.
>>
>>30313230
What's a shotgun on a submarine for? Putting down mutinies?

Is Mutiny still a problem for modern navies?
>>
>>30313230
Also a submariner, the only weapon on a submarine that there is more of than 870s/500s is M9s.

Former US Army Combat Engineer here, I carried a Mossberg 500 in Ramadi Iraq, mostly for breaching but I shot at hadji with it when I had the chance.
MP's and some NG units are trained on shotguns for crowd control use as well.

Topside sentry stands watch with one (or an m4 depending on the ship).

Early MARPAT had a problem of melting and sticking to burned skin in the vehicle fires that happened after IED detonations.

While the Marines were stocking up on enough flame resistant MARPAT for everyone they issued tan/khaki flame-resistant pilot's jumpsuits as a stopgap substitute.
>>
>>30313457
Wow thanks a lot. How do these things keep getting through? Navy is still rolling out flame resistant coveralls because our NWUs melt to flesh when exposed to flame lol.
>>
>>30313351
Hmm, I have no experience fighting bears, but I did some googling and found this:

http://www.fs.fed.us/pnw/pubs/gtr152.pdf

It says with 00 buck, you'd be fucked against a polar bear.

00 buck probably wouldn't be lethal until it was only 5 yards away. They don't even bother to rate 5.56. They say anything under .30-06 is worthless, with .30-06 representing the bare minimum of what you need.

And they're talking mostly about brown bears. Polar bears are even meaner... What could the Navy use against polar bears?

50BMG? Is there something a bit more reasonable?

2 top side rovers with M4s would drop a polar bear. Idc how strong a bear is, 30 556 rounds will drop it. Watch the video of the moose getting dropped by 3 rounds from a glock. (9mm I believe).

These caliber things are more so when it comes down to single shot humane kills.
>>
>>30313651
Also bears aren't exactly going to hurt the boat, it's kind of made of metal and you can almost certainly scare them off with the LRAD.
>>
>>30312210
Bullshit at ft Henning the clearance procedures posted at all buildings list the procedure for Mossberg 500s
>>
>>30313683
Yeah, I do think automatic fire is probably the trick to bears.

I bet even automatic 5.56 would take down a bear no problem. I wonder if any Alaskans use automatics as their personal bear gun.
>>
>>30313716
I believe they we're talking about subs, which due to coating you'd not like to have a bear clawing ariund.

Small moose but still, mag dumping will kill anything. It's a fact of life, unless you just don't aim and miss or only hit one leg.
>>
>>30313736
A bear isn't going to damage SHT tiles just by walking around on them, or even clawing at them, they're on there pretty good.
>>
>>30313736
Subs are designed to slam through six feet of hard arctic ice, I doubt a bear can scratch the paint worse than surfacing through an ice pack.

Slugs, like anyone that carries a shotgun for bear defense uses. Saboted, Savaustre, hexolite, or any DGS Slug.

Not the first case of this. I'm not underestimating or down playing the ferocity that bears can posses, but proper ammo and good shooting is better than a .44 that you can't shoot for shit. Bears do have thick skulls, but keep in mind that the old bullets bouncing off of bear skulls thing is rooted in soft lead musket/miniballs.

9mm isn't ideal, but better than nothing

No, he's saying they aren't flight suits either. They're Combat Vehicle-crewman Coveralls or CVC's. Used by tankers and trackers because they're flame retardant and a lot more comfortable in a hot ass track than marpat cammies.

Polar bears are over 10 feet tall. They can probably pull themselves up 12 feet if they reach for it.

Once that bear is in the sub, it would be a bloodbath. A submarine is basically just tinned meat to a polar bear.
>>
>>30313908
this
I'm tired of numbnuts talking about 1 shot kills like they're sniping the bears
>>
>>30313966
If the bear sneaks up on you, which is exactly what they've evolved to do, and you only realize it's there when it's charging the last few meters, I want something that can take it down in as few rounds as possible.

Polar bears actively stalk and hunt people. We're prey to them.
>>
>>30314002

The bear would have to climb up the sheer metal surface that rounds off at the top to where the dudes are. You'll note how there's a dude with a machine gun as well as a lookout sitting on the back of the sail chilling.

There is not a fixed external ladder.

Although you know I have seen technical drawings of a rope ladder system for fairwater planes boats that goes up onto the plains from topside then to the top of the sail. I've never actually seen the thing or heard of it being used despite of being on a fairwater planes boat though sea trials and deployment.
>>
>>30314027
Very few animals learn what a firearm is and how fucked they are if we have one.

I have seen crop raiding birds only fuck off once they see a gun come out. Wilds dogs get way to close to comfort unlesd you have a gun and they realise it.

Apex predators like bears, crocodiles, lions etc dont ever learn what these things are though and they treat you as prey.

I recently got out of the military and we used the 870 with 00 buck when I was a maintainer for nuclear weapons. We had a few loaded shotguns in the maintenance bay whenever we were working on a nuke. We also had to have one of us post security in full gear with an 870 whenever the outside bay doors were open.

As for the gun itself, it was basically the 870 MCS with the pistol grips and rails (but we never used the rails). I heard that before my old unit got the 870, they were issued Mossbergs with wood furniture, but because wood couldn't hold up to the abuse of being thrown around between gun safe and the gun racks on site, they adopted the polymer 870. What's funny is that we were only required to load 4 rounds in the magazine tube even though it could hold more.
