the American Army ditched the regimental system some time after WWII I guess. You may be in a unit like say 3rd BN 7th Inf Reg, but there is no regimental HQ for the 7th Inf regiment. It's a traditional thing. I left the Army in 2006 when the Army was remodeling itself under the Unit of Action plane, which were just leaner brigades. Before that a light Inf Brigade would be made up of three Inf Bns, and assorted support units (Arty, Eng, etc). A Mechanized Brigade in the Army back then was made up of two Mech Infantry Bns and one Armor BN, or two Armor Bns and on Mech Inf Bn.
