Hardening with a badly insufficient temper, very high carbon content, and a high phosphorus content (especially in cold weather) are all historically somewhat plausible things that can turn steel quite brittle.
Such would most likely be a rarity in whatever period this is supposed to be. High carbon steel wasn't cheap, and in general people often preferred to err on the side of bending, since you can stomp such a blade back into service, unlike one that snapped off.

Well it takes ~1 minute for your blood to make a full circuit. The xeno's about 3 times bigger, so we'll say 3 minutes for a full circuit. So at MOST you have 3 minutes before blood with messed up pH reaches the brain or heart. And in those 3 minutes, it'd suffer horrible cramping and burning all along the path the injection took. Humans can only survive changes in blood pH of around .2 from normal, so it doesn't take all that much to cause death. 3 minutes is a long-ass time to fight the xeno, but in combination with other wounds it might not be so bad. It certainly couldn't hurt to coat whatever melee weapon you choose in baking soda or some other base.

A big steel pole, as the end melts off it stays fairly deadly, and has reach. Only problem is it would take quite a bit of strength to use effectively.

Since they stick in it minimizes the acid released for a while, while also making it very painful for a xenomorphs to keep going. With every movement depending on the strike location the shards may be driven deeper.

Even though weapons can stand probably a fight to death (with this bugs, let's give it 5 min) they must last longer, 'cause if you win, you'll need it and you just can't go trough life making awesom and expensive weapons to fight.
