I want to start a funs collection, but the only firearms I'm interested in are ones that have historical significance. Like army surplus and whatnot. What's a good classic rifle or handgun that's relatively cheap with relatively common ammo?
Pic related. Something I'd like to own.

You missed dirt cheap milsurp by about 5 years, friend. Cheapest is still mosin for a couple hundred and ~40CPR ammo but at this point you may as well buy a Mauser for $300 and 50CPR ammo.

Fuck my life
>>
$300-$600 is what I can consider relatively cheap.
>>
>>30295008
With milsurp rifles it's usually not the rifles that get you, it's the ammo. A few hundred rounds and you could easily have put more into ammo than the rifle itself
>>
>>30295018
Yeah that's what I hear about mostly. You can have a great cheap rifle but it's like 100$ for a handful of rounds.
>>
>K31
>historical significance
>>
>>30295037
Well more like antique rifles actually. I don't want the exact Flint lock pistol that killed Abe Lincoln I just want cool raifus from the 20s-40's
>>
>>30295048
get a yugo or turkish mauser, you can still get them for $200 or less

some are worth that if they have the right parts and stamps. probably old farts who want to omuch for their shit though. check classifieds on forums or gunbroker. order online and get sent to your FFL, or just wait until CMP starts processing orders again, which could be who knows how long...

you want rifles over pistols though? any particular conflicts or battles or nations you like more?
>>
>>30295037
The Schmidt-Rubin line of rifles (yes I know the K31 was designed by Adolf Furrer) was the first straight-pull rifle issued en masse to an army

M1 Garand. Pop for a CMP .308 model for relatively cheap ammo.
>>
>>30295190
what are you talking about, almost every mosin has seen action in ww2. finn captures have probably seen 2 wars

same with russia captured k98s

there are plenty of good choices

Makarov is your best bet. 9x18 mm has similar performance to 380 and isn't too hard to get. Anything else isn't cheap or common

Here's a few of the more common ones but you have completely missed the days of cheap milsurp. The mosin was the last cheap rifle and that was 2 years ago. That being said you can still buy milsurp but it's going to cost you as much if not more than modern firearms.

>SKS $350 to 600
>Mosin $300 to $400
>Yugo Mauser $350
>tokarev $250
>p64 or makarov $250

Thats pretty much it for anything remotely cheap. Other milsurp rifles are above 500 and some like the garand and 1903 are now 800 to 1000.

I started my collection the same way you did and at first I loved all the history but after a while you will get tired of the special snowflake ammo, the constant worrying about the condition of the gun, and often times mediocre performance, especially with mosins and SKS rifles. Some shoot a couple inch group at 100 yards, others shoot a pie plate. There's just no way to know unless you buy them so basically you're gambling a few hundred dollars then screwing over the next guy when you inevitably sell the mediocre rifle. They are fun but have some modern guns too. You won't regret it.

Poor bastard, i paid 75 plus tax at a gun show.

Granted she was a little beat. bores' in good shape though. but a few scrubs with simple green a quick restain and some brasso on the handguard end caps and she came out looking pretty good.

OP, listen to every single thing this guy said (>>30295955). He speaks nothing but the truth.
>>
>>30295129
What is that and how much is it worth? I saw what I believe to be something like that at a lgs recently and passed it up because I had no knowledge of it.
>>
>>30296221
Enfield jungle carbine.

Last i checked they went for 4-500ish
>>
>>30295955

Another thing I should have mentioned is pay attention to the caliber of your milsurp rifle. The ONLY common and affordable foriegn calibers are Russian, meaning 7.62x54r, 7.62x39, 9x18, and 7.62x25. The pistol calibers and x39 can be bought at 30 cents per round or less and the x54r can be bought for 50 cents per round. These ammo types can be bought in bulk at almost any online ammo retailer. The rifle calibers are even available at walmart. They are also new production so you don't have to worry as much about rusting, like you would with corrosive surplus.

That being said, other calibers like 8mm Mauser, 7.5 Swiss and French, and 303 British are usually 75 cents per round minimum and are not widely available. It's fine if you are a true collector with lots of money but since you are starting out for the first time please buy something affordable and readily available. Otherwise you won't be shooting very often because ammo is too expensive or you can't find it for sale.
>>
If you want to start a legit milsurp collection you should probably buy up as much shit as you can as soon as possible, because it's starting to dry up.
>>

Just to be clear, an antique firearm is one made before 1899 or a reproduction of a muzzle loading black powder firearm. This is important because the ATF doesn't regulate antique firearms.
