Eastern gear just is subjectively appealing and with a surge in Russian gear companies recently it's pretty cool to see "east meets west" gear like Russian plate carriers, Western camo gorkas, and combat pants with Russian patterns.
That being said most of my equipment is American, however I do prefer AKs over ARs.

I don't think it is the greatest country in the world, just find it culturally fascinating and, from talking with Russians, seem to identify more with the Russian psyche than with the American psyche.
I discussed it with someone online once before, and he speculated that it is similar to why weeaboos exist: we are social rejects in our own society, so we cannot identify with it, so we latch onto a caricature of another society.
One reason is because Russians have managed to gain their own version of the stereotypical "cowboy" ultra-machismo persona, and lots of people find it cool and want to emulate it.
