SKS, is lighter and mostly does the same thing within 400 yards and ammo is a lot less expensive.
If you want a full size semi auto, there's a lot of objectively better choices than a garand.
SKS is noticeably more practical.

do you like history? do you already have a garand? it's not any better in a tactical sense, obviously with a garand you are owning it for the historical/collectability factor

Garand is indeed a nicer rifle. It's worth the extra $300 or $400. Great piece of history, shoots well, lots of after market parts, fun to shoot at Garand/CMP contests, nice construction and just cool. But .30-06 is expensive for poor fags like me (college student). 7.62x39 is cheap if you buy the steel-cased Wolf shit or if you buy Yugo/Russkie surplus, the SKS will gobble it too. Plus, I prefer the rugged design of the SKS. So yeah, I'm just too Jewish to buy a Garand.

less garands were made than sks's, so they are definitely more collectible. if you are looking for purely a shooter for the range, the sks is probably the best option economically speaking. but personally i think the garand is a better rifle, since it can be used at longer ranges and has better sights which are easily adjusted for both windage and elevation at the click of a knob
SKS as a shooter due to cheaper ammo and being more pleasant to shoot

I think it would have been replaced by the AK too soon to have done too much commie killing.
I need to take a new pic because I've added a new one to the family. I prefer my M1 Garand in almost every possible way. The SKS is pretty handy and compact though. I usually take my Mini-14 when I need a small semi-auto carbine for playing with in the woods.

one is american, chambered in 30-06 and normally hold 8 rounds. makes ping noise and is usually fairly expensive.
the other comes in slav or chink flavor. is in 7.62x39 and normally holds 10 (or if you bubba'd it) 20-30 normally. also substantially cheaper.

Believe it or not, I didn't learn everything I know from games that push the "ping" hard, and don't allow you to top off just so you can hear it more. I know some people who have the hugest boner for garands, but I just don't see the appeal. They've tried to show me it's greatness, and it just doesn't excite me much.
Speaking of games, it drove me nuts back in my cod:uo days since I haven't played many ww2 themed things since. I had to waste so much ammunition if I ever got stuck using that gun, kar98k/mosin masterace anyway so usually didn't bother me. And I didn't care for red orchestra much past the germany vs russia maps so I basically quit after the jap pack was added. I don't even remember if they'd let you top off in that or forced you to ping.

I'd like an SKS as a semi-auto and a 1903 Springfield as a bolt-action; I figure for semi-auto range the 7.62x39 should be enough and 30-06 is better used as a designated longer range weapon- i.e. in a sniper role. I just don't see the point in semi-auto 30-06 unless it's the 40's and OpFor only has bolt-action full-size cartridge rifles; there's a practical limit to how far you can effectively use iron sights.
