AV8B is a ground attack jet not a "fighter jet"
it would be like posting an A-10
>>30247583
They fight and they have jet engines, so they're fighter jets

What about the F-117
the F designates it as a "fighter". It was 100% ground attack. Although I have heard people say it might have been designated F-117 in order to confuse spies. They would be unsure of its real capabilities.

+1
>>30251424
I've heard several different theories about that, actually.
Confusing spies was definitely part of it. There are also theories that the "F" was put in just to make it seem "cooler" and get more pilots to volunteer for it. I believe the number "117" was actually a reference to the "Century Series" of fighters that came before, with the F-117 taking the place as the last Century fighter.
>>30251424
Yes, the 'F' was disinfo for sure.
>>30251424
The F-111 was strictly a attack jet too, but it had the F designation. Though for what it's worth, it was intended to be a fighter, too, but the B prototype failed and instead the Navy got the F-14.
>>30251752
The F-111 had an F because it was made before the 1962 United States Tri-Service aircraft designation system.
>>30251837
So wouldn't the Navy version get a name like fighters did in WWII?
Something like F111FD-2.
>F for fighter
>111 for model
>F again for Grumman
>D for Douglas
>last number for version
because that would be bad ass. Plus it would look really cool in Wildcat or Hellcat blue
>>30251752
>>30252231
>McDonnel Douglas
I meant General Dynamic (which I don't think had a Navy designation in WWII)
>>30251752
>>30251837
>>30252231
>>30252245
It was designated "F" because one of the variants was supposed to be a fighter. Plus, the strike variant had some nominal fighter capabilities (it was supposed to be able to carry a cannon and AIM-9s in some configurations)
It actually came about after the tri-service designation system, but McNamara decided to use the last designator from the old system (111) rather than start on the new one with this new jet.

Has there ever been a real point to a fighter jet outside of Korea?
>>30253154
>Wings don't bend at all
Aliums.
>>30251424
From what I heared, it was going to be called either the a-117 or the b-117, but the us wanted fighter pilots to be flying it, so they named it the f-117 to encourage fighter pilots to apply for it.

Hey /k/, I was at an air show today and there's something in the pics we took.
Drone maybe? What do you think?

you get all three
Gee why so much F-14 spam. Buttmad?
Tomcat is a Cadillac CTS with Navigation and bluetooth and onstar. All that shit. In the shop all the time, fucking tranmission feels like pudding, the engine light is ALWAYS on.
Phantom is a '71 Eldorado. Classy as fuck, carries more than modern pickuptrucks, 500 cubic inches and a fucking supercharger. Never breaks until you run it off a cliff or get hit with a missile.

You gotta love big girls though.
>>30255591
How long until they paint anime chicks on it?
>>30255615
They don't paint anime chicks on fighters. Plus, the paint would fuck with the stealth, i think.
>>30255860
Hot.
>>30255884
They do on occasion, although it's rare versus how many other things they put animay chicks on. Specifically I recall some F-4s with some anime chick on them, but I can't find a picture at the moment.
