Been looking for a high end at recently, can decide whether to get it in 5.56 or 223. Heard horror stores about barrels busting when not using proper ammo so I want to make an informed decision
>>
Ar*

I'm on a phone
>>
Neither.

Go .223 Wylde.
>>
>>30242259

doesnt matter, they are the same round, you can shoot both out of the same barrel
>>
Just get a 223 wylde chambering...
>>
>>30242259
Most .223 rifles made today are actually 5.56mm NATO rated, 5.56mm rifles can handle .223 perfectly.

Guns which are only rated for .223 will usually have such stated on the gun or in the manual, if you're unsure, search online to see.

For example, a Mini-14 can shoot 5.56mm NATO and is marked as such, but a Mini-14 Target is only meant for .223 and it will say so on the gun

Not always true.

Good answers I guess.

223 wylde?
>>
>>30242259
.223 Wylde is chambered to allow safe operation of both .223 & 5.56 case dimensions.
Most commercial .223 rifles built today have a .223 Wylde chamber even tho they may say .223 rem, the exception being competition/match guns.

Thanks, any suggestions for an Ar though? Looking at hk, f1, and armalite right now. No real price point, just something decent for the range that outperforms my dads old colt.

Old Colt rifles, if in good shape, are actually pretty good performers.
Newer Colts aren't quite as good as the old ones (though this doesn't reflect in their pricetags).

What kind of old Colt is it, Sporter HBAR, an old SP-1 even?
>>
>>30242411
It's an sp1, dad used it for years though. Pretty beat up.
>>
>>30242259
long story short:

.223 chambers don't really like 5.56 pressure.

5.56 chambers can take all loads, but too slutty to utilize match .223 due to cavernous vagina.

.223 Wylde chamber is a tad tighter chamber to be in between both.

I'd hold on to that SP-1 (regardless of if you get a new gun or not), they have a bit of a value to them, in various ways.

See if you can get a new barrel, replace springs and the buffer, maybe ask if a gunsmith is willing to do it for you, if you're inexperienced.

Do you have a picture of it? How badly worn is it?

5,56 = .223 +P

Just use a stronger spring

Have fun shooting!!

In an SUV for a camping trip, I got a new phone so don't have any pics. I plan on keeping the sp1 for fending off coyotes on the ranch. The gun has a lot of chips in the lower and upper reciever, plus a lot of gunpowder residue in the bolt.
>>
>>30242350
Unless you're real anal about rollmarks or upper-lower play (the jiggl'in between the two), any in-spec lower will suffice.
A lot of advice usually goes into putting money into the barrel, BCG, and trigger. Everything else is really up to how you feel when shooting the gun.
>>
>>30242321
Hybrid chamber that will support both commercial 223 and 556 nato rounds.
>>
Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll look into getting the sp1 fixed up and finding good 223 Wilde parts.

Residue inside the bolt-carrier is normal, that's where the gas goes (if you want to get it out, let it soak in a heavy spurt of CLP for an hour or so, then scrub it out with a brass brush), but chips, like, gouges and shit out of the receiver? I guess he might have dropped it off a cliff or something.

If money isn't an object, then a current Colt isn't actually a bad rifle, they're a couple hundred dollars more than they're really worth, but there's nothing wrong with them.
If you want something cheaper, but still good, Smith & Wesson has the M&P-15

It was involved in an atv accident at the ranch. It's real beat up, but it still works.

If it rattles around in the butt hurt hole, it's not big enough. You won't be satisfied until you get an auto loading howitzer shooting needle dicks.

Great round if you want to shoot through a mountain and hit something on the other side a hundred miles away with no travel time.

Owned several ARs and pretty much everything out there will allow .223 or 5.56. I've put both through mine and it's totally fine. I usually just get 5.56 FMJ (green tip) I started off cheap when buying one. Got a smith and Wesson m&p 15 sport (no forward assist or bolt cover) it was on sale for like $450-500. Out of the box it was a decent rifle but now I've turned it into a $2k+ SBR. Obviously got a new upper and barrel with those features. Instead of buying something from the store already priced at like $1k or 1200 just get something cheap and basic and upgrade it the way you want it over time. Picture related

As you can tell I'm still using the original lower receiver. I did install a new CMC 2 stage trigger about half a year ago now. The lower works completely fine still, I'll upgrade it one of these days. Hoped this helped you a bit anon. Happy shooting
