Best tank destroyer reporting in. Snikt, bub, and I love cheeseburgers and baseball. Now how about them Mets?

Playing it in WoT right now. It's not a bad tank, but it's awkward as fuck to use.

>>
can someone explain what a "tank hunter" is? what distinguishes it from just a tank? I mean I see treads, i see armor, and I see a large-caliber main gun.
>>
>>30231875
no
>>
>>30231875
Almost all post so far are of American tank hunters. These are essesntialy lightly armoured, fast tanks built solely to take out enemy tanks while the rsal US tanks (shermans) took out everything else
>>
>>30231875
Primarily it's a vehicle made to destroy tanks, generally mounting an overly large gun in a fixed casemate

>But so many of these have turrets!
Murika doesn't have to play by your rules. We put turrets on our tank destroyers because freedom.

"Tank Hunter" refers to a tank destroyer, usually a German Panzerjager since that is what it's literal translation is.
It also refers to tank destroyer. M10, M36, M18, Jagdpanzer IV, Jagdpanther, Jagdtiger, Ferdinand/Elefant are all tank destroyers/tank hunters
German ones are usually defined by a casemate mounting a large gun (no turret), while US and British are usually identified by a lightly armored, but heavily armed tank looking vehicle.
The reason why Germans preferred turret less tank destroyers is because they were easier to produce and cheaper. US more or less employed what is classified as a tank now days, but in a tank hunter role. For the United States it came down to doctrine rather than design. By vague definition of a "tank" US tank destroyers were for all intents and purposes tanks.
>>
>>30231875
What you don't see is that the armor is actually thin, and the open topped turret. You wouldn't use them for tank duties unless you were desperate,
>>
>>30231862
>Noville
God that is sexy....top speed 55 mph and a gun big enough to take out der tigers.
>>
What the difference between a tank and a tank destroyer? They're both tanks. Is it a tank whos sole purpose is to kill tanks?
>>
New question: What's the difference between a Panzerjäger and a Jagdpanzer? (A hunting tank vs a tank hunter.)

I'm not talking about doctrine or philosophy of use between the two, but what were the design differences?
>>
>>30232057
>tank
Support infantry formations, make and exploit breakthroughs in enemy lines, destroy fortifications or entrenched positions, destroy enemy tanks
>tank destroyer
engage and destroy enemy tanks, usually deployed as a reactionary force (US WWII doctrine) or dedicated frontline tank killer (German doctrine)

>>
>>30232057
Depending on who's doctrine you're following, tanks may historically be divided into Calvary tanks to fight other tanks, and infantry support tanks which provide cover and support for the troops. The British had both in WWII, the big difference being their movement speed: infantry tanks are slow.
>>
>>30232066
To my understanding, Panzerjager and Jagdpanzers were fairly similar in desgin. Both had casemates mounting large calibre guns and were meant to engage enemy tanks from ambush positions.
I could be wrong on the minute details but to my understanding, that is the gist of it.

A caveat to my other post. I did a quick google search, and came up with this.

I know its WoT, but their conversation seems to be pretty spot on.

After encountering the T-34s on the eastern front, the Germans wanted to upgun the StuG.
StuGs were originally infantry support assault guns, with short barreled 75mm howitzers, but after being upgunned with a longer barrel L/43 and later L/48 75mm Sturmkannone, they were often pressed into ad hoc tank destroyers, and sometimes to great effect.
>>
Knocked out Elefant.
>>
>>30232239
should've just made fuckloads of these With Panzer IV H's to match, up-gun as necessary
>>
>>30232274
They really should have.
I think that every nation should have had a heavy breakthrough tank though, and that is where the Tiger I came in.
Sad part about the Panzer IV though, is that it reached its upgrade plateau fairly quickly.
>>
>>30232274
They did do that. For a German value of fuckloads.
>>
>>30232279
>>30232274
But they did. In 1944 the Germans had made enough equipment to fully supply 220+ divisions while only having 180 divisions. However by very late 1944 and into '45 the German industry finally broke due to the lost of land from the Soviets and Allied bombing. Pretty much the meme of Germany not having enough equipment is false.

panzerjager were earlier design where the casemate was opened top.
jagdpanzer were later designed to have close top for better protection.
