The Macuahuitl was a top-notch club and cutting weapon against soft targets, and it wasn't overspecialized or obsolete in any way until Cortez sailed west with horses, guns, and steel.
The mesoamericans weren't really primitive, but they were always more about craftsmanship than technology, and it showed in pretty much everything they ever made.
