set-off in one of most daring operations. Let's dump some pics in honor.

Damn I never realised there were more bongs at the Normandy invasion than burgers. Guess that's due to me being a burger and we're basically taught that they invasion was mostly us with a little assistance from being bongland.
>>
A handwritten note believed to have been drafted a month or two before the D-Day landings shows that Montgomery’s battle plan boiled down to a single piece of paper.
>>
>>30187228
if OP's numbers are correct, there were 73.000 americans and some 83.000 bongs/canucks involved. which isnt that much of a difference, considering the latter had 3 beaches and one drop zone whereas the yanks had two of both
having said that, Omaha and the american drops didnt go all to well, whereas the bongs/canuks were relatively more succesful (iirc) which makes them less interesting topics

I think the best battle plans are stupidly simple.

Napoleon is even to have said that he favored a bold plan to a clever one.

2 American beaches
3 British beaches
2 Canadian beaches

2 US airborne divisions
1 UK airborne division

Roughly equal, but yes you're right that popular history suggests the Americans did almsot all of it. Remember also that in Russia many haven't even heard of D-day, and they (rather correctly) see the whole western front as a bit of a sideshow.

Do you think those guys would have jumped out of that plane over France if they knew they were fighting so 70 years later boys could use the girls bathroom?

I think we shouldn't try to pretend that generalizing the opinions of tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of men is in anyway a good idea or good use of a post.

Yes, we should let genocidal fascists conquer Europe because something bad might happen in 70 years. What a spineless little worm you are.

>>30187281
That is a bit ridiculous, German air assets having to be moved between 2-3 fronts alone was pretty significant. And without the material support of the allies they simply would have failed.

I think that's a bit harsh, the Soviets weren't exactly fascist even if the shoe fits.

If "the shoe fits" is not the deciding factor if you are a fascist or not, then what is?

I want to, believe me, even my gf told me not to go to word (since we work together) and that she'll make up some story.

But i'm a paramedic, so letting peoples down in my field is not sth you forget about while you watch this great armada.rolling in the boccage.

At least I saw the 2014's one, shit was more epic than a Hans Zimmer soundtrack.

I'll try to go get some pics in the parade fields if they're still there when I leave. Just went by a small covoy of Jeeps and GMC on my way to work this morning, they were probably rallying the beaches.

>>30187272
That's in keeping with the French fighting spirit at the time. Boldness and speed of action was more important to them than meticulous planning. And there's some truth in that, when you have the right elements to use (as Napoleon often did).
>>
>>30187634

Years than don't end in "4" are more scarce, I'm not even sur that the French president will be there, it's more about some private reenactors from all across europe (there a fair share of Americans and Canadians too), rolling around with their toys in military outfits.
It's basically /k/ all around, at least when the ceremony's over, drunk peoples everywhere, shooting their blanks at the sky like no tomorrow.

In '4' ending years, shit is pretty formal, and there's even more vehiculs, tanks and shit around.
12 years ago there was a shooting range with actual WW2 weapons, except it was all pellet guns...

TL:DR, watch the 2014 one, best one around to this day.

My dad's old boss was a Major (or Captain) and was at one of the British beaches.

>beach was littered with British dead
>no time to clear them out of the way
>priority was to land as much hardware in as short a time as possible
>tanks were slowly weaving up the beach inbetween corpses
>boss runs up to leading tank
>screams at commander to drive full throttle up beach to support infantry
>all tanks share command and obey
>churned up bodies were unrecognisable after a few minutes

Incidently he got shot just beyond the landing zone not long after, he said it was like being hit full force by a sledgehammer, he had all tge wind knocked out of him and collapsed to the floor in shock. And except for a spell in Palestine in 1945, that was his war over.

The RAF had an entire command dedicated to it; the 2nd tactical air force. the U.S. 8th Air Force was dedicated to strategic bombardment (except for operation cobra but that was a shitshow) and the 9th Air Force had a mixture of tactical and strategic airpower. Simply put, the british had more aircraft suited for that kind of operation.

Damn, I was going to go with that MOS, but I've found I'm kinda squeamish. I guess it was a good thing to learn in highschool.
I'm gonna go 11b for a contract or two then re-assign as 12m (firefighter)
> I hope re-assigning isn't a shit show but what ever.
> I doubt I'll ever get to re-assign, I'll probably be dead when I'm 24 or so, 5 years to waste eh?
Cheers

Well that's an unfortunately american-centric way to look at it...

As a canuck, here is how I picture each world war's western front.
So you have a bar, and there's this guy, Otto. Otto picks a fight with William. William doesn't want to get his face punched, so he calls his little brother Ricky. Ricky's a lil bit rural, so he isn't afraid to take a punch, and he and Otto go at er. Loads more people get sucked into the fight, and now we're four hours later. Everyone is missing teeth, William has a busted jaw and once again Pierre is unconscious. When Steve shows up. Now, we called Steve like, three hours ago, so we're kinda a bit pissed Steve took so fuckin long. Buuuuut, Steve is fresh, uninjured, and brought a lead pipe and a helmet, so whatever, lets get this done. Ricky holds Otto's arms and Steve cracks him in the teeth and there, we're finally done.

America shows up late every time. Not because they are JUST SO GREAT THAT THEY END WARS and not because their glory hogging cowards, but because while they're still your friend, they're a little bit self-serving, so they wanted to make sure they were all ready, prepared, equipped, and fighting a wounded foe, so as to minimize risk to themselves. Even if it's sorta at the cost of their allies.

All of you seem to assume the US didn't do shit until Pearl Harbor.
Doesn't the Battle of the Atlantic ring a bell?

It's not because they want to be dicks, it's that America being an isolated continent it's pretty understandable that they tried to stay away from the usual European shitflinging that's been going on pretty much nonstop for literal millennia.

Well sure.
Hard to fault that, when Canucks get chucked into the path of every punch sent towards the Brits, because they'd rather spend our lives than their own.

I can see the value in just not getting involved. Hell, most Canucks want to fire the Queen these days.
