Alright /k/omrades, i want to get a handgun, preferrably in .45acp or 10mm, but my budget is around 350 for the gun itself. What do I get?

if you REALLY want something for home defense, a long gun will always trump a handgun in terms of "powah". A shotgun (basic model will be well within your $350) is more gun than a human being can take, provided you use buckshot or slugs.
If you live in thin walled apartment with more apartments all around you and don't want to shoot the bad guy, the kid next door, and the dog across the street, opt for soft/hollow point or plan out how and where you might need to shoot if it ever comes to that.
If you feel you need more than 5-8 rounds, you can look into a semiauto rifle or a used 9mm.
Of course you can't take and conceal a long gun with you outside of home, so I guess you need to weigh where your priorities are at.
9mm will be cheap to shoot, just don't cheap out on the actual self defense rounds. Federal HST, Speer gold dots, Winchester Rangers, all very good JHP for SD.

If you want a 300 something .45ACP, Rock Island Armory makes 1911 pistols in 9mm Luger, .40S&W and .45ACP, the GI model is the cheapest and the simplest, generally they work fine

If your budget is $350 for the gun then you have probably budgeted $100 to $150 for ammo if you budgeted ammo at all. Let's call it $450 to $500 for the gun and ammo.
500 rounds of .45 Gold Dot will run you about $250 shipped on a good day. You could cheap out with a box or two of Gold Dots and 500 rounds of ball, since you're going to be cheap about it.

Funny story: You're not going to get cheaper ammo with 9mm, and 380 and 40SW will generally be more per round. Where you save is the cost of the pistol itself, which you're not going to do against a Hi Point.
Ideally you should never have less than 1000 rounds. You should really not have less than 500 rounds. You should absolutely never have less than a single box of hollowpoints.
