Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread Thread

Get in here and ask and answer questions.

My question to you reload bros is can you recommend a powder throw for a beginner? I'm considering dropping the cash for the Hornady Lock N Load Auto Charge Powder Scale and Dispenser.

I'll be reloading for .223 and 30-06.

Are there any cleaners/CLPs that are specifically formulated to clean residue from corrosive surplus ammunition?

I know of the hot water method to wash off the corrosive compounds, but there are times when this isn't viable.

This isn't really a /k/ question, I'd say it's more of a /tv/ question, but I really hate it there. For all I know, you could be more helpful.

You know how in movies & TV, especially in the action genre, they sometimes have scenes where the bad guy is holding a hostage at gunpoint/knifepoint, and the good guy has his own gun pointed at the bad guy, then the good guy heroically shoots the bad guy dead before he can harm the hostage? It's in so many movies & shows that you've probably seen it thousands of times.

Anyways, has there ever been a movie or TV show where this type of scene happens, except the good guy accidentally kills the hostage instead of the bad guy?

I suddenly got into thinking about cliched scenes in fiction, and how unrealistic it seems that the good guy always manages to save the day with pinpoint accuracy. Surely this would be very difficult to do in real life, so I was wondering if there has ever been a movie or TV show that actually does something different with the ever so ubiquitous hostage-at-gunpoint scene.

>>30164522
It's honestly a easy shot anon, the stress of the situation could have an impact but still it's not that hard of a shot. In those movies how far away is the bad guy? Like 10ft Max it seems like, and hitting a melon at 10ft is child's play for anyone that practices marksmanship.

So no a cop or just random that haven't learned how to shoot could miss but they would frankly have to absolutely suck at shooting.

For AR10 shenanigans, if I were to get JUST the lower receiver, how picky is it if I were to mate a different manufacturer's upper receiver to it?

NO. At least not on my old Tanfoglio Steel in .40. The grips can be modified to fit, but they don't just screw on. In my own experience the Tanfoglio/Witness was actually much more comfortable than the CZ-75s I've held.

The extractor is a little claw that grabs the rim of a cartridge. When the bolt goes back, that bulls the casing rearwards. An ejector is a little piece of spring metal built into the receiver. The casing hits that and is deflected out of the action.

What's corrosive is the salt from the primers, teeny crystals that crop dust the barrel. Any physical liquid that can carry those crystals out of the gun will work. Water and solvents, not oils, seem to work better imo.

They are USGI mags. They use LaBelle's tooling and seem to be some of the best of the USGIs. PSA sells them for $7 ea. all the time.

Extremely stupid question:
Since we all know (or at least most of us) know that the myth that a .50 cal can kill even with a near miss is bogus I want to ask:

How fast must a projectile go before it can kill or otherwise injury someone with a near miss? Obviously excluding explosive projectiles (so no grenades, etc, only a solid piece of metal)

Science fiction levels of speed. You would need an object moving fast enough to create a pressure wave. Talking entirely out of my ass here, but I would expect a .50 cal round would vaporize due to air friction by the time you hit speeds where that pressure wave would kill from a foot away.

Regarding cavalry carry, I realize it's not in vogue, but is it retarded. It seems like it breaks even, with the positives countering the negatives of a crossdraw. It's more comfortable when in the car, and in a L2 retention holster it would be damn impossible for someone to take it from you from behind.

>>
>>30163403
To be honest, you are going to be hard pressed to find a powder drop that is capable of metering even fine ball powder like h335 within a half grain at your charge weights of 25-50gr charge weight range. For some people, that kind of variation is ok for blasting ammo. For me, that swing is unacceptable so I will individually weigh my powder charges for 500 s&w mag(40-50gr charge weights).

Everything else I load is mostly pistol, weights ranging from 4gr to 15gr and my lee autodisk is spot on with lower charges. Ill weigh the first few when I start loading and then every 25th or so round.

If I were you, I would buy the hornady automatic powder dispenser. Its a lot of money but boy is it a nice piece of equipment. I've wanted to buy one for a long time now but I just cant justify it. the only caliber that I weigh all charges is 500 mag and I dont shoot but 50-75 rounds a month.I hate dipping and trickling every charge but I can handle that amount.

I just bought two of those push-button lights from the dollar store. They use LED bulbs so they last longer and are brighter.

As for mounting them onto the safe, some of them are magnetic, so if the inside of your safe has any immediate layer of metal, it'll stick.

Worst case, you buy double-sided tape or adhesive velcro backing, which you can also get at the dollar store.

You shouldn't have to spend more than $5 to do this.

Why do retards think open-bolt semi-autos are banned here in the states when those ATF rulings only applied to very specific guns like the RPB MACs and KG-9?
>>
>>30163403
Yes, go with one of the automatic scale/dispensers. I have both RCBS and Lyman (older lyman). Not the fastest, but nice and accurate. I'm sure the Hornady is the same.

Just make sure you have a good, solid platform for it, absolutely no breezes (and/or use the included shields) and no fluorescent lights close to it.
>>
>>30170615
The fact that open-bolt semi autos are banned, maybe?
>>

No they aren't. There's no ATF ruling that banned open-bolt semi-autos.
>>
>>30170705
So everyone everywhere just stopped making them then? Okay
>>
>>30170718
Pretty much. Don't know why, the ruling that "banned" open bolts only stated that open-bolt MACs and the KG-9 were now MGs. It didn't state that ALL open-bolt semi-autos are now MGs.

>>
>>30170858
Because instead of showing me the ruling that said open-bolts are banned you expect me to waste time and money doing something I don't have to do.
>>
>>30170615
Because almost all open bolt firearms are easily modified to be fully automatic, and that constitutes an MG by the ATF. There aren't bans on open bolt semis but the ATF will most certainly fuck you over

I asked this in another thread but got no answer.

Why do you never see any Iraq or Afghan vets with the arrowhead device on their medals? Since air assaults are used so much wouldn't most soldiers in at least the 101st or SOF have them? Anyone that irrational is probably VERY afraid of guns, so they probably wouldn't touch your shit, for fear of their own lives.

As for being a "tryhard faggot," your country has the First Amendment, and it's your right to express yourself however you please.

That being said, I myself wouldn't have that kind of bumper sticker. Not because of the offense it may potentially cause, but because it indirectly outs me as a gun owner. If I had that kind of bumper sticker on my car, someone could put two and two together to figure out that I'm most probably a gun owner, then they could follow me all the way to where I live, then figure out when I leave for work or go grocery shopping, and then they can break in and steal my guns.

That being said, I don't mind spending a bit on some good mags. Did the Troy Battlemags ever turn out to be worth a shit? Should I try the Lancers too? Or should I be happy with my Pmags and Steelies?

The rifle they're going in is gonna be fancy as fuck, so aesthetics kinda count, but not as much as function. Honestly, I think the steelies will look proper.

Looked at stabilizing braces, been a few years since I looked at whats out there and discovered the "shockwave blade".

Umm...are they ever going to just get rid of the NFA status of sbr's? As a gun nut all I can do is scratch my head and ask myself "Lol seriously? The ATF is cool with these?"
>>
>>30175060

What's the problem? They have clearly stated that shouldering such a brace equals the construction of a SBR.

Currently poorfag nogunz but want to be poorfag hazgunz. Ideally would want a DP-12, luger, baret, all the fun stuff but too expensive for me. I saw pic related earlier and I'm wondering what the catch is with some of these cheaper guns (specifically the Mossberg 500 SP and the Rock Island Armory 1911). Basically, why are these so cheap and what am I really losing by buying one of these cheaper guns?

>Mossberg 500 SP
No catch here, really. The Mossberg 500 is basically the standard issue shotgun for people who don't feel the need to get fancy. Even at that, there's a lot of configurations of the 500 series. Some are nice, some will make you scratch your head (Like this fucking thing: http://www.mossberg.com/product/500-tactical-chainsaw-50460/ ) It's good and reliable, the aftermarket is pretty decent. Most of the 500 series is similarly priced. The 500 is basically the Everyman's Shotgun. You can buy cheaper (and there are clones), but why? You can also buy more expensive, but that's if you REALLY wanna get into shotguns. There's nothing really "missing" so to speak.

>Rock Island Armory 1911
I have heard that there are some minor parts compatibility issues, but not enough to warrant a disregard for the RIA 1911s. This is basically the bare minimum you want to go on a 1911. It may not be beautiful, but it is reliable. Made in the Philippines, like you give a shit. A better question to ask yourself is "Why do I want a 1911 specifically?" If you don't know or the answer is "Looks cool", give some more thought about what you plan to use a handgun for, and expand your potential list of features out from there. As for what the RIA is missing? Bragging rights. 1911s are great target guns, and some people claim they're greate carry guns. Some people also like Nickelback. The RIA will shoot fine, but nobody at the range is going to be impressed. Well, except the faggot on the last lane with a parkerized 1911 made by Taurus, I guess he will be.

Now fly, little poorfag. FLY GODDAMN YOU.

Another on the list, 10/22 for about 170$ is it still worth getting one and are prices getting better for .22?

The thing has that strange grayish wood furniture, with almost a hint of blue tint to it. It reminds me of the ocean, or sailing ships, I kinda like it.
>>
>>30175506
>10/22 for about 170$
YOU'RE NOT FLYING, GODDAMMIT!

Fine, neophyte. I shall answer your question.
The 10/22 is a rifle that some would argue everyone should have. It's a fine rifle with an excellent (really... fucking excellent) aftermarket. There are a few things to consider if you get one. First, the bolt release will inevitably anger and frustrate you. You will either adapt over time, replace it, or use your 10/22 primarily in a melee role. The first and second options are not so hard if you're not a complete waste of your father's seed. The third should only be an option if your father is also your uncle. Magazines can take a little getting used to, but ultimately are fine AS LONG AS YOU HAVE STEEL FEED LIPS.

Long ago, Ruger were huge faggots (Blame Bill, Clinton or Ruger... Take your pick), and only offered the magazines that came with the 10/22. Fortunately, a lot of manufacturers saw an opportunity, and made a shit ton of aftermarket mags with higher capacity. Badly.
There was great lamentation, and gnashing of teeth. Fudds did wear the traditional sackcloth to the range to express their despair. Or was that their improvised ghillie suits? I forget. Nonetheless, Ruger now makes 25 round mags that work just fine (as pictured in your pic). If an aftermarket mag is less expensive, expect to make up the cost difference in tears and hatred. That being said, some aftermarket mags have steel lips (like your mum's moneymaker), and work well.

After a time, you may want to consider getting a Volquartzen extractor, at which point your 10/22 will eat anything. Including your mum's moneymaker. Some people also replace the receiver buffer with a dense polymer one to improve performance and parts life.
I know the above things sound frightening to a neophyte. Don't be scared. If you can find a 10/22 for that price, snatch it up. It's a good firearm to get your bearing as to what the fuck you're doing. .22 availability varies by region. You should be fine.

What's a good bolt action rifle for target shooting at around 100-200m? With optics.

Also is there any reason to get a special snowflake round over a .308 if I only plan to shoot 100-200m?

>>
>>30173486
Built my first rifle pretty much from ares for just shy of $600. Its a solid reliable "just to have around" rifle.
>>
>>30176499
Only 100-200M? If it is just targets, .223/5.56
Especially if you don't reload. Ammo is much cheaper and at least as available as .308.

You have to be more specific on your usage for optics recommendation. Shooting precision for group size will typically demand a different scope than playing sniper or informal shooting.
>>
>>30175307
Thanks! and just to be clear I want a 1911 because of the safety and to my knowledge it's a reliable model. I'll still look at other pistols before I choose.
>>
>>30170657
>>30170775

Not him, but you're talking out of your ass. The ATF decisions only specifically targeted the RPB series of open bolts, the KG-9, and this one carbine version of a French sub machine gun back in the 60's.

The problem is that every single open bolt semi auto operates with pretty much identical fire control groups. Semi auto open bolts were *effectively* banned by the two rulings in '82, but at a technical level the other poster is right.

Don't take everything you see on fudd forums at face value. They're often massively oversimplifying things, or straight up wrong.

All i can say is thats a bad deal senpai. Wont say where but do research and you can find a 10 L5s deal that is 5 opaque smoke and 5 black for 125. though in all fairness, its usually out of stock.

Also hear that the ETS mags are kinda mooky, like how the hera mags looks cool but sucks.

I've got a bit of a pickle here. I was aiming to pick up a handgun for my 21st, and have found rather fantastic deal. My question is this: The shop says it offers "layaway" now would I be able to layaway it till I'm 21 or if I can't legally purchase it will they not let me?

Why no florescent lights?
>>
>>30178630
EMI (electromagnetic interference)

Can be caused by many electronic devices. Fluorescent lights are a common one and probably the most likely source near a reloading bench.

Electronic scales can be affected by EMI.
>>
>>30179120

Would LEDs be safe?
>>
>>30177953
Depends upon the dealer. You are not purchasing it until payment is finished and the 4473 is completed.

If it is an informal layaway, they might unless they think you're working for Couric or something.

If they have some sort of signed agreement, then they may be more hesitant.

No laws are being broken, though, if they are just holding a deposit and the firearm until after you're of legal age to purchase it.
>>
>>30179136
A simple LED on a battery with a current limiting resistor, yes.

A string of LEDs run by a pulse-width-modulated controller, probably not.

Load cells can be very sensitive to EMI. Cheap chinese load cell containing equipment like the available automatic dispenser/scales offer minimal shielding.

How would I iluminate the area I am working in if flourescents are a no-go like that?

Not like I can just go to the store and buy some incandescents.
>>
>>30179227
Every grocery store in the country carries the halogen bulbs. They're technically incandescent but efficient enough to get around the GE laws that outlawed the really inexpensive ones.

Whether LED replacement bulbs would be a problem would depend upon their design. I would suspect that most of them wouldn't be a problem.
>>
>>30179257

I would probably spring for the LEDs in that case, but halogens would work fine I imagine. I forgot about those because it's all about that flourescent game now, and LEDs past that.
>>
>>30179227
You don't have any filament light bulbs? I have a gempro 250 and I've never experienced EMI with traditional lightbulbs. If you can't find any at Walmart go to Home Depot and checkout the 'drop lights'.
>>
>>30179271

All the bulbs in this house are flourescent now. I could figure out an alternative lighting solution for a reloading area, but other than that, meh.

Thanks for the advice though, I would have been clueless otherwise. I'll look into halogen and LED bulbs.

Go to Home Depot and get some $9 drop lights. They just plug into a normal outlet and hang or clip from anywhere.
I use 3 to fully illuminate my reloading area because the only other source of light is a fan.
