Also, magazines designed for rifles and shotguns that are not both centerfire AND semi-auto and not pinned to anything. This means we can modify a semi-auto gun to accept those mags without issue (ex. 20rd Remington 700 bolt action mag in 7.62mm fitted to an M14).

No! It is based on the original manufacturer's intent. How it actually gets used is completely irrelevant. Here is the law in question (skipping the parts for specific firearms) from SOR/98-462 Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and Other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited, Restricted or Non-Restricted:
PART 4 Prohibited Devices
Paragraph 3
(1) Any cartridge magazine
(a) that is capable of containing more than five cartridges of the type for which the magazine was originally designed and that is designed or manufactured for use in a semi-automatic firearm other than a semi-automatic handgun.
(2) Paragraph (1)(a) does not include any cartridge magazine that (a) was originally designed or manufactured for use in a firearm that (i) is chambered for, or designed to use, rimfire cartridges.
As long as you don't modify the magazine you are golden. Just modify the gun to fit the magazine.

I have a Glock 34 Gen4 coming in that I traded for, which I'm likely going to trade for a Glock 17 (I dislike the long slide version). A couple LGSes have expressed interest in a trade, since it's a new, unfired example. I don't even mind losing a bit of money in the trade. I like larger handguns, too. I just think that 17s look more like how a Glock "should look". The longer slide on the 34 looks a bit awkward to me. Still, it'll be nice to finally fill the "modern double-stack" slot in my collection. Next is the YMA, then likely a bolt-action rifle (CETME FR-8), then an HD 12ga, then a Vz.58 and M305.

I can't comment on much else, but I love my VZ58. Was accurate out of the box, comfy to shoot, recoil was more than manageable, has gone bang every time so far, with about 300 or so rounds through it, easy to disassemble and clean. All in all 10/10 would eat ramen for months again.

I'm not sure where it was the surplus ammo, a bit of the new rifle hiccups, or if it was just too dry but my CSA was getting a few jams on my first outing with her.
After that though it worked great though, I switched over to the non-corrosive ukranian ammo and put a little more oil on the rails.

I've been running surplus Russian ammo in mine. It may have been left over packing grease from when you bought it gumming things up if you didn't clean it before you went shooting. Not going to lie, first thing I did was take it apart and put it together after cleaning it about 50 times. I would suggest it was oiling the rails more that helped.

Haven't tried a brake yet, but the front sight is definitely pinned on. I would assume you would also have to do some jiggering with the gas system too, but I'm not expert. Also, VZ58s apparently have a specific threading that is different from the AK at least. You could also try one of those threadless muzzle brakes that people have been talking about. Rod Giltaca mentioned a few months ago.

Then there's the obvious hassle of researching what's good, what's compatible, buyer's remorse when you're disappointed by flaws or discover superior parts. I built my own PC so I'm not incompetent in that respect. I'm sceptical as to the ease of doing so as a Canadian as well, whether certain parts are unobtainable or just so costly that the appeal/benefits of AR building that burgers enjoy would be negligible here.
I'd rather just save my pennies until I can buy what is assuredly the best, because I'd get more satisfaction from knowing that fact versus the satisfaction that comes with saying "I built this". Maybe in the future though. 80% lower builds seem fun.

Gear (exept stuff that attaches to firearms or Armor or NVG), Cleaning/Gun smithing tools, Cases/Storage boxes, holsters, targets.

Canam does production runs of IMI polymags
Press check ventures still makes their own G2 polymer mags
Armtac, Rusty wood, IRG, Northern Republic magazines all import real AA mags (The nice aluminum ones that cost +$80)
There are a few others I'm sure I missed but most companies stopped bringing them in when the RCMP barked at that one importer.
