Why aren't airships more common for airlift and replenishment?

They cost a hell of a lot less, more can be supported with a similar amount of people, they carry more and are more economical.

I understand planes when used for fast response. But continuous replenishment should be an airship only job.

Besides being incredibly slow and low altitude they have significant logistical issues. Mainly that that helium is incredibly good at not staying contained so modern airships require constant refilling.

Bullet holes are incredibly inefficient at causing leaks because the pressures involved are pretty damn low. I bet a single bullet hole would be indistinguishable from the average background loss of helium through diffusion. You'd probably need a few before you saw a spike in the data.

Plus if you knew you had a hole you can just send a drone out to patch that shit. Sure no-one does that now but I bet if it was a problem someone would just make a little robot that could crawl or fly along the ship and spray some fix-a-flat on a hole.

Hybrid airships like I'm talking about and what OP posted a pic of aren't designed to float with their max payload, but use VTOL or STOL, using vertical thrust for takeoff / landing and using aerodynamic lift during flight to assist the buoyancy.

The ML86X from Worldwide Aeros is the 500t concept; it'd be massive.

The one that they're actually going to build soon is a 66 ton payload 137m long airship.

Lockheed's also advertised a 50t payload airship.
>>
>>30138542

Completely not feasible soon because we won't have any helium.

>>30140515

You're right. They use much more stable hydrogen.
>>
>>30138542

Can't handle rough weather, too slow to get around it, and can't go above it while carrying a useful payload. Airships suck.

It is a thing, and aerodynes are better at that too -- WAY better - while going almost ten times faster, at that.
Hindenburg:
>11 tons payload
>163 gal/hr @ 76 mph
>Fuel economy: 5.1 ton-miles per gallon
C-17:
>85 tons payload
>3,000 gal/hr @ 500 mph
>Fuel economy: 14.1 ton-miles per gallon

>Hybrid airships like I'm talking about and what OP posted a pic of aren't designed to float with their max payload, but use . . . aerodynamic lift during flight to assist the buoyancy.
Exactly. They're barely aerostats at all. In effect, they're just gigantic inflatable airplanes.

Is bullshit.
>>
>>30141843

>What is no more national Helium reserve?

Helium will be prohibitively expensive to use for balloons and lift gas within our lifetime.

Fixed wing aircraft are actually more fuel efficient because they don't have to deal with the huge amount of drag that lighter than air aircraft do.

Because downcurrents during storms have killed almost every airship fielded by the US military

Because they're as slower than a plane and more vulnerable than a ship

Because transports don't need high idle times

Because that drone blimp that shit the bed and had to be shot down on it's cross country trek breaking shit with a mile of 3" steel mooring cable

That rules. What if you just released one of those in a hostile territory?

>Look, guys, just cut it out with the anti-american terrorism, and we'll get rid of that drone that keeps dragging a line through your town and breaking things. Maybe. To be honest, we can't really control it. It's just kinda there now.

>>30149253
Actually, what if you made a hot air balloon that does that, but uses engine heat to keep the air from cooling? I imagine a big ol' airship would need big honkin' engines for whatever props it uses to move, and for electricity generation for other things. Recycle the heat into keeping it aloft!
