I bought a 51 and it immediately broke. I sent it in and BM managed to fuck it up even more during the repair process, I sent it back again and they said it "was within spec".

I put the shit back in the box and never fucked with it since.

D2 is the perfect steel for cutting yourself, I think benchmade did this as some kind of cruel joke.

If you want a flipper, I would suggest a Bm42 clone.

Thank you my friend, another old pic, gotta add the two fixed blades I got in and the 15 albums I picked up last weekend.
>>
>>30130247
it was the Endura3, not sure where i left it but its been gone for months. I want a nice folder again but cant justify it since I was issued a Gerber tanto (not sure the model) last year and it works pretty well. just picked up an Ontario SP2 AF knife today though.
>>
>>30130216
how you like the Ti Lite? been wanting one of those.
>>
>>30130400
been rotating it through the EDC for the last month. for a 6 inch blade, it carries really well. Quite slim overall, fast deployment from the pocket, sturdy liners, nice blade. Overall, great value for ~ $60
>>
>>30130337
oh nice!
it's been a while since I've been able to cop any new records let alone knives

>>
>>30130373
I understand. They have some more affordable ones like the tenacious and some smaller depending on your budget. How do you like the Ontario so far? I don't have much experience with their knives but haven't really heard anything bad.
>>
>>30130449
same here bro, i go to the record store every few months, far less than i'd like to because every time i go theres usually an entire artists discography and i can only get a few. and yeah, spending $100 plus on knives every 2 weeks isnt easy on the wallet.

An OTF is considerably safer than a normal folding knife, there's no possible way to cut yourself unless you ride your hand forward of the grip... Safer than a fixed blade technically.
>>
>>30130473
Literally got it about 4 hours ago so no actual cutting/using experience with it yet but feels solid. Only had enough time to tie a lanyard on it and sharpen it so far and then i hopped on here. Got it because I wanted a nice full tang knife thats cheap enough to beat around and not feel bad about. Saw some recommendations on here for the Ontario 499, and the SP2 is basically the updated version of it. For $50 (Cabelas) ill take the chance that it might suck.
>>
>>30130530
safer, maybe. sturdier? no. and not everyone can afford a $250 EDC
>>
>>30130602
Bu the time you buy 2-3 cheap knives, you've already spent that much on stuff with no resale value, so you've threw away a lot of money.
No it isn't sturdier, but it's effective for it's intended purpose.
>>
>>30130530
^ this
you can open and close the blade one handed, do what you need to do with the blade than immediately put it away, making the knife safe.
>>30130602
don't fall for the meme and buy a Microtech. bet you anything this guy babies his knife. By a Lightning OTF for $20-40 dollars (shop around)
They are hella reliable. cheap, pretty sharp from the factory but I recommend sharping it yourself. Then feel free to do whatever you want with the knife without fear of scratching it chipping the blade cause you can just replace it. I have three of them. A dagger, and a serrated one and normal. I use the normal one to open beer bottles all the time. I've had them for about two years.
>>
>>30130653
dont you have to "load" or "reload" the spring loaded OTF micros?
>>
>>30130653
>buying knifes to later resell them
what
>>30130684
most OTFs are double action, some of the bigger microtech do need to be manually reset.
>>
>>30130564
Well worth the price in my opinion. Good luck with it man!
>>
>>30130697

I think his point is that 3 cheap knives cost as much as 1 good knife, and he's not going to be able to sell the cheap knives so you might as well just save the money and get a good one right away.
>>
>>30130684
No you don't. The spring is only put in tension when you start moving the switch. It fires out and fires back in. That's the entire fun of an OTF.
>>
>>30130659
Of course I baby a $250 knife. I'd only put it to serious use defensively. My leatherman charge is what I beat on.
>>
>>30130824
You aren't going to be able to resell it if you actually use it and beat on it. It's a $250 box cutter. With the lightning you can beat on it, if it breaks no big deal. and if you lose it. Oh well.
>>
>>30130835
Sure, but I think most people don't need a $250 box cutter. Unless you plan on using it as a weapon? You should try a lightning and beat on that for a while. I use it at work all the time its pretty handy.
>>
>>30130878
If I just want to open boxes, I'll use my leatherman. I wear it for work.
Microtechs are man jewelry.
>>
>>30130897
Ah its just bling, carry on than.
>>
>>30130862

I don't think he was talking about reselling the good knife. I think he meant that if you spend the money on cheap knives, you're not going to be able to sell them whether you've beat on them or not, and so you've just wasted your money because you still have to buy the good knife.

Honestly, I'm out of my depth here. When it comes to blades, I'm a fucking mall ninja.
>>
Anybody know of any good websites or videos on Karambit combatives? I don't think there's many good Kali practitioners here in the metro Detroit area to teach.
>>
>>30130907
I never buy anything with the intent of selling them so I wouldn't know. Nothing I buy I feel like I wasted my money on so thats just me I guess. I wouldn't beat on a microtech cause I don't have money like that lol but he doesn't actually use his microtech desu I wouldn't either lol

Pros
Holds edge for years at a time.
Tough as a general purpose knife.
Light and sleek, great for pocket.
Had it for years.

CONS
Won't notice it fell out of your pocket.
Not rust proof.
Hard to put an edge on it.
Screws are hex key
Screws need lock tight at specific tightness so as to allow free range.
Hard to clean
Fedora.

Things that broke on mine.
The clip
Lost a screw

Things I've used mine for
Literal hours of entertainment.
Cutting a fool.
Opening cans.
Opening packages.
Prying a bolted on sign off the wall to steal.
Throwing at things trying to get it to stick.

Any questions?

Not the whole family just 8 examples, I think my collection is around 90 knives now. As for the Espada I got it around January just after Christmas. I'm not sure if amazon was phasing out the Aus8a models or if there was a pricing mistake but I got that puppy for $120 shipped! I believe the Large Espada with the polished G10/ aluminum usually go for around $225-275 street. I got it for a steal ,I wouldn't have bought it otherwise but im glad I did. Its solid as a tank, came sharper than any other knive Ive ever bought, and is just a fun piece to have in the collection. I love eating steak with it, my gf says I look retarded but what does she now.

Woukd sure be cool to see one of those around here

I'm pretty much limited to what our tactical distributors carry.
That said, they still have a pretty decent selection

Limited selection here too. There's an army surplus store, cabelas, or ll bean or wal mart. Nobody else carries anything worth looking at, and all are overpriced.

I don't know much about flashlights, but I carry a Thrunite Archer 1A. It's about $36.
As for an EDC that will complement that price range, something like a Spyderco Endura or a Kershaw Skyline will do nicely. Or you can get a Swiss Army knife, if that's more up your alley.

Awesome blade steel.
Sharp Shitty handle.
Tactical blade fo sho.

>>30133864
The design is solid, but could also be greatly improved upon.

Firstly, the finger ring is pointless and needs to go, it could fuck up your finger really bad if you twist the knife while holding it. Take the part of the ring off and make it a deep but open finger guard.

Secondly, the recurved blade is pointless unless you are specifically making it to be a slashing tool, in which case you need to bulk up the mass near the tip. This basically makes it a kukri.

You either go full kukri or regular strait-edge knife, it serves no practical advantage to blur between the two.
>>
>>30139390
3.5" blade, 8.5" overall
3.5mm thick CTS-XHP blade, only 9mm thick total
Ally handle, 4.3oz
Right on $80

Stronger lock than both framelocks and axis, although I've never been sure what people use folders for that would cause the lock to fail.

Yeah it's interesting, lots of manufacturers keep making them and even their own metrics say that serrated knives sell a lot slower but I guess they're just trying to leave peoples options open

I had a similar one where I was looking for a long discontinued CRKT, finally found one for sale and sure enough, partially serrated.

Ontario 499 on bottom has little use, haven't camped in a while. Above that to the left is gas station tier that a tenate gave me, shitty at opening silage bales but it works, to the right of that and below the opponent opinel on the right are birthday presents, the one under the opinel is pretty good as a beater, knife in between those I accidentally stole from a date because she left it in my truck and wasn't interesting enough for me to start conversations with
Swmp3 under the other opinel was my first knife, and has served me pretty good
And spyderco C07P on top is my biggest Folder, edc's like a breeze
>>
>>30135613
i got a 485 valet, i think its good knife in the price point

the only problem i have with it is to get it in the axis lock sweet spot, is just enough for it to loosen up over time

i could fix it with somel octite but i dont want to, so its just a little on the tight side for it flick around like the axis lock wants it too

had the edge reprofiled though with a microbevel and its a slicing demon, i like the knife overall a lot and i may get around to the loctite, cause when its in the sweet spot its something else, but after a few days or so depending on use, the blade loosens up into play
>>
>>30144924
They're cheap, but pretty great qualIty for your money. Pretty much the folder of Mora's
When I carry that dragonfly 2, I usually have one of the Opinel. If I come across some nasty Shit out there or whatever, I'd rather ruin a 15 dollar knife than a 70 dollar Spyderco. I'm pretty happy with the Opinel honestly, those are both No.8 for size comparison

Thinking about getting a Kershaw Leek for that sexy flicker. Problem is it comes in 14c28n. I don't have any experience with this steel and bladehq only talks about how easy it is to sharpen. Any Kershaw peeps wish to share their thoughts?

Only want one since one my buddies son had a Kershaw with speedsafe and I thought it was damn nice.
>>
>>30145043
It's a refinement of 12c27 which is in itself a great steel and is used by the majority of European knife manufacturers. Compared to most competing stainless alloys in similar priced knives it's finer grained(able to hold a more acute apex and finer edge finish - "sharpness") and tougher but it probably looses out slightly in pure edge holding. End of the day though you're not going to notice too much difference from well HT'd Aus8 or 8c13mov.

Yes. It really eats up pocket space. Alone it was fine, but with pens and keys things started to get crowded. I only really had a problem with the weight while wearing stretchy basketball shorts around the house. Pants and a belt solve that problem though. Also, you've got to remember to carry another blade if you want to cut things in public without someone calling the cops :^)

Welding would be smart. I've got a cousin that could do it. I don't know anything about it though. Would it make a mess of the finish?

Not if he did it right. Ideally there would be only one or two little joins on the underside of the disk; hard to spot. The best method would be electric arc welding. Again, assuming it's being done competently. The application of heat should be quick and precise and not affect the finish or temper.

The designs are good but the ergonomics are sub-par and the price is way over the top for the materials used.

You basically pay for the brand and the design choice (of the knife and sheaths)

I'm talking about those knives that come with kydex sheaths. Those who come with plastic sheaths are a fucking joke.

You can always look for sales and outlets though.

The Benchmade model 51 has it's pros and cons. It's primarily supposed to be a "carry" Balisong. However, due to how light it is, it is difficult to do more complicated flips with. Don't let this discourage you if you're new to flipping, though. Performing non-aerial and non-complicated flips is relatively easy.

7.5" OAL, AEB-L at ~61 HRC, 0.110" at the spine, 0.010" behind the edge, ~10 degree per side edge bevel.

Nice, anon. Thought about getting the small northern hunter from lt wright (3/32'' spine, ffg), but can't find a place for it in my budget for now.

Yes, but honestly, I feel like they abuse that for marketing purposes.

Any high end maker, no matter if custom or production, offers the same no questions warranty.

On ESEE knives I feel they went that way to justify the steep prices. It's not like they are prone to breaking anyways.

what's the deal with that microtech knockoff?
>>
>>30155616
But they aremt a high end maker.tjye make good affordable no frills knives with excellent warranty.the fact they can do what a highend knife can do equally of not better for a lower price and availability means they are great knives
>>
>>30156108

Their knives are not affordable, they're very overpriced for the materials they use.

And no, they cannot do what a high end knife can do, nor are as comfortable.

It's pretty pathetic that you have to shill this way.

Chill, dude.

The other anon is kind of right, though. Esee makes very decent stuff, but outside of rb3, izula 2 and esee3hm, they really don't compete all that well with high end knives.

Rowen makes great quality though, i'll give you that.

Pretty solid considering I got it for 39 bucks
Fun as hell and it comes with a sheath as well.

Hes just mad he bought a expenisive custom knife that will never be as useful as a esee.hes crying through the salt in his eyes that his special snowflake custom knife sucks in comparison to something availablw to the masses at a comparatively low price.

Wish I had the Esee 5 for my last afghan deployent, the ASEKs are pure garbage and we weren't able to get Gerber LMFIIs. I ended up carrying a low end S&W Tanto.

Are Esee overpriced? Yes, a bit.

Anything higher end is going to be more over priced though...

People find knives like the Esee 3/4 uncomfortable? Can't imagine a more comfy handle.

>Trying this hard

Esee isn't *that* good. And there are many knives in the 130-170 dollar range that eat esee for breakfast.

Bhk woodsman or bushcrafter for example.

Define 'eat for breakfast'

Here you go. It's not a fair comparison, given the price, but it has the most comfortable handle i have ever used. The original esee are a little too blocky. The NEW esee though...

VERY good job redesigning the handles.
Also esee rb3.

More comfortable handle, better geometry - meaning thinner blades and better grinds.

Take a look at the bushcrafter hc for example, from lt wright. 3/32'' blade, kephart design and uncoated ffg + much better handle. 100 bucks.

I am in the UK. Everything is expensive here.

I paid the equivalent of $165 for the Esee 3. I like the blocky handle, can't complain. Have reground the edge to make it a better cutter but don't feel the need for a thinner blade. I have other fine slicers.

is there a way to make a handle actually ergonomic to your hand with finger grooves and not sacrifice the tang or stability?
