I'd imagine most street crime happens as a result of criminals just expecting victims to be unarmed. If their expectation were different, crimes would either be significantly more deadly or drastically lower.

Crime is going to exist no matter what. Just like every major prohibition of something has failed horribly, you can't ban your way out of crime. As long as there are laws, it's human nature to break them.
However, shitty awful things like Columbine likely wouldn't happen anymore. I will never forget the security cam footage of them just casually strolling through the library, talking with/shooting people who were huddled under desks. I can't help but to think if only one of the people in that room were armed how differently it would have gone.
Shit like that is why I carry in no-carry zones. That ain't gonna be me.

It would lower the crime rates over time, because more violent criminals would die. Today a rapist or a mugger gets to live and reproduce, passing on their inferior genes that predisposed them to idiocy and violent and impulsive behavior.
The reason white people have relatively low rates of crime is that Europeans killed off the underclass, i.e. dumb and impulsive people, for thousands of years. If the US adopted a similar strategy and simply executed everybody who committed a violent crime or is a member of a street gang, over time, the crime rate would fall drastically. My prediction is, that 40 to 60 percent of the Negro population would be killed off in the process. Those will be almost everybody with an IQ of 80 or under (~50% of Negros) and carriers of the so called "warrior gene" (~5% of Negros).
