What made the M-16A1 such a bad weapon in Vietnam?
>>
>>30120008
The fact that they advertised it as self cleaning, and the powder used in the ammo was sub-par. They fixed it mid war, however.
>>
>>30120008
The guy pulling the trigger.
>>
>>30120020

This. If you actually clean the fucking thing and don't feed it ammo it wasn't designed to take, it'll be just as reliable as any other assault rifle.

And yes, that includes the AK.
>>
They issued it before it was done due to congressional backscratching.

They told the GIs to reuse the magazines that were intended to be single use because McNamara was an idiot, which caused a fuckload of feed problems.

They also told them that because they're made of space age materials they didn't need to actually clean the rifles, the things were self cleaning. And didn't issue cleaning kits.

They also used the wrong propellant in the rounds to begin with.

Couple that with what the muggy jungle/rice paddy climate does to an unchromed barrel...

It's not a question of if they had problems, it's a question of how many.

Holy Messy Dog Shit. The A1 was delivered in 1967, AFTER the original M-16 was introduced and was plagued with problems.

The A1 fixed this by adding a chrome lined bore and chamber and forward assist. They were also issued cleaning kits and proper training on maintenance.

The gun wasnt the problem it was the fuck up in gunpowder that gave the pre-A1 M16s a bad name

Training and techniques was heavily influenced just so the wetdream of 1918 of Walking Fire actually became a reality.
Soldiers blew 20 round loads of 900r/m within seconds and had to rely on helicopters for ammunition resupply.

>>
>>30120008

I once got to talk to a Vietnam Vet about it. He basically called it a toy gun. He said he was given it towards the end of service, but then later got his M-14 back which was his favorite. He preferred the M-14 far above the "meat-ax". He noted problems with jamming, the magazines, and fouling.

One thing I noticed about some men deployed in Vietnam was that they would refer to the magazines on M16s as clips because they were initially trained with M1 Garands.

This, some fuckwitted committee decided to use one type powder instead of what the gun was specifically designed to use. They then went balls deep into the porcupine and decided to tell soldiers that it didn't need cleaning and didn't order any cleaning kits for it.

>>
>>30120251
it doesn't. full fenced lowers were common with the A1 after '64. you can tell from the lack of reinforcement at the rear near the receiver extension.

that isn't a A2 flash hider either. spacing is completely wrong. the A1 had 6 slots evenly spaced and slightly larger than the A2, which had slightly thinner slots and only 5 of them (omitting one at 6 o'clock).

while that' s a repro NDS (?) lower with the DoD acceptance stamp on the front of the mag well, it's reasonably accurate for an A1 clone. if you're going to nit-pick a clone, do the one thing that's outright wrong: the magazine is phosphate coated rather than anodized, and that's an A2 stock, or an extremely late A1 stock from a sporter. it has the wrong sling attachment.

It's actually the other way round. In 1954 came the decision that all of the Army's small arms are to use Ball powder. The AR-15 was designed several years later. So the question one should ask is why the guys at Armalite designed a rifle for the wrong powder.

Colt is incapable of not making buttfuck retarded decisions. Can't wait to see 2/3 of them get snatched up and immediately flipped to GB at 33% markup.
> The AR-15 effort represents the second Colt reproduction series to hit the market, after some new production Colt 1903 Pocket Hammerless pistols made it to the market earlier this year.
And that endeavor was a hilarious clusterfuck of an abortion that no one wanted. Save for, again, some kikes who flipped them on GB.

>>
>>30120008
It was a good design but was ruined by whiz kids of the kennedy era who decided to put stick powder in the ammunition. also 5.56 is piss poor for the jungle: bullets will loose any sort of accuracy if it comes in contact with brush.
>>
>>30120134
An AK can run dry by design, even if it's not good for it.

it's one advantage, but of course it's balanced out by other things
