How would you compare Russia's invasion of Afghanistan to America's war in Vietnam?
They lasted roughly the same amount of time, how were experiences similar or different?

Compare number of lost helicopter

They were similar in the fact that both rebel/Guerrilla forces had access to places that the enemy for various reasons, couldnt send in military units (North Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos and Pakistan respectively).

Russia only had to face the afghan mujahideen, with the support of the afghan army (although not much help). American had to face both the Viet Cong as well as the NVA. With minimal support from the south Vietnamese army. They were both losses obviously for the invading forces but for completely different reasons. The Americans lost the support at home, but the USSR could no longer fund a long drawn out war. It was basically the same in the struggle with guerrilla warfare.
