Do you (or anyone else here) have good sabre suggestions? I love the look of them and would like to have one for slicing a burglar's abdomen open with.

Thanks

>good sabre suggestions?
Depends on what kind you want.

Mines a Windlass made Ames manufactory 1860 repro. it's dimensions are slightly off from the Originals, so it handles a little different. The 1860s are based on the 1840s, which itself is based on an 1820s pattern French Saber.

Do you want a straighter saber? it'd be more like a backsword, but they're perfectly good. or do you want a more curved one, like an Eastern European inspired one?

Avoid cold steel, while a good chunk of their products are reasonably well made, they're dimensions are way off, and way overbuilt, so they feel nothing like any of the weapons their based off of. and that's even if they're based on a single sword.
>>
>>30088084
Well, the civil war is among my favorite wars and I appreciate things from when America was great so a design from that period. I know most of the guns they used back then, but little about the melee, unfortunately.

However, I know the sabre did develop in Eastern Europe, so a modern model based off of one of the older models would be fine too.

What you have there seems to fit the bill well enough. How sharp have you gotten it?
>>
>>30088084
Also, forgot to mention my only real complaint with Windlass is that they polish everything to a mirror shine. i'm letting the Scabbard on mine rust so that when i clean it, it'll be a bit more dull.

>Well, the civil war is among my favorite wars and I appreciate things from when America was great

I do too, after buying my Navy repro, i wanted a sword to go with it so i got me an 1860.

There are quite a few swords to pick from, if you want an American 19th century modeled blade.

You have the 1860s, which was one of the main sabers issued to the Union during the war and remained in inventory till around 1900. after which they sold a bunch to Hollywood.

The 1840 is like the 1860, but much beefier. This is the sword you'll see mostly with Confederate officers, because that's what was the general issue before the war. a lot of the confederate made swords are also usually based on the 1840

There are the Cutlasses, which are sabers meant for ships. They mostly the same as the ones used by the Army, but a bit shorter and wider.

if you want to go even further back, You'll find more curved blades. The Marines adopted a Mameluke inspired sword as their officers weapon. you can still see it's decedent today.

Before the 19th century, Hangers were popular. a Hanger is like a cutlass, but not as wide and not as heavy. think like a German Hunting sword.

There are a shitload of different models for American swords though.

http://arms2armor.com/Swords/usswords.htm
Here's a good list.

Kult of Athena is one of the best places to buy newly made swords from.

http://www.kultofathena.com/swords-earlymodern.asp
>>
>>30088257
Thanks a bunch man. The Hangers are cool but I think the 1840 is the most appealing. I appreciate the suggestion with Athena. I've browsed there before but never knew it's reputation.

It's from Bhutan, probably 18th-19th century.

The Tibet-Bhutan cultural region appears to have been pretty fond of this kind of single-edged cut-optimised sword. Especially the eastern parts it seems, as while we see three main types of "full sized" sword blades in Tibet (this being one), this is the only one of those that I've seen in the Bhutanese style fittings.

In Tibet at least these are often constructed with hairpin lamination, in Bhutan we occasionally see this effect enhanced by a number of narrow parallel grooves along the blade, or the grooves alone with a highly polished blade (so that whether laminated/pattern welded or not, there's no pattern visible).

My blade has no intentional pattern to it, but it's also nowhere near "monosteel". By the looks of it it has a back made from high and low carbon material folded together somewhat coarsely, welded to a pure steel edge. It's probably on the plain, workhorse side of things, and the middle section of the scabbard may have been covered with leather originally.

Here's a somewhat fancier one, carried by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck at some event.

Armour in Tibet, and presumably Bhutan, mostly consisted of metal lamellar and the occasional bit of mail imported from down south, with outer limbs occasionally being covered by hardened leather or splinted armour. So it would have been quite resistant to both cutting and stabbing with single handed weapons.

By and large cut or thrust appears to be down to personal preference in many cases (which in turn is of course influenced by cultural preferences). So every now and then we see people go for blades that strongly favour one.

A spatulate tip like this one should be a very durable one, especially when it comes to just clipping a piece of armour, a shield, or somethign like that with a swing that almost missed. And it should also cut a lot better if you do the same against flesh. That could be a reason to forego the pointier tip, even though such would make the weapon more dual-use.

>>30089763
Those tests, as shown, are advertisement, so they had better be impressive.

Now what such testing is sorely lacking is a baseline, say similar tests with a faithfully created replica (a opposed to Cold Steel's "not entirely historical" takes on things) so that we have a baseline for what's actually good here.

Then there's the issue where it seems that they often simply make blades quite thick (at its thinnest at least, it may also be too thin at its thickest, as they cut costs by using a thinner bar stock and not grinding it down as far), so whatever increase in durability they may have will often be at the cost of balance and handling. IMO that's quite fatal, a "sword" that doesn't behave like a sword is a lie in steel, whereas if I wanted somethign to clear udnerbrush with I'd get a machete isntead. Mileage may vary.

Also, as the issues they had with their grosse messer shoved, simply making the blade too thick may not make for a durable sword, when you have stress raisers in unfortunate places.

Their plastic buckler is quite nice for practice though.
>>
>>30089804
>we would actually consider using
I'd never actually use Cold Steel because they're shit isn't historical. an arming sword that's over 3 pounds with a POB halfway up the blade will feel like shit in the hand, because an arming sword was rarely if ever 3 pounds. it's stuff you can beat on with a fence post without worry.

You don't need a relic to have a good sword. at cold steels prices, everyone else makes proper dimension and weighted swords at the same price.

Sword, spear, mace...

As for things like hammers, axes, bill vs billhook, they do have their origins in civilian tools, but the weapon tends to be quite different form the tool, much like a Ford Focus meant for BTCC racing isn't quite the same as the one I drive to work in.

Sergeant at arms are the old heads of security for the crown. Their underlings are called Sergeants-at-mace or more commonly referred to as the "Sergeants maces". They were tasked with arrests and as the name suggests issued maces.
This was by no means standard procedure. In fact in Munich in Bavaria you had the polar opposite where the guards were issued swords specifically designed for them (pic related).
It likely came down to liberties of the executive as the intent of bringing someone in alive may be a hint at the threat of torture where in Munich the guards seem to have been ordered to disincentivize resistance via threat of death over torture.

The Swedish army's faschine knife m/1848. Appears to have been handed out as the general issue grunt sidearm during the latter half or so of the 19th century. Leans more towards utility blade than sword, but as with any machete or whatnot, it can make do in a pinch.

Pretty curious geometry overall. At the base of the blade things are much as you expect, with the spine being the thickest. The spine also tapers towards the tip. However, as the ridge line where the edge grind starts the blade rapidly end sup thicker there than at the spine, and around the widest part of the blade it ends up even thicker than the spine down at the guard. I guess the idea is for this to shift the centre of mass towards the blade, in order to make the blade less prone to twisting when slammed into something.

But yes, there's at least two worker blades there, the kukri and the fascine knife. The oddity on the far left can also be such.

Here's a pic more suitable for the discussion there, showing the cross-section of a broadaxe.

ZombieTools are a bunch of rednecks that build some pretty badass weapons made to kill, forged in spring steel 5160 with 55 Rockwell hardness. They have good price for the quality of the product, and they are prepared for combat, so they are pretty effective. And if you really wan to push it... But yeah, perhaps we can ignore this one. The previous ones should be sufficient anyway.

And to try and stick to the main point. Weapons and tools are different, since they are made for different tasks. Some weapons, like many spears, sword, maces and so on don't really have any corresponding tool. Others, like battleaxes, warhammers, bills etc do correspond to various tools, but except for some intermediary designs which we can find at times, the weapons and the tools are quite different critters.

As such, most historical weapons are not farming tools.

>no shields
Eh? What makes rapier worse against shields than any other sword?
>>
>>30087447
>>
>>30095726
The rapier was an all-around sword though, many of them were brought to battle in the early 17th century alongside their massive acceptance as a civilian weapon. Also, many treatises talked about rapier & shields together, even though it's rarer than rapier & dagger, it was still discussed and analyzed. In fact rapiers were very versatile as they were still fairly heavy, they could fight any other one-handed weapons and even two-handed swords that weren't the biggest ones (anything bigger than a montante); they were designed to face all of the common weapons, even against a short spear, a rapier doesn't lose that much ground, only perhaps against heavy polearms like pikes and partisans are you really at a clear disadvantage.

And this about multiple opponents:
http://hroarr.com/hack-slash-in-the-age-of-reason-italian-rapier-against-multiple-opponents/
(besides no weapons but the biggest two-handed swords are made to deal with multiple opponents at once, so it's a bit of a moot point).

It's just not true to think that rapiers were designed for a specific scenario, though they certainly are excellent for one-on-one sword fights.

Seems silly as fuck to ask, but how do synthetic/metal handles work with those?
>>
Buddy of mine who is a cop said that he arrested a pimp one night who used a flexible french curve drawing aid as a street whip to dish out whippings to freelancers who were encroaching on his street.

He said the streetwalkers were covered in horrible welts and looked like someone did them over with a weed wacker. Not much of a melee weapon but i thought that it was interesting.
>>
>>30101598
Axes in general, you mean? Or do you mean the maces?

Either way - synthetic are fine, as long as it's not some sort of cheap knock-off. Metal handles on axes are fucking stoopid, you need the balance as far off as you can, so you have, you know, heft. If you have balance point in the middle of an axe, it's gonna do next to nothing.

Maces are a little different. I wouldn't want a glass fibre or whatnot handle on a mace, because, y'know, they spring. Which is sorta fine in an axe, since you have a blade, but with a mace, you'd lose a bit too much of the hurt by that. And with metal handles on maces, there's the thing that they are fuckin' short compared to other stuff. Not to be too heavy and all, but still, they are very often made hollow, some late medieval finds had bits of rotting wood in the hollow handle. Quite possibly to avoid bending the metal tube when smashing shit.

Only wooden dowels for sale around here are pine, and I don't have access to a lathe, so I got two half-round sections of oak and joined them together. This of course left a visible joint, but as shafts in the Maciejowski have a bit of colour to them every now paint seemed like an option.

As for the kris, well, wood, brass, and presumably iron and steel of varying nickel content for the blade.
>>
>>30091959
Ontario still makes their Kabar alternative, it's about $30 on Amazon. The sheath is cheap nylon, but you can get a leather one in the classic Kabar style for like $7.

I meant the axes, but it's good to know about maces too. Can't really use them I legally for any practical purpose in my state through because they are legally classified as bludgeons (Faillinois). >a light cavalry saber is a pretty shit choice.
The 1860 was adopted to replace the 1840 because it was a much quicker handling sword. with many anecdotal cases of Officers opting to use it over the underwhelming 1840 Foot officers sword. But even if not so, the English and the French had been using sabers for foot officers since the 18th century. Hell, the 1845 English pattern which is considered one of the best foot officers swords in the anglosphere, was a heavier beast than the 1860 American saber. Besides, all the foot officers swords are all small swords and spadroons, all I've learned is saber. though in all honesty you could probably use them similarly without too much trouble.

This thing looks fuggin brutal. The only downside I can see to it I potential is the vibrations that would occur if you were to hit something really heavy and hard.

Any thoughts?

Don't need a guard if you wear gauntlets. same reason why shields were quite a bit rarer for people in a full plated harness.

Same reason swords used by folks in armor didn't have complicated guards.

Gunstock warclub is by far my favorite melee weapon.
Cheap, and it will put a crater in whatever it hits, spike first or not

From what I gather, against armored opponents, both cutting and thrusting will be ineffective anyways, so it doesn't matter if the sword is more cut-oriented or thrust-oriented. However, thrusts are by and large more lethal, as they make much deeper wounds. Also, due to the nature of poking, thrusts tend to keep the opponents further away.

The reason I bring that up is because duels were commonplace in Europe, and not so much in the Far East - it was expected of most gentlemen to carry a sword with them at all times, and by carrying one you'd be pretty much making a statement, that if anyone would mess around with you you'd fight to death. If you carry a sword in a civilian context, you'd most likely want something that made the other guy stay away from you and that killed him very quickly.

Duels in Asia were nowhere nearly as common and had a whole different meaning, as it wasn't so much about killing the other guy but beating him and perfecting your art.

So the Asians never had to design a slick thruster that killed people with maximum efficiency as they just did not have the need

>The reason I bring that up is because duels were commonplace in Europe

For a little while in some countries it may not have been all too rare amongst cocky young noblemen.

But compared to the use of swords overall, it's an extremely limited practice. Emerging somewhat in the 16th century, having what peak it may have in the 17th or 18th. And in many cases a far cry from the romanticised proper one on one fight to the death.

Here's an article on things: http://hroarr.com/fencing-culture-duelling-and-violence/

Likewise, to wear a sword in your daily life appears to have started more or less in the 16th century. Also, in the civilian context, a sword that killed your opponent very quickly may be a bad idea, due to legal reasons. There's apparently plenty of legal records where people state that they did their absolute best to not kill their opponent, but then he kinda lunged forward at the wrong moment when they were trying to feint a thrust and things just happened and he ended up very regrettably dead. All in all the best way to avoid being charged with murder was to not have a corpse at your feet.

As for Asia, we're looking at a huge range of cultures, trying to take them all in one go like that doesn't seem like a terribly good idea. The Tibetan culture we looked at above would in many cases have been a theocratically dominated one, with buddhism often, but by no means always, being adverse to violence.

Then we have China, which seems to have started out with warriors running around much like in Europe, but then shifting over to being more bureaucrat/scholar focused culturally, with the warrior being held in some degree of suspicion.

Japan spent much of its recorded history in one form of civil war or another, which lends itself to people sorting out their differences not by duel, but by means more akin to what was common in medieval Europe: plain old war. Plenty of wars may also help keep the warriors sated with blood. The impression I've gotten is that duels start popping up in the Edo period, when things where generally at peace, and the celebrated warrior caste spent most of their time wrestling the abacus. Perfecting your fighting art doesn't seem to have been an objective for very many, though in many cases systems where put in place where certificates from martial arts schools gave you a wage increase, based on kata/techniques known, so there was some reason to go to the dojo at least.

Then for India, Southeast Asia, the steppes, Persia, etc, etc..?

Try sticking your hand into a complex rapier hilt wearing gauntlets.

explain why the majority of European maces (which is a mounted knight or man at arms go to weapon other than the lance when it came to taking down other knights or men at arms on horseback) lacked even a crossguard.

because having your hand covered in plate meant you didn't need one.

Shields died out among the nobility for the same reason.

I'll wait.

>>
>>30110857
Except gauntlets don't completely cover your hands and there's still a chance the sword will cut through the leather covering the sides of your hand and your hand palm. Besides that, gauntlets have other cons like reduced range of motion and less mobility.
