Knife general 6, all knife related subjects should be posted here. Share your knives so we can circlejerk about it.

Starting off, one of my buddies son is about to graduate and go into the army in 2 weeks. Far as I know he's going to be working on diesel engines. Was thinking a nice multitool would make a good graduation gift, but I don't know anything about them and how beneficial one may be for his field.

Yo I need a large fixed blade innawoods knife that can replace a hachet. I was thinking an Ontario RTAK II. Any other ideas?
>>
>>30087357
Why not carry a hatchet and a medium fixed blade ? I don't get why everyone on this board seems to think they only need one tool in the bush.
>>
>>30087396

Because I already carry a leatherman. And my belt knife (a medium fixed blade) doesn't get any use. A hachet is heavy, hard to carry because it has to be strapped to a pack unlike a knife which can be strapped to my belt and or thigh.

My hatchet weighs about 2lbs. And is only really useful for firemaking. Where as a knife of the same weight can be a lot more capable.

>>
If this is way off topic, just call me a fgt. I figure blade questions in general might be welcome here. My weaboo friend insists that a japanese katana's design was better for cutting than lets say your average german messer or longsword c. 1300-1600, "because of the physics". Is he correct? My first instinct is no, based on admittedly very little knowledge.
>>
>>30087423
>I can't put my hatchet on my belt.

And why the fuck not?
>>
>>30091342
The Messer and katana might be equal in cutting ability I would imagine. They have similar blade profiles. Only difference would be the mass of the Messer versus the katana. Can't really tell the difference based on videos. Cold steel demonstrated both and the mass seems to come into play, but the cuts looked about equal.
>>
>>30091342
Cutting as in slicing, yes. A curved blade will slice better. Generally speaking, a katana will slice better than a longsword or messer, but there's a lot more that will come into play too.

Also worth noting that they were designed to cut in different ways. A straight sword will cut the way an axe does, where a katana was designed to perform draw cuts, a completely different motion and therefore a very different cutting animal. They'll both end up going through an unarmoured opponent, the biggest difference happens when you try to cut armor.

A katana was designed to defeat Japanese style armor, while European swords had to contend with completely different challenges.
>>
>>30093754
That's why I didn't even try to compare the longsword to a katana. Method is too different to compare them. The Messer though was shown using a fencing method from what I saw. Not quite the same, but it looked like it's a draw cutting style too with the ability to thrust.

I wouldn't call it trash or that expensive, right now you can get the 3.5 inch version for 75 bucks shipped on Amazon.

Overall it's a really cool looking design by a very talented marker that's known for his unique grinds. This folder has satin finish with really even and symmetrical grind lines and a awesome harpoon shaped blade, very mellow tanto with a belly thats great at utility cutting. Recurve if you like them (I don't sharpening is harder) really nice micarta handles. Eros are great but could use jumping on the top spine. Blade steel is decent Aus8a which SOG does fairly hard and it holds a edge well. It's a liner lock but I believe the liners are a little to thin. Zero up/down right/left blade play. Centered blade, good fit finish.

Overall 7/10

( don't go with the 4.5 inch like I did the 3.5 inch blade would make a way better EDC)

So I assume knife maintenance sorta goes in here as well, right? Anyhow, I recently got myself one of these Lansky kits, pretty much exactly like the one pictured. However, even after spending an hour going over my knife with each one of the stones in order from roughest to smoothest (making sure to apply the honing oil on them before grinding), the blade is still pretty dull. It's made from Sandvik 12C27 steel, so I doubt it's too hard for the stones or anything, so there must be something I'm missing.

you used each stone for an hour? you are going to fuck your blade
>>
>>30099769
No, I spent about an hour in total. I used each stone for about 15 minutes, taking it slow. I wanted to make sure I got it right, even though it didn't work.
>>
>>30099710
Use black sharpie on bevel the grind away sharpie mark with the stone a couple times to make sure you hitting the full bevel and reaching the apex(apex=Very tip of edge)If all of the sharpie doesn't dissappear then you have to remove more material aka keep sharpening. Also when your finishing up make lighter and lighter passes, and finish off by making only 1 or 2 light passes than flip and do the other side, do it about 3-5 times. This keeps reduce the bur.

>>

>>
>>30100506
Not really. Flippers are only marginally faster than thumb studs, and definitely faster than autos
>>
>>30100541
I've found thumbstuds/discs to be faster actually. It gets tricky on knives that use the studs as stop pins, but if you have a knife that has both, practice and compare them. AOs are the worst overall

nope.

A gravity knife is like an OTF, but without a spring.

IIRC, the idea was for german paratroopers to be able to just point it down and release the lock to deploy the blade and cut themselves loose from tangled parachute lines if they were hung up in a tree.

Nigger, you've been the only one so far to confuse the two all along. A flipper knife is called a flipper because it has a sort of "switch" protruding from the tang of the blade that you "flip" to deploy the blade. Ballisongs/butterfly knives are knives where the blade has two pivots for two different handle halves that can be spun around to close or open the knife. I bet you wrist flick knives, and that's why you think autos are faster, too
>>
>>30100991

So I started fucking around with my Junglas since I still haven't got a chance to use it. I draw the blade against my arm hair and discovered it's shaving sharp. Heard esee makes great products, but damn to even make a machete knife that sharp.

Now I'm sitting here wondering how do I manage to get to my knives to that level. I can get it to hair popping but not shaving sharp. I use a little manual sharpener that has 2 diamond plate grits for repair then 2 ceramic grits for sharpening. I then use a waterstone and finally strop it with yellow and black compound. I have to be fucking up somewhere, but no idea.

They are extremely expensive for a number of reasons.
1 Engineering. They pay excessive salaries to a large amount of engineers for production. They justify it by producing amazing tolerances in amazingly sexy designs
2 Tony and his legal fees. Enjoys suing and getting sued left and right.
3 Premium materials. Nuff said.
4 Mistakes. The otf designs that Microtech uses have no room for error. So if say a titanium handle is milled a thousandth of an inch too small, it all has to be scrapped. That includes the cost of labor, materials, and machine wear.
They produce nice stuff, and the best otf production blades on the market, but there is a cost.
Now, can I justify a $3000+ knife? No. But I can justify having a production Halo or 2.
Its good stuff, but not for everyone.

Question for you Spyderco owners, particularly guys who own lock back knives like the Delica or the Endura:

Do your knives pop open easily with the flick of a thumb? I see guys online open theirs faster than a switchblade and mine feels really stiff.

Is it a break-in thing or technique?
>>
>>30104578
I've got an endura with the wave feature on it, and I don't know if it's just the nature of the endura, but no mine doesn't just pop out if you push the hole. If I give it a little help with the wrist as well, it comes right out though.

But it only comes into play if the wave doesn't deploy it on the way out of the pocket. I absolutely love the wave feature.

>>
>>30104624
Right ? It's just awful.
>>
>>30104578
It's partially technique, but it's mostly setup and break-in. The Seki City Spydercos come really tight.

Here's what you do:

- Completely disassemble the knife
- Clean it to remove any trace of oil
- Put it back together and really tighten the pivot
- Open and close it a thousand times
- Take it back apart and oil the components
- Put a dot of blue loctite on the pivot screw and tighten it to where the pivot is as loose as it can be while still not having and side-to-side play in the blade
- Let the locktite set overnight

Now your knife is perfectly set up and all the components have mated-up to each other. If you can't flick it open now, it's just technique.

we abused the shit out of these blades, they are awesome. prefered the later km3000 though, much better blade shape for most tasks.
>>
>>30104635
friend of mine had one and we (myself and a few army buddies) tested the esee warranty.
we really had a hard time breaking it.
half pound tannerite killed one of the handle scales (dont recommend that, took us quite a while to find the blade).
we finally did it, by hammering it halfway into a tree and dropping a 100lb piece of steel weight from like 10ft (using a very impractical and dangerous rope construction).

got replaced, no questions asked.

we all ordered our own blade the next day.

Ten bucks. Full tang.

But seriously some budk pull string alarms on your doors and windows and a five dollar bat from goodwill or salvation army is a Way better set up.
>>
>>30101809

Colour the edge bevel on both sides with permanent marker before you start, use the coarsest stone you have on ONE SIDE ONLY until all the marker is gone and you have a burr along the whole length of the edge.

Then flip over and sharpen the other side until you have a burr along the whole length of the edge on the other side.

Once you have done this, work through each of the other stones alternating sides frequently until you get to the fineness of scratch pattern you want, then strop on the coarsest compound you have alternating sides with each stroke.

If you are still not getting good results, Google "burr minimization techniques" and use them between the last stone and stropping.
>>
>>30101924

Honestly, I would never buy something mass produced as a neck knife because they all have needlessly thick blade geometries for that role.

You can get affordable customs for that role that will be closer to 1/16" at the spine and ~0.010" behind the edge.

Pic related.
>>
>>30106522

eh, 1/8'' spine ffg with 0.02'' behind the edge, and wide enough not to make a needlessly steep grind is fine.

opening packages is all about cutting the tape anyway, and you can cut through cardboard, cordage, and whatnot without any difficulty.

and you won't get that 1/16 custom for anywhere near that.

Now - if you can casually spend 200 dollarydoos on a knife, by all means - get something purpose built.

Most of these days I just carry the two I posted in OP - the GEC is a 2.5mm spine, .25mm behind the edge (approx 0.1 and 0.01 inch respectively) - good enough for cutting anything that requires delicate touch. the other one is a 3mm spine (1/8'') scandi grind for general work.

Also carry a gec#18 coyote (0.08'' spine, 0.01'' behind the edge, 2'' wharncliffe blade) in the small pocket in my jeans (it weighs 0.97 ounces, so you hardly know it's there).

Unfortunately, it's almost June, so there is a marked increase in the number of summertime anons insisting "indestructible beater knives" like bk2 are great blades

sigh...

Do we have any knife makers here? Rookie here, in serious need for some help, about to just fucking give up.

I am trying to make a folding knife. I thought it'd be easy enough, but apparently it's rocket science, or I'm just fucking retarded. Gonna go with the latter. How do I go on about this? Is there a process or formula to follow? I can't get any of the proportions/anatomy right at all. I can't figure out where to put the stop pin so it'll work, but won't hit the tang of the blade as it opens. I hardly have any surface area for a locking face. And the grip is entirely wrong and stupid. As it is right now, the stop pin works, but there is no portion of the blade accessible when closed, which is a problem since I can't work in a flipper, and need thumbstuds/disks to deploy it.
>>
>>30110283
Generally speaking, if it's cheap it's not worth it when it comes to Damascus. On eBay they got them too. Look and see if they're from Pakistan or made in Pakistan. If so then avoid it.
>>
>>30110726
>I am trying to make a folding knife. I thought it'd be easy enough
Most knife makers start out making fixed because they're much easier than making folders. Folders are inherently more complicated because of all the moving and tiny parts, which is why custom folders always cost more than custom fixed blades from the same maker.

I more meant that a neck knife type role is probably the best use case for getting a relatively affordable fixed blade custom with a *really* thin geometry.

As an owner of that knife I will say its the most uncomfortable handle I've ever held, you can wrap it with paracord and fix the problem or make scales for it but otherwise the blade is good

For the wrap I just did a single strand around the finger groove area then a 180 wrap on the end ton add bulk

The bk11/14/24 are fine without scales or wrap but they still benefit from it
