I got my tech license and didn't find out till afterwards that your call sign is linked to your name in an online database anyone can search.
That part of it is total bullshit but the test is cheap and piss easy, I missed getting the next step up by one question with literally 20 minutes of studying while I was waiting to take the test since I only found out then you can just chain tests together at no extra charge if you take them in one sitting.
Also if you ever go to a Hamfest most of the people there are really autistic and won't sell you anything if you don't have a call sign.

Japanese radio manufactures have stagnated in development while inflating their prices for a long time, and this has been a long time coming. If baofeng has done nothing else for you it's caused the big japanese manufactures to try and get competitive again. Otherwise it would be a trust like cannon and nikon who release similar cameras at similar prices ever year, while making minimal progress in price or megapixels.
