The absolute pinnacle of propeller driven aircraft. Too bad the newfangled jet engine had to take all the development cash and kill it.

In October 1965, to highlight the dropping of the six millionth pound of ordnance, Commander Clarence J. Stoddard of Attack Squadron 25 (VA-25), flying an A-1H, dropped a special, one-time-only object in addition to his other munitions – a toilet
You find so much by just googling B 17 and going up in number

are you guys even trying?
>Unlike standard propellers that turn at subsonic speeds, the outer 24–30 inches (61–76 cm) of the blades on the XF-84H's propeller traveled faster than the speed of sound even at idle thrust, producing a continuous visible sonic boom that radiated laterally from the propellers for hundreds of yards. The shock wave was actually powerful enough to knock a man down; an unfortunate crew chief who was inside a nearby C-47 was severely incapacitated during a 30-minute ground run. Coupled with the already considerable noise from the subsonic aspect of the propeller and the dual turbines, the aircraft was notorious for inducing severe nausea and headaches among ground crews. In one report, a Republic engineer suffered a seizure after close range exposure to the shock waves emanating from a powered-up XF-84H.

would fuck an aircraft carrier for a good hour.
Clean decks are key in carrier ops..
imagine all the little bits of porcelain they d have to look for.
but for a milestone of dropping.
Maybe not the most badass, but certainly hands down the most beautiful.
>>30060586
Can't they just tie down a few jets at strategic places, crank 'em up and blow all the bits overboard with exhaust?
The design never went anywhere, but it sure looked good. Hughes XF-11
>>30063176
Fuck yes, I was just about to post the Rainbow.
I wish someone would build a replica of this and race it at Reno.

>>30063952
It very well could be. The plane did exist though, although the one with the contra rotating props was the one Hughes crashed. The other prototype had conventional four blade props. It was a nice looking design, although I read that it's low speed handling characteristics were not good.

WHOS ARSE IS DROPPED?
>>30066007
This almost happened to me once. I was sequenced and cleared to land and some fucknut in an ultralight cruised in at treetop level without clearance (or perhaps mistaking my clearance for his own) and turned final right fucking below me. Fortunately the controller spotted him and told me to go around just as I crossed the runway threshold. Never even saw him.

I have an online friend who insists that the Bf-109 was the most gorgeous warbird to have ever been created.
I honestly don't understand the aesthetic appeal of the 109. Said friend also thinks that early 109s with blocky wings and truncated engine cowls count as aesthetically pleasing.
>Uhh-mouthed intake
>Blocky cockpit
>Paintschemes mostly on the greyscale
Seriously, the Finns and Hungarians were the only ones who actually painted their 109s well.
>>30056338

>>30067456
Agreed. I can appreciate the Bf. 109 for the success that it was, but damn is it ugly.
