Are the dimensions and pin placement on the Jmac 74NK gas block close enough to the Russian 90 degree one that I won't have to spend a fortune on getting it to fit?

I don't really feel like going through the hassle of getting a 114 dollar piece of metal shipped to yurokekistan, only to find out that it doesn't fit muh Saiga.

Mag update
5.45 rpk mags will probably be $50 a piece, used plums are $20, NOS (new, old stock) 7.62 bakes are $35 and 40 round 7.62 bakes are $90 and aluminum 7.62 waffle mags are $90
Nows the time to jump on that band wagon
There will probably be two orders, the first one for plums and rpk mags, and the second for everything.

Sure thing. You're dealing with different gas pressures in piston gun like the AK than a DI gun like the AR. The bolt on gasblocks are "okay" in AR's, not in AK's.
>those 2 cases were when their owner took them off and didn't reinstall them properly
Sure thing pal. Ask yourself how many post samples with tens of thousands of rounds have bolt on gas blocks.
>Please, provide any more evidence of them being an issue and not another case of an anon talking out of his ass because he heard something bad about it on /k/ once and continues to parrot it.

Again, prove that they've caused issues. Don't worry, I'll wait.

> Ask yourself how many post samples with tens of thousands of rounds have bolt on gas blocks.
What does that have to do with that guy wanting to put it on his rifle? He's not going to run it like a post-sample.

He's still building plenty of rifles using them and I've neither seen, nor read any complaints involving the gas block, therefore someone is using them (even on post-samples) and there's no proof they're not working.

I have doubts of it being a replica because on the first picture I put up,underneath the triangle, there's a divet or small dimple where I think they checked for hardness. I don't think they would go that far on a fake right? Atleast I hope not.

>>

It's not Russian. The Russians have never made one that looks like that and they've never done the hardness test right there. Looks like it was probably US made in imitation of a Russian 100 series brake. Not sure who made it but I am almost positive it's US made.

The biggest discrepancy will either be the internal diameter of the gas block or the location of the gas port hole. Measure your barrel at the gas block and make sure it matches up with the specs listed on Jmac's website. If the location of the gas port hole is off, it complicates things, but it's not impossible to make it work if you have a few simple tools.
>>
>>30054265
I'm having a gunsmith do it, I just need to know what receiver I need now man
>>
>>30054900
Depends entirely how much you're willing to pay your gunsmith to drill holes and stuff. Also make sure that your gunsmith actually does AK builds, a lot of them don't.
>>
>>30054900
You need to find out if your gunsmith actually does AK builds regularly and has the equipment for it. If not, then you're sending your kit to be destroyed.

I'm not sure how the name for it is English, but the part of the barrel that is directly facing you if the bolt is open. I'm basically wondering if it's possible to have an AK where you can just change bolt heads to maintain them.
Or AK knockoff/derivative.

>I'm not sure how the name for it is English, but the part of the barrel that is directly facing you if the bolt is open. I'm basically wondering if it's possible to have an AK where you can just change bolt heads to maintain them.
>Or AK knockoff/derivative.
In order to check headspace, the mating of the bolt/bolt face and the ass end of the chamber you need headspace gauges. Usually when replacing the bolt in an AK you have to reheadspace the rifle, which involved pressing out the barrel pin, pressing out the barrel, and then pressing it back in until it headspaces on the new bolt, at which point you oversize the hole and barrel pin groove and press in a new oversized barrel pin.
>>
>>30055657
I understand that, but I'd like to know if there's an derivative or knockoff that allows you to bypass this and hypothetically, maintain your rifle indefinitely without requiring a press.

I sent a message to the seller asking about it. I bought it as BNIB and I can deal with cosmetic issues like paint or scratches not on the actual lens, but a scratch on the lens just kind of sucks. It'd be different if I was buying a scratch and dent model and not paying full price he's asking for BNIB models, but paying the same amount of money for something that for other people is BNIB is just kind of shitty. We'll see what he responds with. I'd be totally fine exchanging with him for another he has on hand but he's now out of stock after two other buyers bought the last Obzors he had.

SLR-107FR

Avoid ones that say XM55 next to the serial number if you can. They're not all bad, but a few have had finish issues.

Also, swap out the trigger for an ALG AKT. Then you should have a damn fine rifle.

Don't get sloppy on inspecting potential buys though just because it's a 1000 dollar rifle. Check the fit, finish, canting, headspace, loose rivets, unusual blemishes, or anything else that can make you regret an AK buy.

Eh,,, I'm going to be honest, an AK isn't really the best first gun. It's a good first semi-auto rifle though. Personally I'd suggest you get yourself something in .22lr and get the basics down first.
>>
>>30061919
Barrel is clean, its rivits are all in place and tight, no wobble from fruinture, threaded barrel, make sure its not a... IO inc, ras47. Test the feel of mag in and out, make sure its smooth.

Avoid IO Inc, the RAS47, the C39v2, etc... Pretty much, just get a WASR and make sure the front sight base is in line with the rear sight, minimal magazine wobble, uh yeah, a bunch of stuff. Also just do what: >>30061949 said. Get a .22lr rifle and get familiar with shooting and terminology.

I want to save money, shoot things, and preferably get a neato sight for whichever I get, along with lots of boolets and mags.

>>30050593

You get an AK because you WANT an AK.

Sure, the ak has a far better surplus market, cheaper ammo, and the "ak reliability" meme. But the AR is more modular, more versatile, more expandable, more ergonomic, and definitely far more serviceable (compare changing an AK barrel with an AR barrel).

Ultimately one gets an AK for the same reason one gets a Harley Davidson. The mystique and cool factor, not because its better than the competition.

And this is coming from someone who owns and prefers AKs.

I'm guessing he meant the gas tube handguard.

The gas tube handguard is the same as any AK, but if you want to put an RPK lower on, you'll need to modify the rear lug on the handguard to fit it to a Vepr 12, as the RPK's is bigger than the standard Vepr 12.
>Left, RPK plum (before modification) right, regular Vepr 12

See what I mean?
Not sure if wood RPK handguards are like this, but I'd assume they are so be prepared to do some filing/sanding.

well a 7.62 rifle gives you cheaper and easier to find magazines, vastly more ammo choice, and more aftermarket.

What would be the appropriate muzzle brake for a 1988 themed rifle? I've currently got a surplus zigzag brake on it (not sure of country of origin, anybody know how to tell between Russian, Bulgarian, and East German?) but those were phased out in the early 1980s. Would a zigzag still be appropriate on a rifle in the late 80s, or should I be looking for a two piece smooth collar brake or just the current standard 74M series brake? How uncommon are the two piece smooth collars?

Matte plum furniture was produced from the mid 1980s up until around 1990, and my sling is 1988 dated, so all I need are a proper brake and a proper Russian bayonet instead of this (10) bayonet.

Oh, and of course the Obzor is entirely anachronistic for the rifle, but I don't care it's neat and I like it. I'll just take it off and pretend it's a 74N when I want to fit the theme.

Compare to 14 dollar eastern european 7.62x39 surplus mags. Or 15 dollar PMAGs for the AR-15.

Then extrapolate out the cost when your'e purchasing 10 or 20 mags for your gun.

Even going off of your cost (russian plums are closer to 40 bucks), that's in the territory of a couple 1000-round cases of Golden Tiger worth in ammo saved. Or a fucking Obzor for that matter.

I've bought plenty of Russian plums in the $25-$35 range. NOS plums hit around $40, but just buy like new surplus mags for cheaper. I've got nearly three dozen 5.45 mags and the most expensive one I've ever bought was $45 for a new production (10) mag from Kvar when I first bought the rifle. I'd say about 80% of my mags were bought for around $30 and I'm really picky about condition (I'll resell ones that are too ugly for me after buying them). $30 a mag isn't bad at all.

I should also note that about 80% of those mags under $30 were plums, too.

You want a faceted 2-piece brake. The ones that look hammer forged.

Awesome.

You sound like the kind of person who complains about every single type of pistol because they aren't $400 Glocks

Also. It's probably Bulgarian, just going off of probability. If it's Russian you should see a proof mark on the narrow rectangular cutout on the underside of the brake. I'm not sure how to differentiate between Bulgarian and EG but the Bulgarian is more common in the US so I'd bank on that.
