anzac is one of the strongest us allies in the pacific, along with korea and japan.

a chinese conflict could actually happen so it's rather important that the us allies remain militarized

I can understand ships and airplanes but tanks? Nobody is going to invade Australia.
>>
>>30049773
Australia is far away from her allies so she needs to be able to stand on her own for a bit. The threat of Japanese invasion in WWII resulted in a bunch of marines getting stationed there and it didn't go so well, with riots and murders.

Its fairly strong for 23mil though, plus the fact you cant just roll tanks into it and has quite extensive radar and satellite assets. Indonesia mostly.

Which only makes you wonder why did they buy M1 Abrams instead of Leopards 2 since the logistical train using any gas-turbine powered tank is enormous and the kind of warfare they would likely carry on in case of conflict is island-hopping. Which should've discouraged them from buying Abrams.

I mean the Marines used M4A2 during WW2 because they were diesel-powered and as such they used the same fuel as warships did, which simplified logistics significantly. They literally didn't cared about quite a lot of weight that engine added because logistical base they've had was already overloaded.
>>
>>30051208
Abrams is meant primarily for defensive use, hence why it's never been sent overseas. If we went to war with Indonesia, we'd either have US logistics support, or it'd be a swift Israel-style attack, mainly by air and sea; we don't have the numbers to try and beat them on the ground.

>M1 Abrams instead of Leopards 2
The military wanted a 2nd rate tank that had crappy export grade armour, drank like the irish and has to stay in the kiddies end when it comes to water. Then... someone figured out that, oh it can't actually fit on our landing craft, most of the trucks we had couldn't carry it and we stuck most of them in the NT where its either insanely hot half of the year or completely flooded for the other half.
Pretty typical for most military spending in a lot of cases
>>
>>30049827
Key to tanks use can be seen in the Armour package chosen. The current setup offers very little protection against apfsds rounds (no du or similar). But very good protection against heat rounds (rpg and atgm).

They are to ensure aussies can contribute useful armour support for them selves in the urban guerilla and counter insurgency style fights.

After all the purchase of these was probably decided not long after iraq.

There were several reasons why we went with M1 Abrams, some political, some practical.

IMHO we should have gone with Leo 2's, but apparently Germany didn't want to sell them to us because of our involvement with Iraq. Or wasn't going to give us a good deal because of that. (Not 100% sure, but that sounds like something that Heretic Merkel would do.)

But the practical reasons were much more convincing. Firstly, we can train our crews in Australia and if (when) the US gets into another shit fight, we can just send our crews to crew US tanks and get them some combat experience. We don't have to send crew, tanks and support... just the guys and let the yanks worry about the rest of it. Much cheaper for us, and lets us contribute more.

Secondly, it shortens our supply train in multiple scenarios. If we DO send tanks overseas, 99% of the time Americans will be there and we can use american supply chain/parts rather than worrying about trying to get our own unique bits there. If Aus gets invaded the Americans (hopefully) shouldn't be to far away with a shitload of spare parts for their tanks (and ours) which ties in to the ANZUS thing.

>>

>The military wanted a 2nd rate tank

If that were the case Australia would have bought Leopard 2A4's while Germany was selling them cheap.
>>
>>30049773
We have a lot of land, a lot of resources, a strategically very useful location and a fucking massive and difficult to defend border.

Australia's main aim in defence is utilising small numbers of highly advanced units to defend the sea to the north, east and west of us.
If invading Australian doctrine is to switch to guerilla tactics and I believe there are actual contingencies for arming the population in the event of invasion.

The US only uses DU because DoE has massive amounts of it laying around, making it virtually free. Other metals can work just as well.

my ex was a Chinese girl who was born here. She could speak Cantonese and Mandarin perfectly yet she still spoke with an Aussie accent.
You can slightly differentiate an Asian-Australian accent from the normal Australian accent by a slightly more open nasal tone kinda like if you talk while letting a tiny amount of the air through your nasal passage.
She was gorgeous too, with tits and an ass that did not belong on an Asian.

>mfw
>>
>>30058032
It's still export armor. We got a gimped tank that will never match the protection of the US equivalent.

Should have gone with someone else.
>>
>>30058159
You chose that armor, which is better than what you would have gotten on the 2A4's Germany was selling. You could have had the DU armor if you wanted.

And you have a different armor package than the Arab countries got.
>>
>>30058159
What else was there?
The British offered Challenger II at over twice the price of Abrams. This was rejected due to the absurd cost.
The Germans offered Leopard 2A4, 2A5 and 2A6 from stocks. This was rejected due to quality concerns and the fact they wanted new tanks.
The Swiss offered the Panzer 87, an upgraded Leopard 2, but it was not in production.

The Americans offered the AIM Abrams, a solid tank in production and at low cost.
