Would a modern version of samurai armor made of kevlar and plating be effective armour on the battlefield?

Could you take something like an IOTV set and dress it up to look like a samurai from 20 feet? Sure.

Anything like the face mask, neck and leg armor is just going to make you hot and slow.

That can be done. Although folks like me would shoot at you first.

Why? Samurai armor was made to be mobile and allowed ease of movement as well as the best protection afforded to people at that time. Knight armor was big bulky and required help to even get on a horse.
>>
>>30040809
Because we'd be using something akin to plates, so why not got for something sleek, aesthetic, covering and effective
>Knight armor was big bulky and required help to even get on a horse.
Yeah and when they fell down they couldn't get up, and it took them 10 years to swing a sword right?

No modern version of anything would be effective on the battlefield. Modern anything is effective on the battlefield. I suggest you should grow up.
>>
>>30039861
yeah if you used modern materials and techniques you could make somewhat bullet and shrapnel resistant armor that follows the pattern of samurai armor. the problem is that it would be heavier and more cumbersome then what we have now.

you don't need shin and forarm guards because we aren't facing blade wielding opponents anymore.

you don't need the large armored skirts or the shoulder pieces because those are ment to to stop arrows while on horseback. if they were made of a ballistic panel with ceramic composite tiles attached it would block shrapnel and some bullets but it would be pointlessly heavy and cumbersome.

generally you are either on foot and you need you mobility so that you can avoid being hit or you are inside a vehicle and then its armor is protecting you. The point of samurai armor is to protect a man seated on a horse not to protect a foot soldier.

Laminar and Lamellar armors can be done with modern materials but generally its pointless to do so. the large iron Cuirass that they wear is very similar to a body armor vest anyway.
>>
>>30040860
i personally think that samurai armor is very cool and has it's place in history as an effective armor in the place and time period it was designed for. It wouldn't have been very effective against European weapons of the same time and it was pointlessly ineffective against firearms. It was rightfully abandoned because if armor gives you no protection then it doesn't matter how cool it makes you look.

i think it would be really cool if japan uncucked its military and designed new modern combat uniforms and somehow gave a nod to the samurai design. such as removable ballistic masks that clip into he helmet.
>>

if you made lamellar armor out of the same materials as you made a traditional modern body armor it would preform better then that armor because it would be multi layered. that was what dragon skin vests were.

they preformed better in the area of protection but the army killed their project by banning it.

it wasn't a load of horse shit. it was just not a complete design when the started selling it. it had problems with the adhesive holding the discs together in the heat. dod contractors, members of several us special operations units, military contractors, and body guards of generals wore this shit. I'm not saying it was fucking perfect. im saying it was a legitimately promising idea and they could have made it better.

Samurai armor was designed mostly to be effective against arrows when leaned forward on a horse.
Unless you get them riding superbikes, the entire design is negated.
Samurai armor, just like katana, only made sense in feudal japan.

The helmet is a stechhelm, a jousting helmet
The "armpit shield" is called a rondel, which was usually a disk over spots that the plate armour didn't cover, like your elbows and armpits
Those the leg thing, are just fantasy shit, you'd have faulds attached to your breastplate hanging down, and probably Cuisses covering the leg, but not shaped at all like his retarded armour

Pretty much this right here.

Shit is heavy and clunky and it's not like you're still going to want to take a bullet to the face even if it doesn't penetrate.
>>
>>30042796
What this guy said. Rather have no armor desu.

Less weight move faster, avoid get hit all together.

Getting shot with our without body armor is still gonna do a good deal of damage and had a decent chance of taking you out of the fight regardless.
>>
>>30040992
Shields don't work for rifle fire...
>>
>>30041218
Multiple layers is worse than one layer. Otherwise we'll be using ceramics with multiple paper-thin layers. And we don't.

Not to mention a single monoltihic block is the best way of getting the surrounding material to support the material being penetrated, instead of whatever dubious bullshit you no doubt are thinking of. On top of that, look at all those overlaps. Extra weight for no real purpose.
>>
>>30042863
Not him, in fact was a person arguing against him, but the whole point of it being overlapping is that the disks share strength, so you can't just shove a dagger through a gap
Also lameller was p strong, there's a reason cataphract covered themselves in it
>>

>On top of that, look at all those overlaps. Extra weight for no real purpose.

Are you aware how dragonskin is supposed to work right?

I mean it had it's fault from being heavier then the interceptor vest and failing to stay together in army tests due to heat and so on.

But what you said is wrong. It is actually extra weight for extra protection.

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
...

Armor will never be useful.

It is much more useful to move quickly and not get hit at all. So any armor would have to reduce speed by negligible amounts for increased protection. Even then, a rifle round to the chest is going to cause hemorrhaging due to the blunt force.
>>
>>30040890

The Japanese did make some heavier bullet-proof stuff during the warring states era, either outright copying European designs like the peascod and globose breastplates and/or just taking the broad design concepts and making it more "Japanese." But the need for armor died out with the founding of the Tokugawa shogunate and the 400-odd years of peace that followed. This is also when they put away their bows and spears and started having masturbatory fantasies about their swords being able to cut through anything.

Japan had a lot of different armor styles over the centuries, Between the crap they issued to levied peasants and the absurd decorative crap the generals wore there were some practical designs. They just got hamstrung by centuries of peace and isolation.

Basically it's just lemellar I've been curious about this myself. If I took a bunch of ballistic plates cut down to scale size (or ceramic) and just laced them together. It'd probably be heavy as fuck and it wouldn't work without ceramic. But in principal even back into BC times and from like at least macedon to asia that type of armor was used in metal. It doesn't work in metal or someone would of done it already the thickness needed is probably too heavy. Ceramic is too expensive to cut up and it could compromise it if you did so I never tried it. Plus modern plate carriers are pretty good, clothe armor doesn't seem as badass but there are a lot of historic examples of it working and I really like having a plate in there to go prone on. Very comfy to have a shell.

>pointless extra protection
>somehow extra protection can be "pointless"

It covers the same area as normal rifle plates while being more flexible then a thicker plate.

The only problem is the weight and it failed army test due to heat problems. These problems have been claimed to have been made up to simply make the armor fail due to several reasons such as cost of production and the owner being a gigantic faggot etc.
