Shot a 45-70 for the first today I must own one now what does /k/ recommend?
>>
>>30036430
Depends how you wanna define best. 1886 copies are amazing, but they're expensive. Single shots are fun and cheap, but not as satiafying. Marlins are middle of the road price wise, but quality is meh at best.
>>
>>30036471
This depends on the Marlin to be frank. Some old ones are fantastic, some are shot out. Some new ones are good, some are crap.

Get a Ruger #1 and make some fuck off level handloads.

Marlin 1895
>>
>>30036471
Whats the difference between a 1886 or a 1895
>>
>>30036817
1895 is Marlin, 1886 is Winchester/Browning. They're not really comparable except they're both lever actions.

Of course, there is also the Winchester 1895, though I don't know if that was ever made in 45-70.

405win will get the job done.
>>
>>30036895
Of course it was made in 45-70
>>
>>30036895
Correct, they did not. It's a box magazine, smokeless powder rifle (the Winchester 1895 that is). Not something that would befit the 45-70 at the time.
>>
>>30036920
I think it was really that they just wanted their new rifle to be chambered in new calibers, namely 30-40 krag at its release. They likely could have made it in 45-70, but they already made several rifles that did that fine anyways.
>>
>>30036917
I am dumb
>>
>>30036817
1886 was the first rifle using JMB's new locking system.

Winchester 1895 is basically an 1886 with a box mag instead of a tube mag, and a different alloy for the frame. It's somewhat stronger and the frame weighs less if you get a 2nd or 3rd model with the scalloped receiver and less-boxy mag (though both originals and repros had enough different barrel profiles and lengths available total weight is a total grab bag). If you pay less than $3500 for a first model with the slab-side receiver and boxy mag regardless of the condition it's in, keep it for 2 years and throw it on GB for 5 grand.

I don't know enough about the Marlin 1895 to tell you much about it, other than it's side-eject instead of top-eject.
>>
>>30037078
No, you're just wrong. Everyone is once in a while. Even (especially) me.
>>
>>30036920
There are significant numbers of factory-rebarrels from either .38-72 or .40-72 to .45-70, many of which can be supported by a factory letter from the Winchester Archives in Cody, WY. Further, there have been at least 4 custom-order guns that have surfaced in .45-70 that can be supported by the Winchester Archives as leaving the factory as .45-70, but it was not a production caliber.
>One rifle was made in .450 Nitro Express and was gifted to President Theodore Roosevelt
>it was the only lever-action rifle made in .450 Nitro Express
>he actually shot things with it, it currently resides in the Crossroads of the West museum in Cody, WY as part of the Winchester Archives (along with 4 other rifles and 2 shotguns of his)
>>

Really now? Neat.
>>
>>30037258
More info please
>>
>>30036430
Best quality? Miroku. But since I'm not a rich man myself, I'd probably just get a Marlin.
>>
>>30037258
Yup. I go to the museum every summer since I go to the WACA convention in Cody. I've seen the .450 Nitro 1895 first-hand (have actually handled it, under the very overbearing supervision of their arms historian, for research purposes into wood shrinkage).

I've also seen 2 of the 4 known factory .45-70 1895's, and have handled one of them. Julia's sold the first known one in 1997, caused a hell of a stir in the collector community. Rock Island Auction sold the second one 2 years ago for nearly a quarter million. Both companies bring their high-grade collectible Winchesters to the show, both to drum up business and to get more knowing eyes on them (a fuckup on the description of a rifle that may sell for $30,000 will sink the auction, and since they don't specialize in Winchesters their "specialists" do miss stuff with some frequency).

Also, the Winchester custom shop would basically make anything you wanted. Sometimes even if it's a really, really dumb combination (such as the 36" barreled, full-octagonal, full-mag .32-20, double-set-trigger, pre-1898 m1894 Deluxe I've seen that's fully supported with a factory letter)

Those 300gr JHPs are a hell of a drug.

But why limit yourself to 300grs?
>>
>>30036430
A new Marlin 1895's is probably the best low cost option. They have the best aftermarket (say if you want rails like in the pic).

Henry's are much nicer IMO if you want traditional styling and don't mind the tube loading system.

The Miroku Winchesters are quite nice guns but much more expensive.

>>30036503
Ruger single-shots are good guns and you can load them to truly dangerous levels of recoil. Downside is that they are stupid expensive.
>>
>>30037387
You could probably kill a T-Rex with one of those rounds.

Nigga this ain't even the cheapest one on gunbroker. They are only expensive if you get a fancy one. But you are recommending a Henry over a marlin, so your taste is pretty garbo obviously.

I have a 1895 Guide Gun, bought it 12 years ago. I have not been kind to it. It gets wet and muddy annually, use it to pig hunt in the bottom lands which is very swampy in areas.

No complaints. I really like the aftermarket ghost ring, very handy for quick shots in the bush.

side load is easier to do, and does not require to to disassemble the tube mag. Anyone who claims Henrys are good guns was too poor to buy a good new Winchester/uberti, and too stupid to buy a used marlin.

>tfw dream is to get enough of a machine shop to make my own martini henrys in all kinds of big ass

Magnum Opus would be a massive one in .50 BMG or 20mm.
