Alright fuckwads
Time to post your current PT numbers

Are you up to par?
Should you kill yourself?

Find out here!
>>
As of last apft
Age 20
Push up 2 mins: 65
Sit up 2 mins: 77
2 mile run: 13:56
>>
>>30025650

282

94 on run

100 on situps

88 on pushup

Bastard wouldn't count six of my pushups.
>>
age: 30
pushups: 8
situps: never tried
2 mile run: can only run for half a mile before stopping
also get out of breath going up a couple flights of stairs

i want to be a navy seal, how fucked am i?

Navy DEP faggot here

Age 19
500 yard swim: 8:50
Pushups: 70
Situps: 80
Pullups: 11
1.5 mile run: 10:36

Numbers are low/skewed because by the time I'm doing pushups, situps and a run, I've swam almost 1/3 of a mile as fast as possible. It's only 1.5 miles so that's nice.
>>
>>30025759
why dont you swim a little slower then, instead of going all out on the first swim? or does navy put more emphasis on swim times vs the rest of exercise scores?
>>
>>30025704

Low quality.
>>
>>30025783
The guys who are very fast swimmers do that. The reason I test is to keep my contract since I'm in DEP, my swim time is a determining factor on whether or not I get to keep my EOD contract.

The short answer is I need to get better at running and swimming.
>>
>>30025825
i see, so swim time is more important for your MOS, and as long as you beat the minimums on pushups and stuff it doesnt really matter then? is that because you are already in EOD, and they just care about maintenance? or are they more lenient on tryouts too, with the non swim/run scores?

side question, do you get to do scuba stuff? or is it mostly above ground ordnance disposal
>>
>>30025801
its true i want to be a navy seal, i just dont think i can be one. it would probably take at least a year to get into good enough shape and then id be too old
>>
>>30025908

It would take like four months of constant work and then work on the side all through your initial training.
>>

Civ pushing for entry fitness level:

Shuttle run (Beep test): 10.3
Situps (unlimited time): 170
Pushups: 28
Run 2.4km: 11:00 (haven't tested in a while)

Why the fuck does my pushup score consistently suck?

doing 200 pushups a day, either in 1 large block of time or sets of 10 throughout the day, but I haven't managed to break 30, the fuck am I missing here?
>>
See how the ravages of time make all this shit meaningless...oh wait you're too smart to let that happen...so never mind.

1.5 mile run:10 37

>>

Do them in sets of 25, 8 times a day then work out at night.
>>
>>30026073

What the hell are you on about?
>>
>>30026123
So do them through out the day rather in than all in a single training period?

training the situps was so easy compared to the pushups, I just started to failure then did 3 sets close to failure and progress increased exponentially, but with pushups I seem to have stagnated at 25/28
>>
>>30025650
1.5mile run: 28 minutes flat
Pushups in 1 min: 5

I am a woman and as you can see these numbers dont lie, I am just as capable as any man. I can wait to serve combat roles so I can show how much of a asset on the field I can be! #iamwomanhearmequieff!

Start lifting weights and focus on your bench press. Starting Strength or Stronglifts would be good babby's first workout.

>>30026244
Don't just do 10 gorillion push ups if you want to get good at push ups. They are a very inefficient way of building maximal strength. Do bench press primarily and then get sets of push ups on the side.

I've been out but my average was:

100 crunches
17 pull ups
21 minute 3 mile

First class PFT no problem. When the fuck did the corps make ammo cans a thing? Are you talking CFT?
>>
>>30026322
Alternatively you can try weighted push ups. The point being that you need to increase your maximal strength right now. Based on your numbers it is likely the low hanging fruit.
>>
>>30026346
the specific requirement for pushups in our army is:

> i see, so swim time is more important for your MOS,
They do care about pushups and situps, but you're mostly right. For example, if you BTFO the pushups and situps, they won't really care and you won't pass if your swim and run were average.

> and as long as you beat the minimums on pushups and stuff it doesnt really matter then?
It matters, just not as important. They don't even want number; they want 60 or 70 GOOD pushups. Solid form, full extension, no cheating yourself.

> is that because you are already in EOD, and they just care about maintenance?
As I said, I'm in DEP, which is the Navy's "delayed entry program. I ship out in August.

> or are they more lenient on tryouts too, with the non swim/run scores?
On the tryouts, they take your numbers and give them to the recruiting command for Specwar or whatever. Your name and scores get put into a list, and when the monthly draft date comes, those on top with scores above a certain level are chosen. The rest will have to keep competing.

> side question, do you get to do scuba stuff?
Navy Basic EOD graduates are all Scuba and airborne qualified.

> or is it mostly above ground ordnance disposal
Still in DEP

>>
>>30026691
Hmm, closest to me is a pool complex but they definitely charge membership for their gym, I'm stuck in a middle of nowhere shit pot with very little of anything.

I'm already above the entry fitness levels required but it's pretty competitive for entry so I'm trying to boost scores as much as possible in the time I have.

Last pft was something like:
5 pullups, 51, crunches, and i ran like a 26:00 3 mile.
Fags made me do a fucking pft the month before i got out even though i was current for two more months. Looked like the pullup graders were having aneurisms when i did 5 then asked if it was cool to get off the bar. Normally would max crunches, 20 pullups and shitty sub 21 minute 3 mile after drinking.

These are the qualifying standards for the Parachute regiment (UK), it has the highest fitness standards within the army.

A friend of mine is already in the army and said that basically forget the requirements, they expect the following if you are to be even considered for the regiment (otherwise they bust you into some standard infantry regiment).

1.5 mile run immediately after a 1.5 mile jog - sub 9 minutes.
Press ups (2 minutes) 60
Sit ups (2minutes) 80
Pull ups - Atleast 6

Aswell as all those, over a 2 day selection course there also a 2 mile assault course, to be done in 16 minutes, and a 200 meters Jerry can run, but they make you do it more than once depending on how they 'feel' about you, and a 4 mile run ending in a sprint up what they call the Land of Nod, basically a big fucking hill that a lot of people fail on.

And that's just to qualify for training.

Any Brit bros want any advice or questions about the training process let me know.

I do strongman so I know a fair bit about using weird objects to train with, but gym lifts are the bread and butter of any good strength routine. You're hampering your progress significantly by not using barbell exercises

I assuming you waited until you were thirty years old to latch on to that aspiration. If you're in that bad of shape after wanting to be a seal for any ammount of time, then you're lying to yourself about "really wanting it."

If you really do want it though, it's time for a drastic lifestyle change. I know a guy that walked into a serious gym, put their tax return on the desk and said "fix me." Hes in excellent shape now and one of the top trainers at my gym. You can do it if you really want to, anon.

It is indeed, but by the end of your time at depot, you'll be ready, providing you don't jack it or injure yourself.

>>30031719
It's a sub 9:40 providing you can do a static lift of more than 115kg, a static lift is basically a deadlift but instead of a bar it's two handles that you grip which don't move, it instead measures the force that you pull, if you lift weights and are in generally good fitness you should be able to do it, otherwise it's a sub 9:20.

The reason I say sub-9 is because just making the grade on paper doesn't mean shit, if you just scrape it, they'll put you down as high-risk and then work the fuck out of you for your first 5 weeks, they'll either break you when you're already at your most vulnerable, or you'll toughen up fast, either way it's best to avoid it, the lads I know that are already in the reg are doing sub 9's all across the board, even though once you're in, the standard changes from sub 9:30 to sub 10:30.

I'm not in the army yet, I'm very late in the application stage and am basically through all the pre-phase 1 tests, I have a pal thats just passed p company and a couple more that have been in the reg for a few years now, I'm in quality shape desu, and prepared by doing 2 days of heavy compound lifting in gym, then 1 day of body weight only and rowing, and another 2 days worth of running, 1 of which is a best effort 4 miler, the other is interval sprinting, after the running I go to gym and do half hour incline fast-walking on treadmill, and half hour cycling

If you want more in depth training talk let me know

>ocs for marines? you like it?
Yup, the 10 week program. It wasn't exactly a fun walk in the park, but I'm glad I did it.
>what was your pft to apply?
Pretty much crap - I was fast as fuck but couldn't bang out more than 16 pull ups. I think my score was something like 270, which was comparatively low to the class average of about ~285.
>how'd you train for it?
Lots of running, higher rep/lower weight lifting, and pull ups. Great for running, though I've found heavier lifting and weighted pull ups are better for the pull up pft part.
>how was tbs?
Sucked at times, but did some cool shit. I didn't get too into it because I already had my MOS assignment going into it.
>>
>>30034867
you like the marine corps? im waiting for an intel slot in the navy but if i dont get it i think im going to try with the marines, since a recruiter of mine is pushing for subs otherwise.

you only get a land/air/law contract with them though dont you? i guess i'd go for land infantry would be nice but my pft score is poo. im working on my lifting and gotta start running again. hopefully the pool near me opens up so i can do more cardio. youre a JAG then?
>>

>>
>>30034905
Yeah, I like it - the other branches' options for my MOS aren't my style, so I'm glad that I chose the Marines. Navy intel is pretty rad. Yeah, I'm a Judge Advocate, so my experience at TBS would be completely different from yours, should you go ground contract. That said, infantry isn't an especially competitive MOS to get assigned, though the MOS school is pretty brutal to get through.

lets say i wash out of infantry school would i get placed elsewhere or separated? i'd rather serve as an officer in whatever mos than only have a shot at infantry officer or get sep'd if that makes sense. i think i'd be bummed if i was a marine finance officer though

how competitive is OCS selection? oh its only 10 weeks, navy is 12 i think. i got a 3.5 gpa in biochem but my pft is a bit under 200 right now so i dunno if they'd let me get ready then submit my packet once my pft is high enough

what does a JAG do anyway
>>
>>30035067
You get two cracks at IOC - if you fail both, you'd get a different MOS. That said, there are other combat arms MOS's that have easier MOS schools, like arty tanks or aav's. Your PFT isn't going to matter too much for MOS preference - I know guys who ran 250's that went to IOC - but it will matter for just getting selected for OCS. You really gotta up that PFT - start with the pull ups and crunches and once those are high, get fast.

As a judge advocate, most of my work is listening to hilarious drunk marine stories and then negotiating them out of the Corps, or taking them to trial. The rest is advising SgtMaj's and XO's why what they want is blatantly illegal.

Find a place with staff holding CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist), TSAC-F (Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator, or CPT (Certified Personal Trainer) from the NSCA, ACSM, NASM.

Obviously Planet Fitness is garbage. Don't go to a Crossfit Gym. Youll be injured in six months. Other chains like Anytime Fitness and Gold's Gym are adequate for starting out. Ask for a trainer with the aforementioned certifications. Sign up for a longish commitment and make a big down payment. Invest time and money to force yourself to fulfill your commitment. Hopefully after 6ish months of training with a trainer, you can start working alone. Maybe you could even move to a more serious gym.

Before you pony up, have a lengthy talk with the trainer about your goals. If he doesn't listen and take notes, go somewhere else. Ask him what your initial plan would be. If he doesn't relate it to your goals, go somewhere else. Ask for cardio homework. When he gives the homework, ask about form and intensity and mode. If his answers aren't readily available, go somewhere else.

Do your cardio in the gym. Start showering and changing at the gym. If they have a sauna or tanning beds, use them. Spend all the time you need to spend to feel comfortable in the gym.

You'll have to improve your nutrition and sleep habits. This is good. It's the first step towards discipline. Don't worry about keeping up your range time. Everyone in the military gets the same starting line for marksmanship.

Use the money from a weeks worth of ammo to buy a "get selected" type book. Start learning and mentally preparing for the challenges in the upcoming course.

Good luck, /k/omrade. Remember that war was here long before you. It waited for you. The perfect trade waiting for its perfect practitioner.
>>
>>30035134
oh nice
alright i gotta get that shit up then
how often do boards meet?

being a JAG sounds pretty kek, so youre a lawyer? you take the bar and everything?

arty would be fucking neat too. you like the whole corps culture? i feel as if the navy culture and history was neat but i liked the camaraderie in the marines. i also liked that book that fick wrote one bullet away i believe guess that influenced too.
>>
>>30035252
Yeah, my job owns. And yes, I'm a legit attorney, admitted to the bar and everything. I just hate money I guess.

Arty is pretty neat, I'd definitely recommend it. I like most of the culture - the "every Marine a rifleman" gets shit on, but I love how every single Marine officer, even uber-POG's like myself, get 9 months of infantry-centric tactical training between OCS and TBS. There definitely is a greater sense of camaraderie between us than I've experienced in any joint environment I've seen, which I love. You really start to appreciate it in non-work situations where Marines are together.
>>

>>
>>30035320
its a 4 year commitment, pretty much guaranteed O-3 barring retardation? with the 9 months of training it seems like youll only be serving 3 years. i always hear the air wing is kind of poo and the navy wanted 10 years so i wasnt too enthused about it. they got the ball too right? im guessing its a lot more managing than actually doing your job though
>>
>>30035764
It depends on the MOS, but I'd say it's more common than not to be a Capt after 4. My MOS picks up Capt super fast. Everyone's got the ball, and personally, I fucking love the wing. The overall attitude is much more chill overall but that's just me. And spoiler alert - all MOS's are going to be managing when you're an officer, just some are less than others.
>>
>>30035868
are you gonna do your 4 or get out? i think i'd just do a few years then get out, putting off my future so to speak. i just wish i knew what to do

thanks for all the answers dude really helpful in making this choice, gonna be hard to tell my nuke recruiter no though but i dont think i could put up with that shit. and as far as aviation goes i'd love to work with planes but not fly them. like an LSO.

traveling depends on the MOS too i'd suppose, that was another appealing part of the navy for me, see the night sky in the ocean and ports
>>
>>30035173
thanks man, im not in too horrible shape, but im nowhere near commando ready. i kind of exaggerated my shit fitness on the first post. i really appreciate your detailed advice, i had no idea about those certifications and such. im about 6'3", 195lbs, ~19% BF according to digital scale. i go to the gym informally, just benching like 5 sets of 8 reps of 195lbs once every couple of weeks, and doing some squats and curls too. i have basically a dad bod, i guess. can run a mile in about 9 minutes, can run 2 miles straight in about 20 minutes. basically i would die at basic training for military, but im not obese so i hope i can train in time before my age limit kicks in
>>
>>30034576
I'm doing a 115kg deadlift (regular bar variety you see in the gym at the moment) so I should be alright in that regard. I get what you mean about sub 9 min though, I went to have an interview for Sandhurst and it was all about "determination, aggression and best effort". I'm not going for the Para's but the QRH, although I want to be as fit as possible to have an edge. Hey ho, back to the running track anyhow.

I am interested in your workout plan. I'm currently doing Stronglifts 5x5 (three times a week) and running three or four times a week, but I'd like to see how it compares to your's. Would be much appreciated if you posted it so I can compare/make some changes.

Are you going for the parachute regiment as well? Congrats on it so far, best of luck with the rest of it mate.
>>
>>30036128
Still haven't decided, it's going to depend on how much the private sector jobs will pay once I'm near the end of my 4. I love my job, but I can't imagine turning down a job that would pay me 3 times what the Corps will.

There's a lot of sweet wing jobs that people overlook - sounds like you're describing an NFO position, which is pretty fun. I've always thought LAAD (low altitude air defense) was a cool one but that's just me. As for travel, the Marines definitely offers the least attractive options in my opinion.

As in the way your hands are facing. Doesn't matter. You hang with "dead arms" then pull your chin above the bar.

General consensus is "chin ups curl ups" fingertips facing you are harder than fingertips pointing away.

However both are allowed, to each their own.
