I would consider the Minis, and M1A as honorary Garands since they are pretty much the same action and even look quite similar, they just mostly fire different rounds.

I own a Garand, NYS Compliant AR-15, Saiga, and SKS. I think SKS is best overall for utility and combat. Garand is more accurate, but much heavier and ammo is twice as expensive. Saiga trigger is shit (cant convert it in NY), and compliant AR-15 ergonomics and grip is just full potato.

NYC is the only place that really enforces any of it, and even there it's just the bits that bumped forms of illegal possession from a misdemeanor to a felony.
Occasionally outside NYC they'll slap on a high capacity magazine charge at the tail end of the list of charges.

Regularly see people at the range with 30 round mags and non-compliant guns. Only people who ever comaplain are fudds but they usually don't call cops.

Really just depends on how close to a city you live. Anything past 30 minute drive away from a major urban area will probably not even bat an eye with non-compliant weapons, and of course if you have your own land you can fire a gun on you can have whatever you want.
If police do get called it depends on if they are loacal cops or state troopers. Troopers will confiscate it or whatever is non-compliant about it (like mags). Local cops are hit and miss on what they will do.
