There have been many break in's in my neighborhood recently and I need a cheap, sturdy, and reliable gun for home defense. I am no imbecile, as I know how to shoot and that maintenance is a must. There's just so many options, can you help?

Get a mossberg 500 fixed stock with an 18.5" barrel. Load it with some milspec 00 buck (will be in a brown cardboard box)
That will put anything down easily without too much effort. Do not bother with a warning shot or non-lethal, if they are in there and not leaving your DA will be on your side.

Anything you shoot someone with stands a chance of being locked in police evidence where it will get a case number scratched on it and rust.
You could buy a $1500 rifle and it could sit in limbo/be destroyed. Spend the other $1000 on a middle of the road AR15 for fun on weekends.
