Okay /k/ today we will discuss about the general consensus of the Steyr AUG.

Which types are good? which are shit?

I found a Steyr AUG A3 m1 on a site for 1750, would you consider that fair?

discuss pro cons, lets help each other decide if it will be our next gun to get.

AUG owner here. Got mine for $1,631 last year. I don't think it's worth much more than that. My opinion is that it's a 40 year old rifle trying to fit into the tactical world despite making next to no changes to its design. It's reliable, it's reasonably accurate with ammo of less that 62 grains. 1.5 MOA. Would you be better served by an AR-15? Almost definitely.
It's too heavy for what it is, that is the biggest issue in my opinion. The trigger is acceptable for a combat weapon. It can be improved. Do I wish I had gotten a different rifle for my first 5.56? No. It arouses me like you wouldn't believe and I can shoot well with it. I love the thing, aside from it's stupid, overly heavy, solid steel receiver, and would it have killed them to put a brass deflector on it?

Ask me anything.
>>
>>29983118
Sexiest weapon ever.

trigger allegedly sucks (being 3 stage and all)

if I were to take it to a gun fight, I'd swap it out for dead enemies AK immediately.

for personal use? every damn day.
>>

Where did you get it for 1.600?

I got it from a site called lock and loaded but they don't have it anymore. Here it is for close to that price.

In a world of 6 pound ARs, it's heavy.

It is the A3. The A1 isn't worse, just with less features, and incredibly hard to find in the US.

That is the A3 M1, a slightly newer variety with a shorter rail, meaning you are completely reliant on whatever optics you mount, as opposed to my setup which allows for back up irons to be mounted. That green is hot as fuck though.

It's a fun gun, but I have gripes
>1. Non scope models = no use out of the box
Look I don't care if they aren't great, but sights should always be on a gun. No gun should come out of the box unable to shoot
>2. Lame ass charging handle
It's like $5 fix, but why won't Steyr do it right from the factory I mean this is a 1.5k+ gun
>3. Only one source of parts
While it's great to have parts, PJ is pretty pricey.

All that being said they are fun guns and I would say if you got the dosh throw down.

It's frustrating to me that you have to drop $400 extra on a gun to use it out of the box. Though I do love the original scope. I'm seriously considering dropping 400 on one for mine.
>>
Correct me if I'm wrong...

The model designated SA is the NATO model that uses standard AR mags, Yes?

It doesn't have a bolt release. Does it still have last-round-bolt-hold-open, just with no easy release, or does it go closed bolt on an empty mag?
>>
>>29983519
SA NATO is the one that ships with the NATO stock that takes AR15 mags. I don't know if it has last round bolt hold open.

>1. Non scope models = no use out of the box
Look I don't care if they aren't great, but sights should always be on a gun. No gun should come out of the box unable to shoot

Would you rather have them price the gun up an extra 100 bucks or for a pair of flip up sights when most people will either remove them or replace them with the brand they like or put on a reddot/scope? Almost every single AR-15 is this way, if you wanted it to shoot out of the box you should have got the scoped model.

>2. Lame ass charging handle
It's like $5 fix, but why won't Steyr do it right from the factory I mean this is a 1.5k+ gun

Again its a cost cutting option, some might like the factory option and be fine with it, and it can always been replaced with an after market version. Its like selling an ar with expensive ass furniture if someones just going to take it off and replace it with what they want, that's why most will sell the gun with milsurp furniture that's dirt cheap.

Look man I'd rather the sights be built into the gun. The Tavor may have shit standard sights, but at least they're there. And the charging handle is garbage, absolute garbage and that's well known. It's a classic example of a manufacturer not fixing a serious defect. I love my AUG but Steyr needs to get their shit together.

Just spend the extra money for the factory scope. It's held on with 3 hex bolts so you could always just remove it and order the small rail section from steyr and bolt that on instead if you want different optics. Pic is my raifus.
>>
>>29983765
I don't really see the point of a 1.5 fixed zoom optic when you can have virtually anything else with the railed section. Besides aesthetics I guess but the railed factory optics look ridiculous in my opinion.

>>29983787
The one on my AUG is a 3x scope. The only thing I don't like about it is that the scope built into the AUG A1 had an iron sight on top of it, but for the A3M1 they put a rail on the top. The rail is cut so there's a trench down the middle and they put white sight dots on the rearmost slot as a sort of gutter sight, but the elevation dial for the scope sticks up right in the middle of it so there's no front post. It's ok I guess if you're shooting at something within 15-20 yards but other than that it's kind of useless.

The white thing in the picture is the lens cap that came on it from the factory
>>
>>29984078
Was about to say, no front post kind of makes those sights redundant, but, having them on there is better than not especially if you need a quick "snap shot" as it were in close range.

They're so high above the bore axis that I doubt they'd be useful even for that. You'd probably be better off just eyeballing it watching where your shots hit and walking them onto the target if they're off. That or just use the scope with both eyes open.

If you want to buy a new assault rifle (semi-autp), you have to hand in one assault rifle for destruction.

With the right mods and parts you can get the trigger down to a crisp 4lb, which makes it stupidly fun.

My jealousy is too real.

Have you found use for that quick change barrel?

I don't see a way the barrel could get hot enough running 30rd magazines to warrant that feature.. if it was belt or drum fed maybe...
>>
>>29984331
They make 45 round mags, as seen in my post at the start of the thread. Outside of heat issues it makes it about five or six inches shorter, 4 more with a 20" barrel. Good for portability in a bag or something. I plan on having both a 16" barrel with a suppressor and a 20" without, and be able to switch them out for shits and giggles.

With light (less than 62 grain) ammo, it gets about 1.5 to 2 MOA. This means 4.5-6" groups at 300 meters. Not ideal, but not terrible. This combined with the difficulty of mounting a bipod, make it somewhat unsuitable for a marksmans role. Additionally I believe a marksmans rifle should be in .308/7.62x51

I thonk it fits the SPR role decently well though, and 5.56 out of a 20" is pretty vicious. Pushing 3000 fps with 55 grain ammo.

The quick change barrels are so that you can easily convert it from an assault rifle to a carbine, to an LMG, to an SMG(uses a magwell adapter and TMP mags). Steyr does classify the AUG as a weapon system afterall.

Australians refused to serve with the A1 Steyr so they created the AUSTEYR variant.

Pretty sure he took down all his videos, a shame, he has an amazing collection if I recall.

>>29984897
Yeah, I think what was going on was people would buy old as shit weapons that they could get dirt cheap for like $150 and they'd hand those over and then import something like an AR-15, sell it for profit here and buy another cheap shit gun, hand it over and import a new one.

then of course you run out of shitty cheap guns and have to start handing in better shit, that's why it was good when the NZ Army dumped all their SLRs on the market, could buy em up cheap and people just collected a lot of them un-fired.

sadly hard to find now.
