Sten thread?
What do you guys think of it?
>>
>>29950963
It's bretty good, but the Sterling was superior overall.
>>
>>29950963
It was a good idea overall.
>>
>>29950963
It did what it was supposed to just fine, that being be a cheap, easy to make and distribute firearm. That being said by today's standards it would be pretty shitty.
>>
I'm looking for a Web site that has all the parts to build one but I'm having no luck
>>
>>29951047
hello this is the atf would you like to tell me where these sites are
>>
>>29951047
there are much better kits to build
>>
>>29951047

Ten years ago it wasn't hard at all to find kits, barrels, and original internal diameter tubes with bonded on templates. I know a Class 2 / Type 7 SOT who welded up a post sample by doing just that.

But now most online distributors have changed their policies and won't sell an OD tube to anyone who doesn't have a demo letter. I imagine they started getting hounded by the feds after a while. There was an unspoken understanding that most of the people buying kits and tubes were welding them up in their garages with no papers.

Come to think of it, there was a brief period of around 2010-2013 where several different groups were offering shit like 80% full auto backplates for Glocks, 80% lightning links, and shit like that online. I haven't seen any of that stuff in ages. I guess the ATF/FBI/both must have started twisting legs.
>>
I think /k/ thinks they're way easier to build from scrap steel than they really are
>>
>>29951402
OD means outer diameter, not original

>can be made from pipes and by grinding pieces of steel
>no gun manufacture wants to make a decent quality Sten for around 300 USD.

Why?

Why won't they make a cheap STEN clone that only fires in semi auto?
>>
>>29951568
see>>29951556

It's not that easy
The stock is a tube, the bolt has to be machined, the parts have to be hardened, the barrel has to be rifled, the parts have to be machined

>inb4 grind it

never seen a grinder that can do the rear cap before
>>
>>29951578
I read that handbook to make the pipe Sten. Is it not accurate?

Anyways, it's still an incredibly simple gun so I have no idea why there's no market for one.
>>
>>29951586
Even if you did make a sten from a grinder and scrap steel, you'd still need a machined bolt face for a firing pin

And a barrel

And everything would wear out in 200 rounds

The reason there's no market is no one wants a shitty, uncomfortable unwieldy subgun that costs $500

The machine and fab time alone would drive costs too high
>>
>>29951568
Open bolt semi autos are not legal for new production in the US.
>>
>>29951556
It would be hard to build a sten from scratch yes. But it's super duper easy to reassemble a demilled sten parts kit.

Fun historical piece.
Just like Thompson.
Oh, wait. Thompson actually display workmanship in their firearms.
So Sten is basically a history piece minors aesthetic.

Built one this week. Finished it today.
>>
>>29951972
your welds are trash brah
>>
>>29952017
The sten is shit. Having pretty welds wont make it suddenly not a sten.

But it actually fires pretty good and building one in as little time as possible using a bare minimum of tools, time, matierials, and effort was entertaining.

People miss the point of these things. Its not like milling out a 1911 or an AR where the end goal is to have something nice.

The end goal in a sten build is to have a sten, a gun famous for being scraped together in basements and back alleys.

>Having pretty welds wont make it suddenly not a sten.

true, but at least try
>>
>>29952063
Actually, you are correct.

I said "finished" in that i can fire it reliably.

Still gonna do some sanding and grinding cuz, protip, most welds look like shit until you do that.

Then im gonna give it a coat of only the finest spraypaint on the market and fire it whenever my AR or AK gets boring.
>>
What is a Sten mk2 worth? I have one in pretty good condition, the paint is a bit off but it's still functioning.
>>
>>29951556
if you eliminate the trigger group (like choosing to simply make a notch to lock the charging handle in rear position & simply releasing it to fire) and don't care about the thing blowing up in the shooter's face it's essentially a tube, magazine, barrel, recoil spring, bolt and a stock.

it is a wicked piece of vicious tin!
Call it a gun? Don't make me grin.
it's just a bloated piece of pipe.
it couldn't hit a hunk of tripe.
But when its with me in the night,
I'll tell you pal, its just alright!

Each day I wipe it free of dirt.
its dratted corners tear my shirt.
I curse at it and call it names,
its much more trouble than my dames.
But boy, do I love to hear it yammer
When its spitting lead in a business manner.

it is a conceited pile of salvage junk.
I think this prowess talk is bunk.
Yet if I want a wall of lead
Thrown at some Jerry's head
It is to that shitty gun I raise my hat;
You're a damn good pal...
You silly gat!

>Idiots

The point of a sten is not to be the best gun ever made. It'll always be cobbled together, uncomfortable to use, and all around unpleasant to use.

That is the charm of it. If you are too autist to see the appeal of a hardscrabble gun made in a time of need, then I can't help you. Probably no one can.

If you want quality machining and construction from a piece of British history, get pic related.

But sometimes, you want a wicked piece of tin.

I saw your thread last night. Very nice. Do you have any info on the bolt? Are tube 9mms fine left as open bolt semi autos? Conversion to striker fired? I picked up an sa kommando ldp kit which isnt a sten I know, but im not sure if I should just leave it open bolt or convert it to striker fired.
>>
>>29954875
If you're in the US open bolt semi is illegal, from the looks of the Idp gun striker fired similar to l a semi vz26 or Uzi should work
>>
>>29954905
Hmm. I read it was open bolt. But it could be wrong. Its literally derived from the vz26 and uzi.
>>
>>29950963
I shot an original full auto STEN: wasn't bad.
>>
>>29954924
Then that style closed bolt striker conversion should work

Here's a video I made on my semi vz, somewhere it shows the bolt
https://youtu.be/LhHYD4F7xxo
>>
>>29954875
Gotta convert to closed bolt and it cant have a fixed firing pin.

Honestly it woulda been easier to illegally build it as a machinegun than have to convert it.

Took HOURS to get it to stop jamming and begin shooting right. Its frustrating when you know that in literally 30 minutes you could have just used the original bolt design and have a working machinegun but instead you are stuck fucking with this big mess of recoil and hammer springs tryin to just get it to fire right in a legal manner.

That'd be duracoat in a can

and a machined bolt face and extractor

Granted an extractor isn't necessary, but its still nice if a round doesn't go off
>>
>>29951568
They do. That's what I've been looking at. Indianapolis ordinance .com has semi auto configurations it's just a pain because they don't have all the parts and the ones they do have are expensive.
