Honest questions: Purpose, budget, location?

Purpose is the most important. Combat sport armour is more expensive than larp, costume or reenacting armour.

Budget is self explanitory, but hinges on the purpose. $200 of combat sport grad armour is not as fancy as $200 of costume armour, but the function and quality is different.

Location helps me link you to a dealer or crafter that wont incur over seas shipping.

Also, get a gambeson.

Spend the same or less amount of money and get metal instead.

Seriously, its a waste of leather, and will be more expensive than metal my miles.

http://kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=AH6112

18g steel will be fine for larp, and it actually looks like a helmet.

>>29949311
>The helm is West Coast Armory

Oh. Oh you poor dear. You most likely will never see that helmet. Brand is currently under several lawsuits for undelivered goods.

>>29949327
>DFW Texas area if that matters
Yes. Yes it matters. You're in one of the shittiest groups of the shittiest chunks of the map, no even counting how much Texas sucks in the first place outside of the SCA.

I am honestly sorry for you, and wish I could invite you to almost anywhere else to meet people who actually care about history, wanna have fun, and are not alpha-geeks in uncovered sporting equipment.

Keep in mind, your typical historic recreation group has about 1 out of 10 insufferable douchebags. The SCA is the largest in the group in the world, so now that 100 douchebags out of 1000 members.

Thankfully, they are easy to avoid. Don't like your local group? Go play with the next group over.

Care to storytime? I love hearing about how much my multistate group is awesome in comparison.

Can't do metal. Lightest touch system, head shots legal. We've learned that mail is the only metal armor you can reliably feel hits though.

...Plus, once we have on one hand, my leather worker of a knight can figure out how to make some of the trickier parts.
>>
>>29949908
Ok thats retarded kinds of retarded. You have the only advice I can give. You'll spend more making it from leather than the cost of a metal helm.

I hate to suggest it... But what about polyurethane? https://www.etsy.com/listing/238617352/larp-armour-thracian-helmet?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=larp%20helmet&ref=sr_gallery_21
>>
>>29949949
>You'll spend more making it from leather than the cost of a metal helm.

I'm aware. Rigid metal is, however, currently banned, and needs approval on event by event basis.

Poly may be worth considering, especially if I can't find a leatherworker to do it for less than the cost of a good rifle.

I'm also considering trying to to bicolline this year, and seeing if I can successfully network and find a canuck craftsman to do it.

you would be surprised, when i first got into blacksmithing and armour smithing i didn't realize just how many of us there are in my local city.
>>

Firstly: Blacksmiths don't make armour. Armourers make armour. Armouring is 99% coldwork.

There are hundreds of professional armourers making reproduction armour, and sports combat armour. It all depends on what you're looking for.

My stuff is all made by Allen Bauldree of AB Hammer armoury, located in Kentucky. I will fight anyone who argues that he's not one of the top 10 in the US. He is also my ACL sponsor. Here is another helm by him.

And 1000 years later, roman manica. Later, they would start using maille shirts with sleeves.

Simple leather and metal bracers were not unheard of, but nothing like splinted defenses.
