Fuck imagine being in that thing as its going down.

The missile goes so fast I doubt they had time to react with flares.

When the choppers radar picks up a missile coming in does it automatically dump flares or does the pilot have to do that?

Fuck man.

IDK, I don't really know shit about MANPADS
>>
>>29942641
Looks like an Igla-1 possibly E variant
>>
So do these lock on via radar to guide the missile in the right direction before its heat seeker sniffs out the chopper?

>>29942688
Also, these questions. How does the chopper pick up the incoming missile(s)? Always by radar? Does the radar always pick up an incoming missile?

Is the radar or other sensors picking up an incoming missile cause for it to automatically dump countermeasures like flares?

I wonder in the case that the radar did spot the missile, how long did the crew have to react? One second? Two?

If they pulled some kind of evasive maneuver without countermeasures would that be enough to dodge the missile? Or is its tracking/agility/sensor too good? Or do these missiles have proximity fuses?

So many questions.
>>
>>29942641
Pretty sure it's a Mangusta.

It's not a Viper, Turks don't fly Vipers. It could be a Super Cobra, but I don't see skis on it.

>The insurgents in Iraq had an abundant supply of Soviet supplied
SA-7 SAMs and Chinese clones, and there are claims that newer
Russian SA-16 and SA-18s may have been used. These have
generally proven less than effective since much of the coalition
helicopter fleet was equipped with infrared exhaust suppressors,
active infrared jammers and flare dispensers. Many larger
helicopters were also equipped with missile approach warning
systems to cue countermeasures deployment. The most prominent
kills achieved by MANPADS were transport aircraft, spurring the
deployment of infrared jammers across coalition fleets.
While MANPADS have not produced the losses many anticipated,
mostly due to good pre-emptive installation of countermeasures,
losses due to larger calibre gunfire and rocket propelled grenades,
from the RPG-7 upward, have remained a consideration. Tactics
for the evasion of MANPADS involve low flying, which exposes
helicopters to gunfire and RPG fire. Recent statistics in the media
suggest that 40 per cent of US helicopter losses are due to RPGs
and 20 per cent due to gunfire.

Answers some of my questions.

I wonder why 'infrared exhaust suppressors,
active infrared jammers, flare dispensers and missile approach warning systems to cue countermeasures deployment' aren't the standard in all military helicopters in every western military?

Size/Power/Processing power/Cost? Or are they not effective enough? The article suggests they worked well against the older gen missiles.

Detecting an passively guided missile launch is a real bitch. Basically you have sensors watching for the IR or UV flash of the rocket motor. It is pretty easy to miss.

Active infrared jammers (the disco balls on US helos) are really only effective against older missiles that use spinning-slot guidance. Flares and some types of smoke work against newer missiles, but they are harder to detect so you don't know to use them.

>>
>>29943119
Nope. Radars tend to be big, expensive, and eat a lot of electricity. Most currently fielded man-portable systems are pure IR (some also use UV actually to help with counter-countermeasures), with a few command-guidance systems sprinkled in.

The best way to avoid MANPADS is to fly at really low altitude like in this video.

Yeah but then you become vulnerable to gunfire and Somali-tier RPG spam

Russians haven't lost too many helos in Syria, even though every sheepherder in a 5km radius probably fires at them.

Then again maybe they just use them well.
>>
>>29943309
Yeah thats true. It seems kinda random though, Some missions you could end up losing 4 helicopters like for America in 1993, and others you lose none.

Granted, the environment is incredibly incredibly different.

bummer.

I've always thought that Russia or China should build something IR-guided that can shoot down higher flying tactical bombers, and provide it to people around the world who are getting bombed by Western planes or drones that are outside the reach of MANPADS.
Preferably, the system should be still small enough to be at least mounted on technicals and smaller trucks (which will also help it to get smuggled across borders).

Because you cant just sell the Kurds some based Buks.

I Don't know, at that altitude with the short missile travel time I doubt a MAW could do much of anything to disperse active countermeasures.
>>
>>29942688
>>29942766
Missiles are usually guided using either infrared (heat) or radar.

If it's radar guided, the missile is guided by a separate radar unit that is communicating with the missile. Your aircraft will detect the radar signature coming from the missile site before the missile is fired and will warn you that you are being painted. Once the missile is fired then you will receive a visual SAM warning and an aural alarm.
The aircraft will also detect radar guided AA guns.

Infrared missiles used to be difficult to detect in the early years. But aircraft now have infrared sensors designed to pick up the heat coming from the rocket motor of a missile.

The counter measures have automatic/manual/off modes. If turned on to automatic, it will pump flares/chaff by itself when a threat is detected.

There was an incident a while back where a harrier buzzed a US base in Afghanistan during some sort of celebration. And the aircraft picked up the heat from a bonfire on the base, and because the counter measure mode was on auto, the aircraft dumped flares all over the base, causing several fires.
