I got this Remington 870 Wingmaster 12ga for free today, and it has some surface rust on the receiver and barrel that I need to clean off. I've never had to clean rust off a gun before because I've never let my firearms get rusty in the first place, so I'm not sure how to do it properly without damaging the finish. I watched a video on YouTube by Bownells and it suggested just using Hoppes No. 9 solvent on a rag and wiping it off, however the rust on my gun looks more significant than the little bit that was shown in the video.

What cleaner do you anons recommend for cleaning this amount of rust off, and do you use a normal gun rag or is something like steel wool required?

Pic related and the ones below are the shotgun and the rust.

>semi-related
I noticed during disassembly that there was no spring in the magazine tube. Do any anons own one of these and know if it's missing or does it just not have a spring?

Back side of the receiver, this is the most rust-heavy area.

CLP
It'll give you cancer but it'll eat rust and lube your gun. I'd use a varsol bath for that much rust though

And lastly magazine tube. Also in pic related is the bolt assembly, which is actually pretty clean considering the rest of the gun.
>>
>>29938470
Bought an 870 express myself, large patches of surface rust right on the inside of the magazine, I've got all the stuff to clean it and even put blue on top, not sure if I need to though
>>
>>29938470

000/0000 steel wool, and "Kroil.".

Diesel or Kerosene will also kind of work if you are too fucking broke to afford Kroil.
>>
>>29938569
Does yours have a spring inside the magazine tube? Not sure if mine is missing because all the other internals were present and working when I took this one apart.
>>
>>29938470
>>29938504
Hoppe's no.9 does the trick too. Rust is the only thing I'll use it for.
>>
>>29938573
That stuff sounds like it'd be great, but I'd prefer something I could get in a store if possible. Looking around and it doesn't look like anywhere near me carries it.

>>29938633
Would you recommend using steel wool like >>29938573 said or just a gun rag?
>>
>>29938597
there should be 3 parts in the magtube a spring a follower and a piece that keeps it from shooting out the front when you remove the mag cap
theres 2 different types depending on the age
>>
>>29938569
Yeah, but I replaced it with an extension, so now I have a spare spring and chinsey plastic follower; I can't use the retainer either since the express has dimples that hold it in and need boring out to use mag extensions

I bought mine in an lgs so my buddy showed me how to fingerfuck everything and check functions
>>

Whoops, meant to reply to you not myself
>>
>>29938719
>>29938759
Got it, thanks. I just disassembled it again and it turns out the spring and follower are in the tube. The stopper piece at the end is solid so I couldn't see if anything was in the tube itself and assumed there was nothing when nothing popped out when I first removed the cap.

Looks like everything is present and in working order, I just didn't know what I was looking for there.
>>
>>29938470
I feel like if you removed the rust with some Hoppes 9 or CLP and then cerakoted it like gray, it would look fucking sweet
>>
>>29938816
check the spring for damage if theres any rust replace it
>>
>>29938667

Steel wool. Fine.

Any light oil will work with the steel wool, just that Kroil works -especially-well.

I mean if you are made of money you could use "Mouse Milk" or similar. But Kroil runs ~ 25.00 for a 16 oz can.

OP here. I went and got come CLP and 0000 steel wool like the anons above recommended and it seems to be working for the most part. As you can see in pic related, the actual brown rust is gone however the marks are still present. It doesn't look like actual pitting because the spots are raised rather than indented like the metal corroded, so I'm not sure if they'll come out or not.

Can any anon tell if these can be buffed out or not? And if so, do I just keep scrubbing it or should I let the CLP soak on it for a bit?
>>
>>29940269
its not going to come off
youve removed the surface rust and if you oil it can prevent it from deteriorating further but that pitting is permanent
whats done is done
>>
That's fucked. You're gonna have to get it entirely refinished..

And if there's that much rust through the bluing on the receiver, I don't want to know what the bare steel on the internals looks like

Also, is it rifled??
>>
>>29940736
That's unfortunate, but thanks. It doesn't seem severe at all, no noticeable difference in thickness of the metal so I don't think it'll affect performance at all.

Either way it was free, so I guess it doesn't matter much.

>>29940760
The internals are actually completely fine, no issues at all, only had any rust on the outside. And no, it's smooth bore.

Heres a shit quality pic. When I got this ruger (for $100) it was in worse shape than your remington.
>>
>>29940994
>>29941011
I might do that. Did you use the shake and spray kit?
>>
OP again, semi related: I've noticed two spots of significant pitting inside the barrel however they are pretty small and I think it'd still be safe to shoot. Either way I was looking online for possible replacement barrels but I can't find the same specs as the one on there now.

It's 12ga, 20in, 2 3/4in shell, unrifled with deer irons on it. Online the closest thing I can find is exactly the same except 3in shells and all the sites say to only use those with Magnum receivers (serial ending in M) which mine is not (ends in V). Anyone know where I can find an identical replacement? I'm not sure if this is an old model version or what.
>>
>>29941023
No, I have a proper HVLP gun, but the shake and spray kit is pretty well reviewed.
>>29941095
Its fine, relax
>>
>>29941165
Yeah I'm pretty sure it's perfectly safe to fire; I've seen posts on here of old milsurp with far worse than I can see on mine and those were safe to shoot as well.

Turns out that apparently this isn't a standard barrel, it's a "Special Purpose" deer slug barrel, which are like $300 for a replacement, so fugg that because I won't be hunting with this.
>>
>>29938772
>wear mask
Ahahahaha no one wears mask in the mil and only like a tenth wear gloves. Like I said though, it'll give you cancer.
>>
>>29940782
If it's not pitting, then let it soak in CLP. If it can be removed it will be.
>>
>>29941238
It's definitely pitting, I've snaked it through a few times now and everything else is clean but those two indented spots remain. In good news though, pretty much everything else looks great after CLPing the shit out of it.
>>
>>29941296
CLP also works to lube and protect. Shit's fantastic. We literally dump bottle of it into our machine guns on the range. My gunner mixes it 50/50 with 80w90 gear oil to thicken it up for the machine guns for when they get hot. Shit works wonders.
>>
OP here, just finished scrubbing everything down inside and out and it looks significantly better than it did when I started. Seems like it'll do just fine for a free gun.

Thanks for all the advice anons
>>
>>29941393
Good to hear. What do you plan to use it for?
>>
>>29941400
Not sure really. Considering it's a slug gun, the only thing I can think of would be for hog hunting because I don't hunt deer with shotguns.
>>
>>29941393
Show pic fag
>>
Why are u guys comparing CLP to a fucking nerve gas
>>
>>29941425
Just buy a smoothbore barrel for it. Keep the slug. Shotgat barrels are dirt cheap.
>>
>>29941442
Taking them now.
>>29941447
It is a smoothbore. Rem's spec details have it listed as a deer slug gun (I'm assuming specifically for use with 2 3/4" rifled slugs)
>>
>OP got a free gun.
Nice, had the same thing happen to me with a Mauser.

And lastly a pic of open bolt. Internals very clean, no rust or damage aside from the small pitting spots in the barrel I mentioned above. Trigger assembly looks great.

Whole thing coated with a light covering of CLP.
>>
You done good, OP.
Now go buy her some food for your next range day.
>>
>>29941512
How do you like the smell of CLP?
It holds a special place in my heart.
>>
>>29941514
Never cleaned rust like this before so thanks to all the anons who provided directions
>>29941517
It's great. Seeing how well it cleans plus the smell has definitely just made it my go to cleaner.
CLP > Hoppes for me now
>>
>>29940994
What's that M14 lookalike gun?
>>
>>29941703
Its a Winchester pellet rifle, highly recommend.
>>
Another good solution to remove rust on things that are not blued is something called 'A Must For Rust.'
Smells like ass but it is water based and does the job shockingly well.
Then you spread your oil of choice on the thing.
