What is the largest caliber firearm you've ever heard without hearing protection for any reason?
Speaking in terms of handguns, it was a 6 inch Taurus in .357
for long guns, it was an AR in .308 with a 16 inch barrel. Both of them were accidents. Both of them hurt.
>>
>>29913712
12 gauge pump. Had to put down a coyote that was attacking my 6 month old puppy.
>>
Handgun: .45 ACP, although 7.62 tokarev is worse to hear without earpro

Rifle: uhhh, either 7.62x54, 8mm Mauser, or .30-06, I can't really remember what's the loudest

In general, it sucks but it won't make your ears bleed and you won't have permanent ringing in your ears like some of the pussies on here like to claim.
>>
>>29913826
Yeah, I've heard quite a few gunshots in my life without hearing protection and I only have a slight ringing in my ears that I can only notice when I'm in total silence.
On top of it, I actually have very sensitive hearing.
>>
Twelve gauge, and it was EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE for 3 days. Not deafening, but really frustrating. Can definitely say I had a little hearing loss after that though.

Shot my cetme .308 without hearing protection (my dumb ass forgot i took them off). My ears rang for a solid hour after that.

Used to bird hunt without ear protection. Duck and dive mainly. It wasn't too bad. The worst was shooting my uncle's 30-06 in a shooting house with no ear pro. EEEEEE for at least a couple hours, then got a headache and really sleepy.

I don't HAVE to sleep with a fan on but it does help. The only time I really notice it is when it's dead silent or when I'm pretty dehydrated.

Pistol - 9mm, but .22 seemed louder for some reason. Pulled my concealed and shot and missed at a random dog that came and fucked with my dog when we were walking.

9mm. I was camping with friends and while we were hiking around a bit one of my friends thought it would be fun to pull out his pistol and shoot into some berm while we weren't expecting him to. Sure enough we were all pissed as hell with him because none of us had earpro on and it was loud. He's a massive faggot and isn't really in my circle of friends anymore because he was constantly "that guy" in everything we did.

The largest handgun caliber that I've shot without earpro is .22lr through my Ruger Mk II when hunting grouse.

>Rifle
.22lr, I've never shot my CZ 452 Ultra Lux with earpro because it has a 28" barrel and with cheap bulk ammo it's quieter than my .177 air gun.

You know, this makes me wonder- how did soldiers from past wars get by?

WW1, WW1, Vietnam/Korea, etc... if one shot like this is enough for some minor permanent tinnitus or hearing loss, shouldn't these guys by logic be fully deaf already? Yet that's not the case...what gives?
>>
>>29917713
How bad
>>
A 155 mm howitzer. I'm the RTO and need my ears open for the radio. It's common practice at this point and I'm pretty sure I have tinnitus and I'm not even 21 yet
>>
>>29919968
Order an electronic earpro and some batteries for the love of fuck.
>>
>>29918420
You have to hear it consistently for long periods of time before anything becomes permanent. Like a long sucession of machinegun fire. That will leave permanent damage. A shot every now and then a good distance away; it hurts but you'll be alright.
>>
>>29918420
Uhhh, what are you talking about? Nearly all the WW2 generation were almost deaf. My grandfather could never hear anything.
>>
>>29919991
it only takes 120 db to cause instant damage. guns can be from 150 db and up. a .300 Winchester magnum is 190 db(although at the muzzle). decibel levels are logarithmic, so a magnum at the muzzle is 10 million times louder than what is required for permanent instant damage. of course no one has magnums fired off an inch from their ear, but it shows how easy it is to cause permanent hearing loss.
>>
>>29913712

A 12 Gauge, I don't know what shotgun specifically but it was a pump action.

1994, I was two years old. Uncle came home drunk and played with his shotguns. Fired a shot through the ceiling of our apartment (and there was a floor above us, though it was vacant at the time.)

He had his shotguns placed in the care of my other uncle and I still have tinnitus. It comes and goes throughout the day.
>>
The loudest firearm wound be a glock 19 for me. that short barrel really makes a difference. my AR and 12 gauge are quieter.
>>
All these posts are making me think about if I ever had to shoot without ear protection. Does anybody have electronic earbuds? Do they work well? It seems like they'd be nice to just have on ya for emergencies.

They had hearing problems from the wars they were in yet they weren't bunch of giant pussies like our generation.

Also the old folks didn't listen to mega bass based music all day everyday pumping those sound waves directly to their eardrums with headphones and worse yet earplug headphones.

I actually sorta had the same.
When I was really young, I had shit tons of ear infections and I think they had to perforate my eardrums or something to drain fluid numerous times.
That might actually be what MY (slight) tinnitus is from, as opposed to guns, since I actually remember the ringing in silence from when I was way young too, before I was exposed to a gun.

.22 mag for rifles

357 mag for handguns.

Both were the same buddy of mine. No range ettiquite at all. He makes fun of me all the time for wearing ear pro. Have no idea how he does it. Refuses to believe that he will get hearing damage even though i have to yell everything at him the whole drive back from the range.

Only time he ever wore it btw was after he shot my svt40. I told him it was loud but i guess he thought it was just like a 308 not knowing about muzzle breaks and all.

Is it odd that I've never used hearing protection? Everything from a .22LR to .300 Win Mag hunting rifle, plus 120 mm when I was in the Army, never wore any form of hearing protection and dont have really any hearing loss.

I never wear hearing protection when shooting my 12 gauge.. Shotguns are not that loud.

My AR is like twice as loud
>>
>>29932360
I think it might be because in my experience, shotguns have much deeper booms to them as opposed to high cracks.
>>
>>29932393
Yeah, it's low pressure. I'm pretty sure a .22 has something like three times the chamber pressure of a 12 gauge. something to do with the looser fit of shot/a slug compared to a tight bullet being pushed through a rifled barrel

You don't get hearing damage instantly Faggot, it's collective from longer periods of extreme noise. 5 gunshots will not permanently damage your ears, but 100 or 200 will.

I have mild tinnitus from listening to loud music, which doesn't happen overnight. My buddy and I forgot ear pro once, so I took a chance and used old gross ear plugs on the ground after I cleaned then with water. He used little paper balls that did nothing.

We shoot maybe 150 rounds of 7.62x39 and 40 .270's. My ears are fine, he tells me "dude. My fucking ears hurt and I can't hear anything very well." Complained about ringing for days after.

The m2 was louder but does a really good job of directing the sound away from the shooter IMO. Firing an M4 without earpro is worse. Funny how those things work.

A .44 deagle at the range.

I pulled my ear plugs out jsut to hear it in its full glory.

It actually had a really nice lasting bass to it, like the sweet aftertaste of a shot of Johnny Walker black label, or luxury multi ply toilet paper.

Compared to the tinny slightly higher pitched reports of 9mms or AR15s. The sounds from these guns can be described as similar to Johnny Walker red label, with its shitty smokey aftertaste and watery texture, or the extra cheap nearly smooth toiletpaper you see in fast food restaurants

Once I put 20 rounds of 7 62x39 with a brake downrange without earpro on a cold winter day. The first shot I didn't even hear; I just felt pressure in my ears. Each shot started to hurt after 5. By 10 or 15 I was sick of it. When I went to bed that night I dreamed that my left eardrum was melting on my pillow. I heard the last shot for about 2 weeks. The ringing lasted a couple months. They say hearing damage is permenant so I must just be used to it or it will go when I'm 70 rather than 80 due to accumulated damage. Idk.

I got to try out the 308 M14 which was extremely fun to shoot with standard nato rounds and got to shoot my first shotgun which didn't hurt at all and other fun guns.

The moment I got to shoot the 22lr S&W revolver it was okay but not as fun as the henry lever action 22lr but anyway.
