Why is the 30-06 Springfield still ridiculously popular? It's been over a hundred years yet the cartridge sells almost as well as the 308 Win.

At best the 30 06 is an extremely long cartridge that delivers substantially less energy than the Magnum calibers. A long bolt is required to fire a 30 06. For its size, the 3006 seems pretty inefficient.

When will the old 06 lose its popularity?
>>
Prolly when the servicemen who trained with M1 Garands do.

You know how many nazis have been killed with 30-06? Pretty sure that shit is immortal now.
>>
>>29891651
Because everyone and their: brother, father, son, mother, dog, etc. has an old .30-06 that's been passed down to them by their: brother, father, son, mother, dog, etc.

Why is the 5.56 still popular? It's been over 50 years yet it still sells as well as the 22lr.

At best, the 5.56 is an overglorified 22. that deliver substantially less enegery than a 7.62. For the price, it's pretty inefficient.
>>

It's 7.62x63mm, is the basis from old american milsurp, is the garand's main round (outside of some .308/7.62x51 conversions), and can be loaded hot as fuck.

It'll lose popularity whenever we develop lazer weapons. It's like asking when 9mm will be abandoned.
>>
Why is the 9mm Parabellum still ridiculously popular? It's been over a hundred years yet the cartridge sells almost as well as the .45. ACP
>>
>This cartridge is so old, why do we still have it?

Inertia, you stupid shit.

Not everybody is a goddamn munchkin that must have the most perfectest and up to date operating gear possible for whatever the hell it is they're trying to do.

Factories are still tooled to produce it and to produce guns that fire it. There's too much money still to be had selling it and all your special snowflake wildcats that are "better" don't have the production capacity to make up the slack, don't have the same widespread renown, and aren't better enough to justify changing all that production.

Regardless of the age of the design, shooting someone with .30-06 will reliably kill them. Along with most big game animals. Anything else offers marginal performance improvement, at best.

You might as well be asking why the military hasn't replaced the M4/M16 family of rifles, even though we've been using them for 50 odd years. Or why most power plants are still coal fired and steam driven, even though we've been doing that for more than a century and nuclear is obviously so much better.
>>
>>29891651
Because a 180gr 30-caliber bullet @2800 fps will still kill the fuck out of nearly everything in North America, and the world, really.

You know how many human have been killed with arrows? WHY DON'T WE SHOOT ARROWS OUT OF GUNS?

I second this /thread-ing.

Arrows are still routinely used, they are also immortal, but an under barrel mounted arrow launcher would be cool.

Why is 30-30 still ridiculously popular?
Because it does job and it does that job well.
>>
>>29891830
Also it's the most powerful cartridge to be used in a wide range of semi-auto rifles.

why is .45 ACP still popular, its been around for over a hundred years, yet it still sells better than 10mm Auto

Those guys are mostly dying of old age.
>>
>>29891651
Because it's the back to back world war champ faggot.
>>
>>29891672
That doesn't work because 5.56 is still widely used by military and police, .30-06 has been out of service since the .308 was introduced over 50 years ago.
>>
>>29891651
because three thousand and six is a good size bullet that can be fired a decent distance with good accuracy and still be lethal

I like .270 for deer. Not really a whore for it, just what my first deer gun is chambered in and never had any issues killing things. Bonus for being the only centerfire caliber in stock during ammo crisis.
>>
>>29894166

Nobody who isn't an autist complains about 30-06.

Its just a really good medium game round that is chambered in a shitload of rifles.

>secretly, i like 7.62x54 more though.
>>
>>29891651
30-06 is better for big game hunting because u can get more power out of it. I can tell u that. And its more sexy cartridge. I bought myself this calibre just this month. The .308 will get a chance if i get a semi auto or sth. If you want a more sniperish calibre you should rather go for .338 lapua or .300 win mag, and that is what the military does anyway.
