Sup /k/. I'm going to be getting my 8 week old GSD Battle Buddy in a couple weeks. When's the right time to take him innawoods and introduce him to guns?

Why would you subject a puppy to irreversible ear damage when you know that dogs have way better hearing than a human

A lot of police / military start training dogs when they're like 16 weeks old. Sooner you can get them use to crap, better they'll be off.

I say as son as you can, mines about to turn 1 year in June. I took mine to the range, it's outdoors, and just opened the windows in my truck to get used to the noise.

When you hike on a trail and turn around to go home say "come on lets go back" and see if he'll lead the way for fun..I did that with mine as sort of a joke/game and had no intention of it meaning anything until I got kinda lost once, my gps wasn't pinging, and I just said "hey buddy, lets head back" and he just turned around and started walking and I followed him. That's when after about a mile or so I started noticing things and found the trail. This was the actual pic I took cause I thought it was kinda cool.

Don't make my mistake op. I operate innawoods all the time with puppers. One time I saw a snek while operating, so I mag dumped 12 shots of 9 milluhmeetah from my glockteen. It was puppers first time hearing a gun. She wouldn't come near me for 20 min. I had to chase her up and down a canyon. She still won't go around guns.

Start with an air rifle, .22, etc etc. Reward your doggo after each shot.

Pic related it's puppers.
>>
>>29892493
I got lost too once. I came to a fork in my return trip and couldn't remember which way. After thinking for a bit I started to go left. Puppers ran right. I called her, she wouldn't come, which is unusual for my pooch. Puppers finally came back with a bone she picked up from an elk carcass. She had carried that same bone for the first 3 miles of the hike, so I knew that she ran back to get it. She knew where she left it in the wilderness. I let puppers navigate from now on.

Fire crackers and the like might help to

The first 2 years should be strictly obedience and tracking. You can begin training immediately. However the younger a pup is sometimes the more difficult it is to get them to focus on the task at hand and training sessions should be short 5-10 min. Research schutzhund / IPO. Ill leave a link below. You can begin scent pad training / feeding sessions immediately. Focus on name recognition, focus and the basic commands first. Disclaimer I am not a fan of SEALs... however there is a book by the name of Trident k9 warriors, it goes into great detail on how they train their dogs. Expose the dog to different surfaces, heights and noises while he is young. This will allow for less distractions or hesitation when he is older.

I've trained 2 GSDs in IPO/schutzhund. Find a club in your area and attend a few meet ups. Make friends with the trainers/owners. Your first visit you will be absolutely blown away by the capabilities of these animals.

My doggo does PSA which is sort of like a super white trash version of Schutzhund. Pic related.

If you want to train an operator dog you need to get them motherfuckers desensitized to shit. I mean if you really want a pipe hitting motherfucker type dog, you're going to spend a LOT of time working with it.

Find out what motivates the dog. High drive dogs are usually motivated by play, and often by food. Low prey drive dogs usually have a higher food drive. Find out what motivates your doggo.

Once you know, you need to desensitize the SHIT out of it. Take it innacity and every time it sees something new and strange, distract the FUCK out of it with food or a toy. Skateboard? Food. Loud ass bus? Food. Wheelchair, black people, kids, backfire, homeless person screaming, thunder, ANYTHING foreign or new - distract that fucker. Take them innacountry and show them cows, tractors, etc. Especially do this around other dogs.

Why? You're training the dog to look to you whenever it encounters something new, and desensitizing it. Fearful dogs are nervy, skittish, and "aggressive".

Do the same goddamn thing for gunshots. Take the dog two dozen feet or so away from a friend. Have the friend bang two 2x4s together. Distract that goddamn dog. Doggo won't care. Upgrade to .22 & etc.

The most important thing about dog training is timing. You want to intercede BEFORE the dog becomes frightened. And yes use earpro (you can go as ghetto as cotton balls in the ears it makes a difference). Go read a goddamn book and watch some youtubes about the four quadrants of dog behavior shaping and understand them.

My doggo was desensitized to gunshots in a training environment, where a fat dude would run at him in a bitesuit while firing off a pistol. Now whenever he hears gunshots he rushes towards them to see what the fuck is up. He is a good doggo and I love him and give him hugs and pats.
>>
I have a friend that is ex army and now carries a rifle for the State Department. He has those Afghan dogs known as Koochee. Brought it back with him last time he was in country.

Dog comes with him to the range. Doesn't give a fuck about gun shots. It just sleeps under the Suburban or wanders off into the woods behind the range berm.

Dogs just run away when you start shooting. That shit blows out human eardrums I can imagine what it does to a dog's sensitive ears.

I know this because my friend would bring his dog to the range and it would just sprint away yelping when he started shooting. It would basically hide until we stopped then come back later all startled.
>>
Am I the only one here who trains his dog with blanks? It gets them used to the noise. Plus you can shoot it at them from a little distance away so they can get hurt and know about muzzle safety and stuff.

OP should train his dog to walk tactically between his legs.

So this faggy little thing fell into my lap...do they have any use other than sounding the alarm?

>my 1st dog ever
>.5 chiuaua/.5 Jack Russel terrier
>16 weeks old

She seems cool so far. Quiet for a little shit...one thing I notice about her is her situational awareness; she studies & listens to what's going on around. Got her house broken within days, & is proficient with baeic commands (sit, lay down, come), but seems to struggle with "stay" & "heal"...but I don't know what the fuck I'm doing. Is she ever going to be useful for anything? She seems small for waterfowl hunting, but what about rabbit hunting? Thoughts /k/?

depends, is it a neurotic coward like a chihuahua or is it ballsy like a jack?
Either way you really need to stay on top of it's training or it will turn into an uncontrollable piece of shit as it gets older.

jacks and chis have decent noses, but nothing outstanding by dog standards. they do however have keen hearing and sharp eyesight, they hunt more by sight and sound then by smell.
If it's anything like the jack I had it's going to actively try to murder the shit out of anything roughly in it's weight class. Not bark or growl at, just murder. Foxes, raccoons, woodchucks, cats, rats, mice, skunks, rabbits, you name it. He did great with other dogs and kids, but everything else was fair game.

When training the fear of guns out of dogs we tie them to a tree and start blasting bird shot down range. This is what we have been doing for 60 some odd years at this facility. It's also the reason the hunting dogs we train are trained well enough to charge the owners 2,800 dollars for 2 weeks.

>>29902207

She seems to fear nothing but the vacuum cleaner. The only time she barks is a single bark when someone comes up the driveway, or when she has to go out. Other than that, I have get to see her triggered by anything.

So far, she's pretty chill.

Punishment and Reward

If you want an actual hunting dog you can't play house with it.

I'm not talking about going to town on it with a stick, but don't shy away from zapping it every time it does something wrong and giving it a treat every time it does something right. Don't be afraid to yell at it and don't be afraid to praise it. If someone thinks you're a bipolor fuck with the dog then you're doing it right.

Training a hunting dog isn't like training a horse. You don't have the options of Breaking it or Gentling it. You only have the option of making it work.
>>
>>29902657
I'm the other annon, they do go mostly by sight, but any dog can be taught to track, just don't expect them to smell stuff the next county over like a bloodhoud. Teaching a terrier to hunt is easy, they are born knowing how to do that, and your dog seems to exhibit all the traits of a good working terrier. The trick is getting them to follow commands. It needs to know how to heel and you need to be able to call it off or give it commands mid chase if you want to take it hunting. If it doesn't obey your every command and you come across a skunk while hunting, you are going to have a bad time. And if you come across a porcupine or badger, you might not have a dog anymore.

A hunting dog is not your pet or your friend. It's a tool that should both know it's place and know it's worth.
