Just picked this up: Spyderco Hungarian.

It's really good-looking, like a modernized traditional folding knife, and the fit and finish is perfect. Polished G10 scales. CTS-HXP steel. Razor sharp out of the box. Opens effortlessly.

Downsides: It's nearly 5" closed, so it's at the very upper-limit of what's easily pocket-able; the clip is for righties only and there's a recess in the scale, so you can't remove it without the knife looking like a piece fell off; finally, the liner lock is obstructed and very stiff, so closing it one-handed is basically impossible.

FFG_Mora-3617.jpg

The FFG reground carbon Mora I ordered finally arrived.

0.080" at the spine, 0.010" behind the edge, 10 degree per side edge bevel.

The price to performance ratio is totally insane on this thing. Custom fixed blade like geometry and fine grained carbon steel with phenomenally ergonomic handles for less than $30 USD is pretty ridiculous honestly.
>>
>>29866973
That almost makes me want to grind my Mora down but the amount of time that would take makes me baulk. I wish they offered an ffg knife in their 2mm stock.
>>
>>29866992

Why not just buy a reground one like I did? They're less than $30 plus shipping.

Carrying my HAP40 Endura today.

Still experimenting with stropping with 10-30 micron abrasives on leather.

Works incredibly well for giving an apex that retains extreme push cutting sharpness while also having very high slicing aggression.

Also really easy to keep touched up.
>>
>>29874277
Reckon they'll bring Hap40 into production or just stick with sprint runs? Seems to be pretty popular.
>>
>>29874295

Probably just sprint run it for now so they can keep cycling through different Japanese steels.

They've used ZDP as a production steel and have now sprinted Aogami Super and HAP40. I'm really hoping they do a run of Shirogami #1 at some point, ideally at 60+ Rockwell, but who knows if they'd find enough interest in that in their usually carbide obsessed customer base...
>>
>>29874355
>Shirogami #1

Is that the steel they call "white steel"?
>>
>>29874384

Yeah, it's an extremely pure carbon steel capable of being hardened to 62-64 HRC and spectacular at taking an extremely fine edge and holding its initial sharpness well.

It's the diametric opposite of the kinds of steels normally popular amongst folding knife buyers, honestly, but that's precisely what makes it interesting.

Two neckers in 1095 at ~62 HRC and one in 440C at ~61 HRC with a grain size minimization heat treat (basically it doesn't act anything like what people think 440C is like).

depends which flavour of the month you define as "best". Honestly, the "super steels" are equal part technological marvel, and marketing gimmick. You really don't need a valyrian steel knife - A2, D2, O1, 1095, 3V, s30v, s35vn, cts-hxp, cts-bd1, AEB-L, elmax, VG-10 (and others i haven't mentioned) - just pick your poison and roll with it.

The knives I use are D2, O1, S30V, and 1095, and there is no perceptible difference in performance - as long as the knife is high quality, with a good heat treat, and you sharpen it properly.

Blade geometry has more of an impact than steel, and even then not as much as some people think - one of my edc knives has a 4.5mm spine and for the most part, it performs just as well as my 2.5mm knife (already posted ITT).
>>
>>29879397
>and most silverware is nowhere near as sharp as a typical edc knife

blade 3 inches or less, and non-locking, aka slipjoint. Anything that fits these criteria, you can carry "just because". For larger knives, fixed blades, and locking folders, you need a valid reason, that will justify having this specific type of knife.

/k/nife help me

I want a fairly large sized fixed knife for my SHTF preparations. I need the absolute most reliable, durable, and multi-functional one I can get. I'm kinda picky about aesthetics as well.
I can't spend any more than $200 on it. Is there anything even worth buying in that price range? I need something that can chop wood, slice bread, and is still agile and large enough to clear brush. Post pics and/or links of your recommendations.
>>
Are SOG knives decent? I've heard of them but have no clue if they're just mall-ninja grade or actually reliable.

I saw a SOG Seal Pup all black, dull size, no serrations at a local outdoor supply store for $50, same model online I can only find for upwards of $65. I really like the knife as far as size, looks, etc, and even the price isn't too bad, but I'm wondering if I'm gonna end up getting what I paid for it, $50 of shitty stainless steel.

To buy or not to buy?

I have the rosewood handle version but after 12 years mine is good as new and you won't break these big stainless steel SOBs!!

Rosewood version is hard to fine right now but the wood holds up just as good with a perhaps more pretty but slippery grip. Rosewood version was about $70 around town.

Why isn't there a standardized steel/alloy naming system?

There are only so many additives and ratios possible.
Surely there should be a system for knowing the properties and compositions of steels and alloys other than a spreadsheet, right?
>>
>>29885263

Because it would impede the literal mountain of marketing hype bullshit surrounding the latest "super steel" formulation.

Just look at the number of people who fervently believe x or y is the best steel, but if you put a fucking gun to their head wouldn't be able to correctly identify the actual material properties of that steel, nor what applications it's actually suitable for.

A folding kukuri is a bad idea. Blade shape is very impractical for a knife that size and the folding/locking mechanism isn't going to last long if your hacking away at stuff like you would with a regular kukuri. Also M E M E K N I F E.

PM2 is a great knife, I have 4. Buy one and do the zip tie mod and you will have a knife that won't deploy accidentally but is also faster to deploy than an automatic knife or assisted folder.
>>
>>29890913
Mock my spelling all you want, I'm tired and that's how it sounded in my head.

>>29890929
OK I will fully explain my feeling about the kukri as a whole and this as a folder in particular

The kukri is by no means a bad knife. It was designed as a chopping and tool and its pretty damn good at it, no one is going to argue that. As a cutting its...fine I guess. Do to its size and shape, it makes for an awkward and cumbersome blade, but hey, if its a blade and sharp it will cut. Anyway, I feel it is a decent bridge between a machete, a hatchet, a cleaver, and a general cutting blade. But if you get right down to it, If I am in a situation where I need to cut down a tree, I would prefer the hatchet. If I need to cut through some brush, I want the machete. If I want to cleave through bone, well....you get idea here. But say I'm hunting in the swamp or whatever and I don't want to carry all of these tools at once because it gets heavy, the kukri is perfect.

Now that being said, let's look closer at this folder. Now I don't really have a reference for size but if its under 3 inches, its basically a novelty and loses all function a regular kukri. If its bigger than that it become sort of uncomfortable to be used as an EDC and may not be legal to carry depending on where you live.
>Is the triad lock not recognized as one of the strongest locks out there?
No doubt a strong and reliable locking mechanism, but no matter what kind of lock, a folding blade will always break before a full tang fixed blade. Especially if you are putting it through the heavy use and abuse a kukri is going to be used for. All of the force from that swing is going right on that fulcrum. If I am in a situation where I feel I need a kukri I don't want to risk it breaking and leaving me with a shitty awkward blade.
I also can't really imagine needing to carry a folding kukri as opposed to a fixed blade one short of " my post office in Madagascar doesn't allow for fixed blades at work."

Don't get me wrong, it's a neat looking knoife, but it's a bad idea. Kukri's are meant to be used for hacking and slashing, and folding knives aren't meant to withstand as much of that kind of abuse as fixed blades, so I really don't see the folding mechanism lasting long on it. Also, the blade is bigger than the handle, so...

It depends. Damascus is usually several different types of steel folded over into each other and fused together. There are several different methods of making it, each one resulting in different strengths, but it also requires good materials. Bad materials and a good method of crafting it will result in a bad blade, same if you had good materials and a bad method. It's steel all the same, so I guess it depends on how well you welded it all together and the carbon content of it.
It's more of a meme nowadays that we have finer ways of crafting steel, but back in ye olden tymes, it was pretty much the best. It's goddamn sexy to look at and some blades made of damascus can compete with or exceed even modern steels, but that all depends on who's making it out of what.

This is b8.

Steel honing rods work by re-aligning the apex and to some extent by burnishing, not by abrasion. This is a reasonably well understood phenomenon.

Japanese waterstones wear because they are friable by design to constantly expose fresh unworn abrasive in use.

It has nothing to do with with how hard the abrasive is or is not. For example, Shapton Glass stones are made of aluminum oxide and are extremely wear and gouge resistant, while Sigma Power Select II stones are made of much harder silicon carbide and yet are extremely friable (by design).

The ability to constantly expose fresh, unworn abrasive in use is precisely why waterstones are MUCH faster than diamond plates. Use a microscope to compare the edge finish left by a diamond plate vs a waterstone at any give grit and you will see immediately that the waterstone leaves a MUCH finer finish at any given grit.

I own Atoma 140, 400 and 1200 diamond plates and once I started using waterstones the diamond plates have been relegated to being used to keep the waterstones flat.

Great knife. Only complaint is that the thumb pin always got loose and unscrewed itself(which is what happened in pic related)

Oh it's a brand? I see. Well I had neer heard of them. Generally damascus is more expensive than, say, stainless, but it's not as expensive as the really high-grade carbon steels. I'd say don't go for cheap damascus, but honestly you'd have to get in contact with someone or multiple people that have used their products to find out what kind of quality they are.

Bumping post now that thread has aged. Have already gotten one suggestion (>>29883282) but I'm looking for other options.

Anyone else have any recommendations for an all-purpose fixed? If not, does anyone have any experience with the Cold Steel Frontier Bowie?
