No watch thread? Tacticool or simple, both are fine
Looking for suggestions for a watch for my girlfriend who is leaving for Coast Guard boot camp in July.
My requirements are as follows:
Must be waterproof to 100m (Yes this is excessive, but I've found 50m fails even with swimming casually for extended periods)
Must have a band that either is metal and won't rust, or is nylon and will dry naturally
Must be analog (Digital watches are ugly, and seem cheap)
Must be $100-$200
Must not be G-Shock
Must be from a well known watch company (ex. Seiko)
Pic related is an example, although i cannot find one online for sale new
>>
Would like to clarify, this watch is intended to last several years, not just for boot

What about Quartz vs. Auto?

I really like my Seiko SKX173, which is a legit dive watch, won't look giant on a girl, and is very rugged and reliable. It's an automatic and not a quartz, though, which means it's not the most accurate thing in the world and it will run out of power and have to be reset if it's not worn for a day or two.
>>
>>29851149
>Must not be G-Shock

Why for no G-Shock? I dropped $60 on one about a year and half ago and it's the only watch that's ever survived that long for me.

seiko alpinist. reference I believe is SARB007 but I could be wrong there.

it's a little out of OP's price range at 400ish. I like it because it has some identity and style for a tool watch ( though it is so common among watch threads that it's individuality might seem lost, but in person you rarely see them)

plus the compass bezel is pretty neet, fairly redundant, but it isn't without use and it's an uncommon comication

> Warsaw Pact watch
> Bond strap

How perverse.

Anyway, slap that shit on an engineer and go to town. Sure, it weighs a ton. But if you ever get culturally enriched you can take it off, twirl it over your head and release it at your attacker, observing with glee as your wristwatch tears a foot wide exit wound in Tyrone's back.

During Air Force Basic Military Training, nearly every trainee purchases this model watch from the BX. To Air Force dudes, the Casio F-91W is "THE BMT WATCH". OP checking in,
Would it be worth it to replace a rubberized strap with a NATO strap or is it fine as is?
pic related and first reply are what I'm currently looking at

Replace the rubber band with a durable nato or even better (imo) an isofrane strap
Isofrane's are a bit expensive though, but very comfy and suit divers very nicely

some things to note.
1. digital is easier to read than with the hands, and it will be more accurate to spot at quick glance, and read in 24 hour time.

2. if it doesnt have a button for light, its worthless

3. If it doesnt have an alarm, its worthless

4. If it doesnt have a stop watch, its worthless

5. Leather bands suck, if you get wet it stays wet and itchy, if you sweat, it gets sweaty. They also degrade and once they rip a little, they're fucked.

6. Nylon bands are better, they won't stink, dry quicker, and little more durable in military use.

7. Big ass watches are just asking to get broken, especially if they have glass or fragile plastic faces. One good wack on the concrete or a piece of metal donezo

8. Anything over 50$ is stupid.

Watches will get lost, beaten, stolen, you name. Its a tool. Dont provide her something she can't use, save it for after she's done. Otherwise I've lived my military career off two 15 dollar walmart watches. One i lost, the other i still have, but the band finally gave out.

Some of us actually have jobs that depend heavily on appearance and interactions with other people. Having a nice fitted suit and showing a $20 Casio on your wrist will do a lot for throwing out embarrassment and/or making your host think you care little for them.

Different fields, different requirements.

Love the Seiko 5 and I have the smaller one that this guy has >>29854096

Though one complaint I have about Seikos (and Japanese watches in general) is they never quite get the watch faces right which makes aesthetics on them a hit or miss. Reason why I went for the smaller Seiko 5 over the big brother was the design.

Would be great if they invested a bit more on the design and typography. Nonetheless, Seikos make great zero fuss utilitarian automatics and you can't beat them on value for functiionality and build quality.

I actually kind of agree with you given the context, though I personally find analog watches easier to read than digital ones. The light also isn't a big deal IMO, good lume will easily last all night (I was out in the mountains all night last night and my SKX173 was clearly readable all night) and there are also tritium options.

My personal choice for digital is a Suunto Core, although showing up at basic with one might be kind of tryhard. I bought mine as an ex display model for $60 at an REI sale, and have put it through absolute hell while working as an auto mechanic, as well as used it for hiking, skiing, and shooting on many occasions. The only issues it's ever had were a slightly broken strap (the loop that holds the "tail" of the strap broke) and lots of scratches on the bezel.
>>
>>29876160
See >>29876692 for my experience with the Suunto Core. There's a reason they're so ubiquitous among military types.

100m is fine for swimming and shower time ass grabs, you should get a legit rated diver watch if you do real diving though. Plus they're sturdy as fuck.

>>
>>29885409
Let me guess, you pull out your electronic pocket watch every time you want to know what time it is.
>>
>>29885616
If you mean phone then yes? I mean the only time I could think of needing a watch is if you're innawoods and need to keep track of time for some reason.
>>
>>29885720
Some people work with classified where having electronic devices is a huge no no. Hence having a watch becomes viable again.
>>
>>29878836

I know im just giving you your (You) but if you don't know what time it is you are always going to be late to the party (read: assault on Fallujah)

Analog>digital>>>>>>>>>>>sun dial
>>
>>29885746
True, but how many people in this thread do you think are handling classified material. In that case even though why would you buy a really expensive watch? You just need to know the time, not have it work at 50 meters below the water. You could get away with a $20 digital watch or something.
>>29885780
I'm talking about civilian or even outdoors purposes, if you're in the military sure, but wouldn't you be issued a watch if it's relevant to your job?
>>
>>29851149
Bruh, you can get a simple G-Shock with 200m resistance for fifty bucks at Target.
>>
>>29885822
Why wouldn't you wear a watch? It's cheap, fits on your wrist with no hassle, and saves you from digging in your pocket when your hands are dirty.
>>
>>29885862
I mean yeah i'd buy some cheap but quality enough watch just to have it on for those occasions. Like this anon >>29885853
suggested. I'd never buy a watch for more then $50 though nor would I ever buy an analog one. Moving parts=more things to fail, a digital watch has no moving parts.
>>
>>29885896
Oh hell yeah, I mean a fancy watch, I might pay ~$50 for and it'll be for dress occasions only, but I'll stick with my $20 Timex watches for every day work. They work and if it gets fucked up I'm not out any money.
>>

>Issued a watch

Confirmed for never having to do any even mildly /k/ related job. They all require a watch, and its all BYOTP (bring your own time piece)
>>
>>29879517
Quality sure, but it's more a GPS/Technical tool that also tells time. I need a watch that lasts longer than 14 days.
>>
>>29885822
>why buy expensive rifles?
>everyone should just buy cheap guns
>everyone is exactly like me
>stop liking what i dont like

this is what you sound like. you're in a thread about a specific thing. if you do not want or like specific thing, leave. why do you feel the need to argue about why someone needs something?
