We won the war because Washington was smart enough to realize the US was too large a territory to hold. So he tactically retreated a lot, regrouped and ran them thin.

french assistance both in cutting off british reinforcement and in providing boots on the ground was critical for american success.

lets be clear here, without french assistance, the cost of which bankrupted the french state and triggered the french revolution, the revolutionaries would have lost,, the french intervention significantly impaired the british ability to commit troops to the american front, both directly by naval actions cutting off reinforcements and indirectly by threatening both the home islands with invasion and multiple other colonies most of which at that time were more valuable than the US, albeit with less growth potential, the carribean and west indies components of the empire produced 4x as much income for the crown than the 13 colonies for instance,
distance, and french intervention were the decisive factors, not the fighting qualities of the american troops, after all the british were able to raise units from the loyalists pretty readily
