M4 for pocketknives, 3V for fixed blades. Though honestly, there's an abundance of great steel out there today, and just about all of it will perform well if the geometry and HT is right.

any 1000 series high carbon steel is a good choice provided a proper heat treat. No idea what pic related is made of, but it's a hair splitting piece of cutlery

Just keep in mind that not all 10xx steels are high carbon. 1070 might be. 1080 and 1095 are. Lower numbers ain't.

I agree, it's the next 154CM. Only complaint is that it's hard to sharpen, but that comes with edge retention I guess.

I have an S30V spyderco Sage 1, and it holds an edge VERY well, much better than other steels I have, BUT... Is it hard to sharpen.. I'm not even talking about time, it's just weird, I can get a pretty good edge on it but can't get it to be really fine, just a coarse aggresive edge. If I try to polish it it becomes duller, and with other knives I have I can polish it to almost mirror edge and it gets crazy sharp ( they're mostly 8cr13mov, AUS8, and a couple carbon steel / probably 1070)
