The maverick 88 is a solid shotgun. Should work just fine for home defense.

A very important factor in deciding what gun is right for you for home defense is maneuverability. I love shotguns, but you've gotta put some thought into what the most practical weapon for your house is. If you have a lot of narrow hallway bullshit, a pistol may be a good option.

Now, if you cannot compromise on using a shotgun, there are a few legal loopholes you can jump through. Take the Serbu Super Shorty for example. It's a 12-gauge shotgun designed without a stock, technically classifying the gun as an Any Other Weapon under U.S. law, thus making it legally ownable. This is one of the shortest shotguns you would be able to legally own, possibly making it a good candidate for home defense.

I will admit, I know absolutely nothing about the quality of the Super Shorty and will leave it to someone more knowledgeable about that to comment, but the important part is that you first find out what you want out of your gun of choice for home defense. Consider maneuverability, local law and penetration, for starters.

Also for shotguns, think about what type of shot you would want to use, keeping in mind lethality and penetration.
