Been a while since I've seen one.

What scope should I get? Long range shooting (1k+ yd), budget is ~$1200 plus or minus some. Going on a 308 and eventually a 6.5CM. Thinking of Burris XTR II 5-25 scr mil. Also have been looking at bushnell 4.5-30 and PST 6-24.

I'm not entirely convinced that I need a Christmas tree reticle.
>>
burris xtr 2 is a good option, or the SWFA 5-25.

the swfa 5-25 is fantastic, and has a lifetime warranty ( as does the burris)

another option would be IOR

>>29774039
I would say you would be better off with the PST

My PST 2.5-10 is great. Buddy has an an older XTR. Can't into actual "long range" for the time being, don't have the time to make it to the limited number of 600+ ranges in my area.

I won't lie though, I am a #vortexfanboi and desu I think Burris is junk after using their XTR 1-5
>>
>>29774474
the xtr 2 is a massive improvement over the xtr 1 . they should have renamed the xtr 2 to break the association.
>>
>>29774474
the swfa 5-25 competes against the razor 2 hd.

at the 1200 price point (1400 with illuminated ) the swfa 5-25 is the better buy, unless you just have to hve the reticule of that the pst offers.

both have a 100% warranty backed buy good companies.
>>
>>29774474
The guy at MileHighShootingSupply voiced that same mentality; he's had to return all 4 Burris products he has had, but I've also heard that about PST's as well. They were suggesting the XRS if I could spend the $ over either of the two, and said it was a much better scope even for the $. My only concern with that was how it was a 'fast' scope compared to the others. I was amazed at how fucking clear it was even at 30x though.

Thanks for the comments, it helps.
>>
>>29774652
also note, you will not see a SWFA scope in a store, they are only direct from SWFA.

it sucks that you cant finger fuck one, but that is part of what holds the cost down.
>>
>>29774672
I'm assuming you guys are referring to the 5-20, not 5-25, correct? I don't see a 5-25 swfa
>>
>>29774727

What kind of shooting do you plan to do? If you don't need something to pound fence post with then checkout the Nightforce benchrest series.
Superior glass, awesome warranty, benchmark optics for serious competitive shooters.

For rifles I'd reccomend any one of savages 6.5creed models or the ruger precision rifle. Both options are fantastic out of the box.
>>
I'm a fan of the ST-10 TPAL, but there are cheaper options, I just like the EREK
and the fact you can choose the turrets and reticle you want for the most part.

Another good option is the NF SHV 4-14 or 5-20x56.
>>
>>29774756
No prob, it's been a long week for me.

>>29774820
I'll get a RPR 6.5 when the bastards are in stock. Till then I'm going to use my 308 and get better with the box of 500 175gr TMKs for reloading. I'll be fairly gentle with this scope. I'll look at NF, but I've never considered them because they seem to have a different niche than my style of shooting.

I don't think people make 34mm rings for Tikka's... Hmmm
>>
>>29774937
get a 1913 base for the tika (20moa if you want to go to 1000yrd) then use what ever rings you wnat

I've seen a few in my area (CT), don't know about the rest of the country.
You have a tikka .308 already? Nice choice mang. My .308 is setup with a Palma configuration so 155gr VLDs/varget/lapua brass are my pill of choice.
you won't have to worry about 34mm rings unless you drop $2000+ for the BEAST or actar, the other models are all 30mm.
Highly suggested, I've never met one I didn't like. They make a scope for every use from 1-4 combat optics to 15-55 competition scopes.
>I wouldn't trade my NXS 5.5-22x50 for anything, except another NF
>>
>>29774873
pro tip the NF glass and SWFA glass come from the same optical company in Japan
>>
>>29775020
Having glass made by the same company is like having wheel blanks made by the same company.
The NF has proprietary coatings, different reticle etching process, multi part objective lense format, and hand alignment/fitment of all lenses.

What kind of accuracy do you see out of the savages at, say, 1000yd?
>>
>>29775165
Get your pistol permit in yet fellow connecticuck?
Get on it quick before heir dannal closes every FFL in this shitty state.

Personally I'm lucky to hold moa the few times I've driven to Albany & shot 1k lol most of my shooting is <300yd, I've gotten pretty damn good with both my savages (M12 .223 & .308 custom M10) at the distances I regularlly shoot.
Let me comb through the phone & find you a group pic.

Is the SWFA 1-4 any good?
>>
>>29775156
not saying that coatings and internals dont make a huge difference. just pointing out they both use Jap Glass.

the PST from vortex us filipino glass
>>
>>29775222
Nope, I'm 19.
>Iowa legalizes silencers
>Mississippi considering permitless carry
Once I move out of state I'm going to buy myself a really nice boltfun and go after coyotes at 1200 yards.
It's hard choosing a cartridge though.
Creedmoor, 26 nosler, lapua, 260 REM, 6.5x55 Swede, etc etc
Nothing turns me on more than engraved double trigger over/under rifles though.
>>29775290
Nice shooting. I'd consider that target "thoroughly wounded" :^)
>>
>>29775422
If you are going to reload, a 6.5 SLR will give you just about the most velocity you can get out of a 6.5 without torching your barrel. the 26 nosler and 6.5-284 put up good numbers, but your accurate barrel life will be depressingly short.
>>
I have the swfa 10x HD and love it until 800 yards or so and then wished for more magnification with my shit eyesight
>>
>>29775330
>>29775330
yes , better than the vortex sfp 1-4
>>
>>29775610
yeah , that little extra is why i went with the 3-15
>>
>>29775422
I got mine in a few weeks ago! Funny because I've been a pistol instructor since I was 16 thanks to coaching.
>constitonal carry never
Sadly I can't leave, I do insurance and that's the one industry that's still here.

Personally I'd go with 7mm BR, some of the new 7mm/.284 projectiles have outstanding BCs, better than comparative 6.5. Without having an accurate barrel life measured in hundres rounds (you'll get around 5-8k out of a mild BR).
Sadly this is a custom chambering, but one that's well worth it.

I would argue that the gen 2 has a much longer feature list and higger build quality...
>>
>>29774039
Anyone have any recommendations for 'long range' shooting with a .22 piston airgun.
My current centerpoint 3-9 has held up well right out to 60yds but anything past that I hit max elevation, hold over is unreliable with the duplex reticle.
>>
>>29774039
This is a retarded question but how do you even find or see prey from beyond 1000?
>>
>>29778660

Not hard if terrain is decent. Optics really help with that.

10x is just about perfect for seeing a man sized target.

>tfw recent purchase of K31 wiped out my fun savings jar
>tfw the scope mount alone will take the same amount of time saving as the gun
>>29778771
I have incredibly shitty cross dominiant eyes that aren't good even with glasses... Should I just give up shooting beyond 150 with irons? The closes 500 yard range is like a 3 hour drive from me...
>>
>>29778846
Ask your boss if you can pick up some more hours. Doesnt take long to save up if you want something bad enough.
>>
>>29778846
Just shoot right handed eight eyed. Take the time and train yourself to do it. Will make everything easier and more affordable for you, really you shouldn't even be trying to shoot precision if you haven't already corrected your cross dominance.

Put a piece of tape over the left lens of a pair of shooting glasses to help.
>>
>>29778859
I'm a full time student with a part time job that is trying to graduate with no debt extrs money and time is something I dkn't have a lot of. Should only take like two months of saving anyway, faster if my plan to finally cut the smokes and booze from my life works out.

>>29778882
I've gotten to the point where I can shoot with both eyes open but am working maintaining focus with my non dominant eye, because if I look into the distance of longer than 100ish I automatically switches to my dominat eye. I actually got the tape trick from /k/ and it helped a lot.
>>
>>29774039
I reccomend a reflex sight od ACOG
>>
>>29778971
Good choice.
>>
>>29778934
Yeah you don't want to do that.
Right eye open only, this isnt 1x fast accusation shooting. It's precision shooting, take your time. having both eyes open on 25x or while looking through some apature sights will just give you a headache and cloud your brain with useless info.!

The reason I say use your right eye even if it's not your dominant eye is becaus it's a fuck ton easier to train your eye to adjust to a finer focus than teach your non dominant arm fine motor skills. Plus 90% of the tools in the firearm world are designed behind a right handed/right eyed shooter.
>once you get your cross dominance corrected you can work on full ambidextrous shooting, which is just fun
>>
>>29779006
eye patch and keep both eyes open? maybe?
>>
>>29779011
That'll accomplish the same goal without any of the winking or face muscle strain, black tape or an opaque cover also help. More of a reminder for your brain to focus on the other eye than anything.
Just give it a shot, your brain will compensate pretty quickly once it only has one source of information.
>>
>>29779048
Pardon I was another anon and just tacking something onto what you suggested.
>>
>>29779006
Sorry I didn't clarify, I'm right handed but left eye dominant. Also thinking of simply skipping the diopter setup and going with a clamp on scope mount. So if shooting with a scope after spotting my target, just close one eye?
>>
>>29779149
Perfect, the hard part is already done. Just close your left eye or cover it as another anon suggested & start using your dominant eye. It'll feel very weird at first but you'll get used to it.
This should really help your focus, both mentally is visually. I always tell people it's like dropping in a zone.
If you already know the basic fundamentals I highly reccomend starting with a decent scope instead of the diopter iron sights. They're about the same if not more expensive than a decent scope & prone to more problems, I have a set of Williams on my xr100 so I know that from experience lol.
>>
Out of curiosity, does anyone here shoot .338 Lapua? Just window shopping neato guns and came across the Anderson Arms Ulfberht, not that I could afford one any time soon.

>>29779657
I used to own a R700 MLR sps in .338lm.

No
>>
>>29782928
Optically it's probably pretty close, close enough to where one of us most likely couldn't tell any noticeable difference.

Personally I'd say the vortex is a better optic but that's just preference.
>>
>>29782663

Do you not reuse your brass? 4/5 firings should be easy on lapua.
>>
>>29784397

More to scopes than optical quality...
