I am aware CS:GO is just a videogame, but why the hell is the AWP seen as more powerful than the SSG 08?
They both use 7.62×51mm NATO (.308 Winchester) cardriges, or at least are the most common variants of them. Both can be chambered for .338 Lapua Magnum, which is more powerdful.
As for barrel length, according to Wikipedia the AWP has a barrel length of 610mm, while the SSG 08 has available barrel lengthths of 508 mm, 600 mm or 690 mm.
Is there anything I am missing or is there really no good reason the AWP is considered more powerful than the SSG 08?

Smh. Read thread faggot. Both are available in .338 Lapua and 7.62x51. And, we're talking about the Arctic Warfare Police model (AWP) which is available in both, not the Arctic Warfare Magnum (AWM) which is always chambered in .338.

It is a video game. They want to balance the gun attributes in relation to how much in game money they cost
Also, the "AWP" is actually a AWSM. In the old CS games, they outright state it fires .338. Before CSGO, it was also called the "magnum sniper rifle." If you dig through the files of CSGO, they also state it fires .338 (although due to a glitch in the older CS games, the P90 also uses .338 ammunition for some reason, but still does low damage)
The SSG, in the counter strike's universe, fires "7.62mm" ammunition. In the CS universe, this ammo is shared between the AK47, Styer Scout, SSG08, and the AUG A1. This just makes it much weaker by default compared to the AWSM
In the end, realism should not be expected, especially from a game like counter strike. You shouldn't really try to rationalize it
