Northern Irish are also allowed to own guns, unlike their Brit-bros to the east, under the logic that the Republic of Ireland might actually try to take N. Ireland.
That's why you still get IRA sympathizers, they want it all. In reality most Northern Irish are Ulster-scots and other Brits who claimed farms and land when things were getting really bad.

For those of you who stumble on this thread and have no idea what people are whining about, go check out the film "The Wind that Shakes the Barley"
Essentially the Irish wanted emancipation from England because they were treated like shit by them and did not benefit from being under British rule.
The British put out a bulletin for young men who were willing to do some sketchy work in Ireland. Many WWI veterans who could not find work elsewhere joined up, while many losers and those just looking to fuck up a mick did the same.
These were the "black and tans"
Ireland got tired of their shit and started killing them or otherwise harassing them.
In the ultimate act of retardation, the British burned down the town of Cork in retaliation for the assassination of some British spies discovered by rebels.
A true resistance movement began. They assassinated people, ambushed British soldiers, and even defeated them in open combat.
The British grew tired of all this shit so they offered the leaders of the IRA a truce. You get southern Ireland and independence, we get northern Ireland because they're protestant anyway and are sick of most of you guys as much as we are.
The actual IRA soldiers were furious about this decision. They wanted all of Ireland to be free from British rule under a single flag. Their leaders sold them short, and even executed some of them who refused to lay down arms and admit that it was over. They did this to appease the British, who were likely skeptical the Irish would hold to their truce.
And that's basically it. It flared up occasionally and many "IRA" splinter-factions grew.
They mostly just blew up store-fronts and acted like a bunch of fucking Muslims, occasionally taking up arms whenever they could manage to stock-pile enough to do jack-shit.
But the old IRA, the ones who took up arms against the police-state of the black and tans and British subjugation, are heroes whose songs should be sung.

Not to my knowledge. Most Irish I've talked to are perfectly happy to let it be. They have genetic and cultural differences which is why there was never a united front against Britain. Southern Irish are more Celtic genetically and "the troubles" with England started because it was mostly this area of Ireland that stayed loyal to the Pope after the British converted to Anglicanism.
That's why people wear green on St. Patrick's day. The feast of St. Patrick is one of the oldest Catholic traditions in Europe. People wore green to openly show their support to the Pope, and were imprisoned and hanged for it by England.
