In a drone/robot heavy military, will an enlisted/officer social caste system still need to exist?
In a future without an officer class, where else would the world's aristocrats come from?
Would status be distributed among various robots, with less unit oriented control and more automated school like behavior? Would human unit structure and rank structure be applicable to a fully automated military?
What if "individual" robots constantly transferred from one body to another during a conflict?
Would there still be a concept of a leader? Or would leadership cease and instead be replaced by emergent mass behavior reaching a goal more efficiently than a leader-follower setup ever could?

Years ago, I actually wrote a story about that. Combat Vehicles were AI driven and partnered with a human operator.
Like military working dogs, the AI's had rank as did their operators. They were all Warrants outside of the Air Force. As an aside, the AI's began to mimic the thinking of their bionically coupled operators and over time they would grow co-dependent and do things like try to get their operators to quit smoking or give them (hilariously bad) relationship advice.
But basically, the AI's did the heavy lifting of controlling the functions of the vehicle and working out targeting solutions while the operator had decision-making authority.

Of course, how else will we tell the successful from the poor?
In the future, the humble drone will achieve rank as a result of combat experience. When you get to 3,200exp you get to PFC. But it takes something like 30,000 to get to SGT. Getting kills with certain weapons will qualify that drone for various accessories. Once the drone reaches the highest rank possible, it can then Prestige. We will throw beautiful promotion ceremonies for each and every drone, and equally elaborate candelabra for each and every Certificate of Achievement earned with each weapon and type of kill, it will be a glorious time.
Meanwhile, pimple-faced PFC Sanchez from Coppell, TX is the drone's pilot. He looks like shit, because he is a shit. He has 3 ribbons on his rack and one of them is for finishing boot camp. That's all he gets because he's just a fucking boot. I mean hell, his drone has been a 5 Star General 3 fucking times now. Drone pilots. Fucking boot pieces of shit.
