i'm not a /k/ regular, but i've been coming here lately because i'm joining the army next year and this board has the most military talk on it. but seeing this thread reminded me of something that happened to me when i was a teenager.
for a bit of context, i grew up in a small coastal town in australia. there wasn't a whole lot to do in this town, so most weekends people would organise these big parties out in the bush or near the beach, where we could drink and take drugs all we wanted without people getting up our arses. the parties sometimes got pretty big. i remember one that had been properly organised that was at least 700+ people, but normally it was more like 50 - 80 people. for further context, my town had a pretty big aboriginal population. i think they account for about 15% of the town, when they only make up about 4% of australia. anyway...

I Picked a new spot to hunt one time on my hunting clubs land. Shitty wooden stand no one used, i figured because no one used it i might see something because of a lack of human presence.
I spend most of hunting season on this spot, never see anything but right at dark i always hear stuff walking out in front of me but i cant see it. I check for tracks can never find them.

They're kind of a harmless forest spirit that keeps the animal population and plantlife safe. When they come across humans, they're curious and want to observe and in some attempts, try and make contact by trying to imitate one or mimicking human speech, that they don't understand, like a cat owner meowing at their pet cat. Leaving behind dead animals is their way of showing you that they are keeping watch and protecting you from potential danger. One of the few things they know of humans is how fragile they are.
So next time you go innawoods, don't bother bringing a weapon, they'll keep you safe and if you're lucky, will drop off something you can cook yourself. Don't worry about the rotting smell either, you'd smell that bad too if you lived in the woods all your life.
Just remember, the forestwalker is a friend of humanity and you can feel safe and not bring guns and who knows, maybe you'll make a new friend on your next adventure into the woods.

This one time I went to some relatives living in the hills of Subcarpathia. Aunt lives in the wooded hills high up so we had to walk, no roads there. Once there we started drinking, family went home around 10pm, stayed with uncle drank some more.
Then around 1am we go back kinda shitfaced in these deep ass woods. At one point I'm seeing bright as fuck light through the trees at a clearing nearby and I'm like uncle holy shit whats that. And he just took the fuck off. I tried seeing what the hell that was but couldnt so I followed him.
Later next day he laughed at me said it was just people stealing trees at night and he's a forest official so he'd have to try and stop them but I know he's full of shit.
Still gives me goosebumps, there were no saw sounds, no car sounds, no people sounds just light.

Also, if your injury is life threatening and you are not dead, a phone would be a nice thing to have. A gunshot is easy to sleep through, but if it's one right after the other, you're gonna wake up in time to hear several more gunshots. Safety is huge in his house. Checking a gun is always the first thing he does when someone walks in. AR should have bolt locked with remaining rounds in magazine.
