Project Guns Thread

I'm gonna refinish a mosin stock. How do i retain the red shellacy look but also upgrade the finish to withstand weeklong waterlogged hunting trips. I need me a rifle that can do both, sit on a mantle and look pretty, and kill moose.

Other than that post guns you are working on.
>>
planning on doing a 10/22 build, so far I have 2 things picked out;
>BX trigger group (seems the best but I'm open to suggestions)
>M1 Carbine stock since it's cool
still looking for a decent budget glass and maybe a barrel so I need help there.
first gun build so I wanna do it right.
>>
Pick the finish at home depot, make sure it's not cheap, make sure it's weatherproof, like for fences or a garage door. It's super easy, I buy shit guns with shit stocks and refinish them and sell it for a pretty penny. No pics am on mobile. Sand it first tho. All the Nicks and dings in the stock.
>>
>>29733019
I heard sanding is absolutely the last thing you want to do with any stock.

Also, what if I have a gun with cartouches I'd like to preserve? Not OP, just someone who's getting some milsurp soon and wants to look into restoring it a little.
>>

Turning my Mosin into a PU Sniper. Refinished the stock, plan on doing a trigger job and obviously mounting the scope.

Plan on buying an Uzi and SBR-ing it soon, too. That'll be an easy project.

Currently building an M16A1 / C7 Clone with the Fostech Echo trigger.

Just completed a P38k mockup.
>>
>>29732996
I got a Mosin stripped Hex reciever I'm going to make into a precision rifle just because I can.

I'm saving up to have a proper barrel built for it from one of the machine shops around here and I'm mounting one of optics from Kalinka optics or something just so it looks cool.

I don't really know what I'm doing
>>
>>29733030
>sanding is the last thing you want to do with any stock
Which is why there are no guns in the middle east, where the wind sandblasts everything.
>>
>>29732996
The red shellac is from aging 60 years. You'll have to cheat to get it back if you're going to strip that.

I'm in a similar situation with my type 56 sks. Is the red also from aging?
I'm not sure if I should or should not refinish. I don't want the wood to dry and crack or rot. Some of the edges are black.

I was thinking of getting a SKS for a project gun. And good tips

Waiting on my steel trigger guard and forend spacer for my H&R Topper to come in. Already refinished the stock. No pics at the moment, they're all on my computer.

I know, I wanna know how I cheat.

What I did was strip the shellac with acetone (worked really well). I then gave it a very very light sanding to slightly smooth the wood, while retaining the cartouches. I then stained it with a cabernet colored stain by rustoleum. For some reason, the barrel shroud came out a slightly darker color than the rest of the stock, so I gave the lighter areas a second coat, although this didn't change much. After that, I gave it a few coats of formby's high gloss tung oil. This was my first time refinishing a stock, or any wood for that matter, so take this with a grain of salt. I can't really comment on the durability of it, because I have never taken it out in super rough conditions. It did get rained on a bit once, and it didn't seem to soak up any water though.

Nice. How did you do it? I recently got pic related, and I'm thinking about ordering an M44 stock to replace the beat to shit chu wood it has now.
>>
>>29737083
It looks like a technically very well done job. I've just always hated the look of laminated stocks.

My humble opinion = have some fun with said shit stock by sanding it, boiling it and seeing what it looks like underneath. Pic related looked just like mine

>>29737083

But I took about three days and stripped it, refinished it. I love how it looks. The laminate quite literally glows and reflects in the sunlight. Always get comments on it.
>>
>>29737197
Eh, I would honestly like to keep the old stock around and unchanged just because it has a certain character to it. I found a leaf, a seed, and an old patch that had been run through the barrel under the barrel shroud, so I kinda feel like it has a story, although it is one I will never know.

Pretty nice. I never liked the look of bright wood on guns, the laminated wood pattern is pretty awesome though. Knowing me, I would slather a thin coat of Minwax's red mahogony stain onto that wood

Trust me, it was very, very tough not to. I refinished a 91/30 with an excellent barrel in minwax red mahogany and slapped a PU scope on it for fun. Love the dark "Ruskie" color of it.

I'm a sucker for the Eastern bloc's method of wood finishing. My next project doesn't involve refinishing, but taking the furniture Ironwood Designs sells and transforming my VEPR into an almost-SVD clone.

I have more projects than some people have guns!

At the moment I have a Marlin 89C that is totally apart and needs rebuilding.
>>
Has anyone here resnipered an ex-sniper mosin? How did you line up the scope holes with the old ones?

Okay, going to go down the list

* Marlin 89C, had to clean this crap off the stock, its apart and needs a couple parts to make it right. Also need a grip cap filler

* Ithaca X-5T (super snowflake). Needs a new "Raybar" Front sight and some small pieces

Have a crapton that just need some screws or small blued parts. My custom screwmaker is a bit backed up on fabrication and bluing.

This is a Meridan Model 15, the bastard stepchild of the Savage 1914. They have a serious design flaw so not many are around that function.

This particular one still works, but it had been nickel finished. Magazine tube is shit so I am going to get one fabricated in stainless steel then reassemble

Forgot I farmed out my .410 SMLE musket to a buddy who wanted to try cleaning/restoring. No idea how thats going.

Goddamn Germans. Spoonfeed me, what dissolves plastic but not metal really well? Acetone should right?
>>
>>29738717
regular gasoline
>>
>got an Anderson stripped lower private sale a couple weeks ago
>LPK pin set incoming
>parts budget: wife buys clothes and shit, I buy an equal amount in parts
Might take a while, but it'll be nice.
>>
>>29738717
It kinda depends on the plastic. Some are more durable than others, but acetone should do pretty well. What are you trying to dissolve?
>>
>>29739689
There is, was, a plastic buffer plate on the pistol. It was all yellow and stiff from age. I decided to shoot it before looking for replacements. I remember saying "it can't be THAT brittle". Fired one and a half magazines of .32 and the slide locks open. The force shattered that plastic buffer and wedged pieces between the slide and frame lodging it open. I can see the bits with a mirror and a light. I ordered the new buffers so now I just have to dissolve the plastic between the slide to take the pistol apart.
>>
>>29739889
if its brittle just force the slide forward and it will crumble. acetone will take forever to dissolve it. gasoline will probably work better, that is to say not very well. you could soak it for a week and it'll just soften. you would need real acid like HCL to dissolve it completely in a reasonable amount of time and that will ruin your gun and probably you too.

Waiting on a Form 1 to SBR my CX4.
Waiting on a From 1 to chop a terrible condition Mosin into an Obrez.
Waiting on a Form 1 to SBR my Suomi KP m/44. Also waiting on a newly converted bolt to come back.
>>
>>29739976
So just soak it for a long time? I mean I've shoved on the damn thing short of using a hammer and it hasn't budged there's a lot of plastic wedged in there.
>>
>>29740121
if you soak it in gasoline it'll take a few days to get soft enough to fall apart. it will take a lot longer to just dissolve out completely. you might corrode some metal too though. pure acetone will probably not hurt any metal but it will take out any oil/lubricant that might be necessary to keep the gun working well. acetone will also take a long fucking time to soften plastic. there might also be some plastic parts in there like spring caps or something that you don't want to soften.

if i were you i'd take to to a gunsmith and see what he would charge to fix it for you. if your sure there is no other plastic in there a better idea would be to heat the part with the plastic up with a heat gun ($25 online or hardware stone) until it softens enough to come apart.
>>
>>29740121
You said you could see it with a mirror and a light. Just for the sake of curiosity, could you try to get a pic?
>>
>>29738554
noice. What's left on it, besides rewilding the frame?
>>
>>29740255
the lube being removed is easy enough to fix. In my relatively brief experience with firearms, springs typically aren't capped. It looks relatively similar to a PPK, and I don't recall there being any plastic bits in mine, so I think he would probably be fine.
>>
>>29740060
So when you do the form for obrez what do you put on it? Don't they require some kind of justification? Curious because I kind of want one
>>
>>29739889
Kek, I've had something similar happen to me with an older marlin model 60 and it's old nylon buffer. Like another anon said try forcing it since the plastic is brittle.

Any suggestions for improving the front sight on a nugget? I was thinking about filing it to a point and then painting it white so it's easier to see and doesn't cover up so much of the target.

It is a Form 1. Registering it as an SBR. Justification is the same as always, "Legal and Personal Use".
